Why do so few goalkeepers become managers? 21:15 - Jan 10 with 2812 views | Melford | Nuno at Wolves is the only manager in the premier league who used to be a goalkeeper in his playing days. I can't be arsed going down the leagues but I bet there's no more than 5 in the whole 92 who used to play between the sticks.

I get the feeling many goal keepers are strange personalities that probably wouldn't suit management. It is a very different role to the outfield roles. Who would the most successful manager that was a former goal keeper be?

Didn't he used to take penalties when he played or am I confusing him with someone else? EDIT: Clearly he didn't from his stats but I felt there was an Italian one in addition to Rene Higuita of Colombia. [Post edited 10 Jan 2020 21:58]

Aren't roughly 9% of teams (and probably, therefore players/squads) goalkeepers? Certainly I would say far fewer than 9% of managers are.

Not sure Zoff actually won the World Cup as a manager - narrowly missed out on winning the Euros but here is a list of managers that suggests he may have been the most successful. Special mention for them lot up the road who appear to have had 2 (didn't realise Mike Walker used to be one). https://talksport.com/football/fa-cup/119559/goalkeepers-turned-managers-david-j

I'm a goalkeeper and I'm a strange personality, I've been playing in goal at 5 a side for the last 6 months after 15 or so years not playing and I dive for every shot like I'm playing on grass rather than a basketball court hard floor, get anything in the way of the ball and if that means my borllocks or my face then so be it.

"I get the feeling many goal keepers are strange personalities that probably wouldn't suit management." absolutely agree - goalkeepers should be locked up all week in a box, let out only to play on a Saturday afternoon. they shouldn't have friends or a family, just pure dedication to making that area their own and keeping that ball from the net.... if you've ever seen the munk on mean machine, you'd see why this all makes sense

Drummers glue the band together. Without percussion you have nothing.

He captained Italy in 1982 when they won the World Cup and from memory led them to the Euro 2000 final, however Lippi was the boss when Italy won the World Cup in 2006.

wasnt Alex Stepney a pen taker? As an aside, i watched the 74' Charity shield on YT the other day. Classic Leed v Liverpool, punches, tackles, Bremner and Giles v Keegan. Anyway, long pen shoot out to decide, with David harvey blasting high and wide and laughing about it with Ray Clemence.

I was at that Charity Shield game. Liverpool led out by Shanks for the last time, Leeds led out by Clough for the only time.
Why do so few goalkeepers become managers? on 08:56 - Jan 11 with 2092 views | ElephantintheRoom | For the same reason that managers now tend to appoint 'goalkeeping coaches'. Its a tad specialist. I'm of the opinion that 11 grown men know how to play football and the role of the manager issomewhat overegged. I think it was Ferguson who suggested that several Prem managers made clubs worse than they would be without them. It's interesting that so few managers come from outside of football... especially when the likes of Wnger and the special one, who got into management through unorthodox routes have been so successful Football management used to be a lot like the police and unions...you'd usually fins an aggressive scot shouting at people at the top.

Yes he did and I could have had free fish but I didn’t (don’t) eat seafood. After a days graft, he wasn’t allowed into the family home until he’d had a severe wash down. Had to install an external shower in the back garden
