There was the Israeli ambassador to the UN (Danny Danon) on Newsnight last night who was just incredible. Repeatedly said everything was justified and that casualty numbers were wrong as they came from Hamas.
Derbyshire was appalled by his answers and I think it highlighted that for some, the narrative hasn't changed at all since the start regardless of the evidence.
Worth watching on the iPlayer if people want to see the level of denial that is going on.

Priti Patel had an odd take on this in the house yesterday. In a clumsy attempt to somehow big herself up for proscribing Hamas whilst in office, she somehow come to the conclusion that Hamas were the beneficiaries of Lammy's statement.

I think they're beyond the point of caring when it comes to Gaza, and who will stop them? The US could, but Trump's base contains millions of fundamentalist evangelicals who are fanatically pro Israel, he won't want to isolate them.
The West Bank is more tricky, but Israel is currently doing it's best to spark a third Intifada which could and would be used to justify displacement of the Palestinians in the name of security. | | | |

I heard it too (but couldn't find it on the BBC news website), and there is a lot of stuff on the World Service that ought to be much more highlighted in the UK than it is.
It brings to mind this great quote from George Orwell.

Having said that, both the BBC and Sky News have been showing much more of the horrors in Gaza in recent weeks, something they weren't doing earlier on in the conflict perhaps for the reasons that Orwell mentions. It strikes me that this may, at least in part, be a factor in the change of approach of the government because they can't hide behind public ignorance. [Post edited 21 May 10:13]

Quite. There’s obviously no justification or defence for the atrocities carried out by Hamas, but the reaction has clearly been well over the top and some in the Israeli government seem to be loving it. It’s pretty obviously genocide and multiple war crimes have been committed including murdering press and aid workers. And it’s not as if 7th October was the initiation. The persecution has been going on for decades. But then so has Palestinian militant reprisals. It’s very one-sided because of Israel’s greater strength and western backing though. | |

In part it has followed the decline of the left seen in the west in the past four decades. There was a large influx of Jews arriving from the former Soviet Union following it's collapse who tended to lean to the right politically. Also the failure of the peace process, followed by the second intifada and the wave of suicide attacks in the early 2000s saw the Israeli public take a sharp a sharp shift to the right. | | | |

This from Haaretz regarding a poll yesterday from Channel 13 but the left is very small.
Poll: Ex-PM Bennett Leads as Netanyahu Coalition Loses Knesset Majority
A new Channel 13 News poll released Tuesday predicts that if elections were held today, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's coalition would fall short of a majority, winning just 50 seats in the 120-seat Knesset.
Opposition parties would secure 41 seats, while a new party led by former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett would emerge as the largest, projected to win 29 seats.
Likud, under Netanyahu, is expected to receive 20 seats, unchanged from the previous poll.
The Democrats, a center-left party led by Yair Golan, would win eight seats – down from nine two weeks ago – following Golan's controversial statement Tuesday that "a sane country doesn't kill babies as a hobby or aim to expel a population."
Secularist right-wing Yisrael Beiteinu and ultra-Orthodox Shas are each projected to win 10 seats; far-right Otzma Yehudit, nine; centrist Yesh Atid, seven (a sharp drop from its current 24); and ultra-Orthodox United Torah Judaism, also seven.
Benny Gantz's centrist National Unity and the Arab Hadash-Ta'al would each receive six seats, while both the Arab Ra'am party and far-right Religious Zionism would win four. The Arab Balad party is not expected to cross the electoral threshold.
The poll also shows that 67 percent of the public support ending the Gaza war in exchange for the release of all hostages, while 22 percent oppose such a deal.
Support for Israel's expanded offensive in Gaza is more divided, with 44 percent in favor and 40 percent opposed.
