Back in my misspent Championship Manager youth I had a near encyclopedic knowledge of European football - I do well to know non-Ipswich players these days.

They don’t. It would be impossible, as you’d need to be watching every team to at least 2nd tier level across Europe as a minimum to cover all bases, plus teams in other continents. There aren’t enough days in the year to do that. They’ll be possibly watching highlight round up shows and maybe reading a few scouting reports. Most will be googling retrospectively as soon as a link pops up.

Of course, if everyone has detailed knowledge of one or two other teams then it’s possible that collectively there’s a huge amount of knowledge out there. Not remembering who said what about players may give the impression people know more than they do when in reality it’s just a lot of people each with a little knowledge.

Yeah there’s two or three posters on here who make out like they’ve seen every single player we’re ever linked with hundreds of times. At best they’ve probably seen them once or twice or know the name.

A bit sad really.

That's the social media world for you it does not matter what you say or do you will have several posters saying your wrong and they try to boost themselves by saying they know better . The trick is smile to yourself and move on .

I don't think it's that far fetched the posters know a lot about players if they follow a certain league closely.

e.g I really only follow the league closely that Town are in, so was an expert on third tier players a few years ago

I remember the same in League 1, it's just a higher level player now.

I remember lots of people saying how brilliant that Harper we had was going to be.......! I'd never heard of him.

Same about the not knowing, pretty numb now to the prices. The only Fofana I know is Wesley, only Palacios Wilson (getting on a bit probably) and only Ouattara the Brentford speedster. But others get very excited by the idea of these people so I buy into that.

I always smile when a poster immediately uploads a highlights video from youtube, especially as some don't actually highlight anything.

One from last night re Ouattara. In 2 out of the first 3 clips he ran down the wing and crossed into the side netting. Reminded me more of Danny Haynes than anything else. I'll reserve judgement after I've actually watched him play, but wasn't the sort of highlight I would call a highlight

It really isn’t that hard with the amount of football that is on TV these days, coupled with games like Football Manager.

I’ll use myself as an example, but over the years have done breaks aboard and taken in games - namely Austria and Holland - and I now find myself watching as many games as I can on TV from them countries and taking an interest in certain teams and players.

Also, and probably just me again, but I’ve taken an interest in how teams operate under the multi-ownership model - Strasbourg and Chelsea under BlueCo, FC Nordsjælland and their links to Ghana/Africa, the Red Bull model, the City Group etc. Doesn’t really take a lot to do research and then become quite knowledgable of teams/players, if you want to put a relative amount of time into it.

I dunno, feel like you've got to be stretching yourself pretty thin to have much more than a superficial knowledge of football in multiple countries.

I reckon I'm pretty world footbally, watch La Liga games and highlights most weeks, listen to On the Continent, watch the highlights packages for European competitions. I caught entire Strasbourg games a couple of times, saw highlights of some of their other games, but Ouattara hadn't left a particular mark. Scherpen, Van Oevelen, Emersonn, I don't how those lads would come onto your radar. Everyone else we've signed played in the Premier League or the SPFL, so I'd obviously heard of them.

Easy enough to research them after you see the links mind.

As I say, and I’m talking about me personally, I wouldn’t particularly say it’s hard to have that knowledge of a player or league if you do just watch or research a relative amount of it.

First came across Van Oevelen as I watched FC Volendam v PSV on the TV earlier this year. Scherpen I knew of mainly because I follow Austrian football and he was at Sturm Graz … then joins Union SG, who whilst aren’t under a multi club model, have close ties with Brighton because of the owner. Same goes for Emersonn, kind of look out for English players abroad and Charlie Cresswell had been at Toulouse for a couple of years so you watch games and highlights etc.

Of course that can be time consuming watching games, but going away and researching online doesn’t take a huge amount of time.

That’s just me though!

Same here except I had seen Florentino. I had heard of Scherpen but not been aware of seeing him play. I actually thought he was still at Brighton before we were linked with him.

I mainly became aware of Maeda when I saw that overhead kick in the old firm game.

You are doing far better than me. Yes, I watched a lot of the World Cup and a few Premier/Championship games, but nothing else really beyond ITFC. Add in how terrible I am with names and that’s me bewildered.

I thought Emersonn was a band member from the 70s, Scherpen an indelible pen, Florentino a little biscuit served after a nice meal and Lukic Leeds’ old goalie. Doesn’t Van Oevelen have a sister called Denise who was on Big Breakfast?

Akpom from his Middlesbrough time I knew and I’d heard of Maeda. We of course know Encisco and I noticed Fatawa last season. That’s it for me.

Exciting, if slightly scary, times.
