Christmas at the Players House ? 11:56 - Dec 24 with 3804 viewsturtle2

What do we think the routine is ? is there any training done on Christmas day or will the players be in today and get tomorrow off before the short trip Friday ? so if they are at home tomorrow what do we think are the orders from staff about diet ? no croquettes , yorkies and no pigs in blankets and hands off the kids choccies or are they given a free ticket on Christmas day - cannot believe they'd be allowed to drink and early nights all round >?
I remember once the Sunday times magazine - a life in the day - was Ryan Giggs - apprently he had one blow off a week which was typically Sat night if no game sunday which was 2 pints and sausage and chips from the local on the way home - that really was it ! (well the other stuff he probably wasn't caught out on)

I would imagine that it's all very carefully controlled or, if not, all very much at the players' own risk - overdo it at Christmas and underperform on Boxing Day at your own risk.

On the other side, with the amount of preparation that goes into things, it wouldn't surprise me if they've been provided with tailored nutrition plans for this week, which allow a little indulgence within carefully controlled parameters.

It might be annoying, but hopefully they see it as a small sacrifice to make in return for being paid a king's ransom on a weekly basis. The big blow-out can wait until the summer break, no doubt.

You ain't a beauty but, hey, you're alright.

At a complete guess, for a normal 3pm Boxing Day game, it wouldn't surprise me if they were allowed a normal Christmas dinner. As in one plate instead of the starter, main, dessert, mince pies, Irish coffees and after eights etc. Then back to normal diet for the 24 hours before kick off.

Again, purely guessing.

Depends if home or away but players generally train on Christmas Day if they have a Boxing Day game, a usual session like they would on a Friday or Saturday before a Sat/Sunday game.

Our lot may be lucky this year to be given Christmas day off seeing they are playing on 27th.

Diet will be fairly standard for a professional athlete, so I expect to have majority of lower fat Christmas foods, and I reckon little or no alcohol.

Point of order with your post - yorkshire puddings and croquettes (assume potato) have no place on a Turkey Christmas Dinner, yorkshires *may* be permitted if you are having a red meat instead of Turkey. At no points are croquettes acceptable, only potato should be roasties.

They'll have more than half their lives to overeat at Christmas once their careers are over, so I'm sure they'll keep their eyes on the prize and take it easy

Completely agree - they go with everything. When I make yorkshires, I always make twice what we need for lunch as they make an excellent supper with raspberry jam.

But, the traditional Christmas dinner does not have yorkshire puddings, as they should only really accompany beef, and as such be cooked in the dripping.

It's worth noting that pigs in blankets only really became a thing in the 1950s, so technically they are not traditional either.

Sorry - I don't make the rules

There's an article on the beeb today about this. Saka is interviewed (pre-injury) and says no training as game on 27th so can have a proper christmas day.

Said on food 'turkey, pigs in blankets, potatoes, jollof rice, gravy, but no veggies'. Which I thought was weird and unsure if thats a dietary thing or him being a manchild that wont eat his greens? Veggies surely least offensive thing on plate nutritionally? Double carbing pre-game I get though.

More generally on meal, for me there are no rules, eat what makes you happy. I am down with a yorkie at Christmas. Our family always has some warmed chicken crisps with our roast which I know is super weird. And whilst I can't abide them I am aware potato croquettes are traditional in Ireland (my kids mother is irish). They would have roast, mash and croquettes with their Christmas meal (some stereotypes exist for a reason...)

Not so important this year as our game is on evening of 27th.

Muric’s going to drop the turkey. Def info!

Er, more seriously I’m sure he won’t and I reckon they’ll be spending some mostly sober quality time with their families and/or friends. Presumably they only get the one day off (and maybe today too?), so it’ll fly by. I can’t imagine they can get on the beers these days. Given all the training they do though, they probably get a free pass to eat what they want for the day. Maybe?

Traditional Christmas dinner has yorkshires in my world. They go with anything roasted. Aunt Bessie (who gets ever younger) supplies those. I’d prefer home made but since Mrs C does the cooking I keep the gob firmly shut on that score!

Best ever - my grandmother used to make one big YP in a tray and that’d be served first with rich onion gravy. The dark beef style version for that, lamb or Bambi, lighter for chicken or turkey. That Yorkshire Pudding was food of the gods.

How we wedged in the main course I’ll never know, but we did.

They can, but they take up valuable space on a Christmas dinner plate.

And croquettes? Never, ever, ever heard of them as part of Christmas dinner. What an abomination! Only potatoes on the plate are crunchy roasties.

I always do one large one and then carve it up. I’m banned from doing any tomorrow because ‘they don’t go with Christmas dinner and will be a faff’, but balls to that. I’m with you - they go with anything and especially any sort of roast. We’ll def be having them and I might make some small ones, as they are a faff when you do your own, just because of having to whack the oven up and keep the door shut. Hard to juggle timing sometimes so you don’t get black parsnips!

Confirming his players will train on both Christmas Day and Boxing Day, the Blues boss said: “We gave them a bit of a longer weekend off, but now it’s a proper flow through to the Arsenal game. These sort of games don’t come around many times in a career, so we want to give ourselves the absolute best chance of making the most of it.

Does missing out on 1 meal really make a difference? Even 1%?
Would have thought as long as you installed good habits over a season then the players will be in top condition and one day of some indulgence won't make a difference.

Bit old-school, but don't buy all this. Players still play when they're managing a knock and 80% fit. So how does a few roast potatoes and a slice of Vienetta make a difference?
