"Nobody who is on the furlough scheme wants to be on this scheme," Say the chancellor. Surely some people getting 80% of their income so doing no work think it’s a pretty sweet deal?

There will obviously be some who do like it, as it may be more convenient for childcare etc.

But reality is if you earn over £30k you are down a lot of money a month - if someone earns £40k they are down hundreds of pounds a month.

If people earn less than this then they will be struggling for money because 20% is a big chunk to lose when you've got bills to pay.

It's a fantastic scheme which is really helping, but you have to be pretty lucky if you can just get by on a much lower amount for a long time, or have a secondary income

It might be possible to make up some of the shortfall in a monthly budget because of the lockdown though. Obviously it depends on individual circumstances but our commuting, travel, socialising and general fun spends are practical nil these days.

I appreciate not every family has the room in their budgets for those expenses at the best of times, but for those that do there is a potential saving to be made there.

There is the caveat that some employers are topping up the other 20% but in reality I expect that most employers simply can't afford to do that even if they wanted to.

It's a good scheme but all the issues you've pointed out are spot on.

I've been highly critical of the government and there's a lot of question marks, but I'll give credit where it's due, the financial interventions to support businesses and families has been phenomenal. There's a definite risk that the scheme is almost too attractive, but weaning off slowly appears to be the right approach that's been laid out. We'll be paying this off for years through taxes and inevitable cuts but needs must, and I must say well done Rishi Sunak, he's been about the only positive.

I'd like to get paid 80% of my salary to not work. I'll happily stand in and be a furlough double for anyone who wouldn't :)

If the experience of my family members is anything to go by, the joys of being paid for not doing any work are tempered for many by the uncertainty about whether they will have a job to go back to.

Works the other way round as well though.

Could be saving more than the 20% on petrol/travel/parking/childcare so different people different circumstances.

Some people might dislike their job and would rather be on 80% not going in than 100% at going in haha.

The good thing is you can work for a different employer so you can go and help out at supermarkets or whatever as well. Some will be benefiting and some will be struggling. However 80% is better than nothing/losing their job, which is the real reason why it was brought in.

The ones struggling are (single director) Limited companies who take basic wages and the rest dividends.

I'm disappointed by a distinct lack of people getting out on their £1000 bike to get a job or a second job.

They think the world owes them a living and a skinny latte.

a lot of employers also allow people to work whilst on furlough.

Mine does and I work part time to top up my income.

People ought to be able to take another job to have the chance to top up if they can.

Im one of thise in your last para. The initial rush is starting to fade now - 80% of normal would be lovely. Those of you on furlough should enjoy it as the opportunity it is.

I think the OP is wrong.

Sorry but those on furlough could well have zombie jobs and when it ends have no job.
It's no fun on furlough. I've a very strong chance of redundancy when it ends.

If you think those in that position think it's pretty sweet then I'm sorry but you have misunderstood it.

As Joe also states we are down a lot of money each month. My wife is furloughed.
I've taken a part time job to top up the income but not everyone has that ability so I guess we are lucky.

That's the issue. My concern for a lot of people is if businesses have adapted and readjusted with a smaller workforce then there might be roles that just never come back. Many businesses might think 'well we've got by for the last couple of months' and redundancies follow on from furlough, especially in certain sectors like hospitality and the high street where footfall is still going to be way down long after restrictions are lifted, and may never recover at all.

It's a comfort blanket for some, and some shortish term help, but I'm sure there are many people at home on furlough and not somewhat nervous about what the medium and longer term looks like.

I work in a pub so god knows when I'll be back, I'm enjoying playing guitar and Football Manager and reading loads of books at the moment but I probably won't have a job to go back to. The place wasn't doing great before the virus, I doubt they will be able to sustain two chefs on a full time salary after this.

Say what you like. I'm loving it work. To live (not live) to work. Dog fitter.

Than ever being on? Wonderful local. Walks got jobs done. At home hopefully in time. There will still be a job?

Who knows longs. There's food and a good bottle of wine.
