I think the difference is that a caretaker manager used to be appointed while the club started searching for and then appointing a new manager. An interim manager is someone in place while the finishing touches are put to the deal with the new manager who was identified and sounded out before the old manager was sacked. In other words, the difference between the two is about 2 weeks. |  |

I would have said the other way around for some reason. The caretaker title always seemed to be used on someone who had absolutely no chance of getting the job and was there just to fill the role, where as I think now an interim seems to be the way for someone to almost audition themselves in some way to try and get the job long term.
