2021 Euros 09:52 - Mar 23 with 2706 viewsRadlett_blue

This 24 team jamboree across 12 host cities still seems to be going ahead. Given that most European countries are locking down harder in an attempt to prevent a 3rd wave of COVID and banning all but essential overseas travel, does anyone else feel uncomfortable with this?
I understand the reluctance to give up the TV revenue, but I would hope that some contingency plans have been drawn up. In any case, pressing ahead with a 24 team Euros seems the height of folly at a time when most people are unlikely to be able to take an overseas holiday. I would personally hold a slimmed down, behind closed doors tournament in one country or even one city, or cancel the thing altogether, but UEFA seem determined to carry on regardless.

I agree. It feels utterly ridiculous given the circumstances.

It's totally stupid, although I guess you could say the same thing about Champions League and UEFA cup matches going ahead.

I wouldn't be surprised if there is a push from UEFA to get the squads announced early and vaccinated but that would look awful politically given they aren't at risk groups.

Yes, some of the CL & Europa games are being played in odd venues to get around local country travel restrictions. Running a 24 team Euros under such circumstances is a much bigger ask. Only about 10 weeks to go & I assume UEFA are keeping their fingers crossed that things get better. If I was a politician, I wouldn't want to be hosting a European Football Championship while my citizens were told they couldn't go on holiday or maybe not event o the local park.

I've got a ferry booked and a ticket for a match in Copenhagen. For the life of me I can't see it actually going ahead as planned. Would be a fck sight easier for all concerned if they just made a firm decision.

Personally, I'd even bin all together, or go for a slimmed down knockout version. (although 24 rather than 16 makes that harder). So maybe the 16 teams (9 to 24) have a playoff. Then the 16 remaining teams do another. Last 8 then meet for 1 week at say Wembley for Sat-Wed-Sunday finals.

The inability to make a decision seems is in stark contrast to the Olympics where the Japanese have announced already no overseas fans.

Number of venues will end up being slimmed dramatically — perhaps even just England, Russia and a couple others — but yes it seems utterly incredible that this can be starting in under three months. On certain levels I'm definitely not complaining, it's going to take some real gymnastics to pull it off though.

Hasn't there been a suggestion of making it UK based with the games taking place a small number of venues like Wembley, Hampden, Millenium and the Aviva?

Yes, but unsurprisingly that idea was thrown out by UEFA. Not sure the UK population would welcome the addition of 500 overseas footballers plus the myriad of support staff at a time when they can't take their 2 weeks in Benidorm!

I didn't say it was a good idea and really think the tournament should be scrapped

but that involved common sense and we are talking about UEFA

Doubt that'll happen but it was definitely mentioned in a few places.

I agree too. I thought last year it should been cancelled, especially with the World Cup due in 2022. The qualifying teams for the Euros could have been carried over until 2024.

Postpone it until June 2022.

Then we can have the Euros in the Summer and the World Cup later that year in the Winter.

Unfortunately the ferry companies are not offering refunds and/or credit notes for bookings, even those made in January 2020 long before CV was on the radar.

They do allow you to book another slot though, hence the booking, rolled over from last year.

The footballing authorities would probably find a way to combine the Euros and the World Cup with some bizarre and incomprehensible system with stuff like coefficients, rankings and disciplinary records thrown in.

Completely agree. It makes no sense, when the government are banning people from going on holidays abroad with the potential of a £5K fine, but it's ok that this tournament can happen and people from all over the world can travel in and out of various European countries whom are struggling with their own battles with Covid? To me, it appears that the lure of the money from TV and advertising is forcing this to happen, people's safety and lives pale in significance. Yes, we all want the tournament to occur, but it feels so wrong to go ahead with it this summer.

I had a pretty strong conversation with someone close to. The discussions saying that it was going to kept in England about 3 months ago, never heard another word and you would have expected movement. Wouldn't be surprised to see the tournament confined to a central euro country to make travelling aa short as possible for all involved

I've got tickets and travel arranged, I'm certain I wont be attending anything on foreign soil and unlikely to attend any games here.

The last I read was that hosts will confirm on 5th of April how many supporters they'll permit to attend. I'd think at that point any changes in format etc will be decided.

It was a silly idea really in the first place, but hey, they probably did it for money.

Last year I was saying it needs to be amended, definitely a few months ago, and still now, they haven't changed it. Its remarkable really.

Should be a low covid country, who can cope with the number of games and with no fans.

Did I hear the Oylmpics has finally annouced there will be no fans? and that is after the Euros so just seems strange to have no changed it.

Yes, the Olympics have announced no international fans will be in attendance. I think Japanese fans will be, though.

It needs to all be in one place. I think countries will shut the current idea down as there'll be little time for testing between games and travelling. Having it all in one place is a much better idea. Somewhere where the covid levels are low and there's a high percentage of people vaccinated.

I know this sounds like a pitch for England but I really hope not. Selfishly I don't want to 'waste' our turn when it will be limited attendance. If this is seen as a one off emergency with no impact on future hosting decisions then England looks ideal. Not sure if there are other countries with low rates and high vaccinated percentage capable of staging the competition. If so, then they are equally good candidates.

If they go down the no fans route i'd love to see the games held in smaller stadiums. Wembley games with no fans just suck the life out of the game. Play the same game at a stadium like Fratton Park and it would be much better. Same with Portman Road. Perfect with the practice pitch for extra space for teams. The pitch would rule us out though.

Truly impaired.
