"Don't travel to amber countries even though it's legal".
If they don't want people to travel to them then move them all onto red or not allowed at all. It's ridiculous, the mixed messages are just pathetic and they are pushing the decision making onto the public rather than make the difficult decisions themselves.
ERm isnt it more a case of don't go somewhere on holiday because wanting to vomit in the streets and get two weeks of sunshine is not a sensible reason to maybe take a highly contagious virus around europe and/or the world?
Nice to see its OK to go and doge rockets in Israel though
They spent the whole of the last year doing this as well. Tell the public they can do stuff but encourage them not to. That way when things go wrong it's because of individuals being irresponsible rather than being the daily of the government.
If they are that worried about new variants and another potential spike then just freeze all international travel until the population is vaccinated and we know more about the vaccination's efficacy against some of the variants of concern. It's not difficult.

Exactly.
This form of messaging is just cowardly. Do what you were elected to do and make the decisions, don't hedge your bets so you can try and dodge the repercussions later.
It's also not helped by the airline and travel industry making statements on every platform available that the governments existing green list is far too strict and it should basically contain all the amber countries at a minimum.

Perhaps it would make financial sense to close the borders to the amber countries, because it would allow us to ease restrictions quicker and get the economy going, which could offset the financial loss of airline/tourism industries and give us the funds to furlough staff.
Maybe that's wide of the mark - I don't really have much knowledge of airlines in particular, except for this bloke I went to college with, whose' Instagram story is full of rants about how the government should be helping the industry and that actually it's safe for us to travel.

"a potential spike"
is that the same as a potential rise, or increase ?

Was going to post the exact same when I saw it, but figured I didn't want to get into another difference of opinion with those who think the holidaying public are the problem here.
Utterly absurd messaging yet again. Just like the "Please don't go to the pub" messaging when they left the pubs open. The messaging is the problem here and people pointing the finger at holiday makers are so missing the point imho.
As you say, absolutely ridiculous. We already know the people will jump at the chance to travel internationally during a pandemic (outsourcing their personal responsibility in the process) so this kind of vague announcement is as good as a nod and a wink to do so.

And there goes a potentially interesting discussion
The interesting bit is still here. The posts crying about Tory voters having a bad reputation and taking flak for excusing all manner corruption and ineptitude within their party were the bits that got pulled.

I would have liked the government to have run a scheme along the lines of "eat out to help out" for people to holiday in the UK. Genuinely surprised they haven't done that. Here's hoping for a good summer.
If you liked my post, please take the time to upvote it. It's very much appreciated.

You're going to have to be less opaque than that.
What potentially interesting discussion has been curtailed?

How demonising a large chunk of the electorate is in anyway helpful to achieving aims, and why that's a helpful approach to take to any post that criticises the government.
It probably wasn't the intention of this thread anyway in hindsight. But currently feels like;
post criticising government --> blame the idiots that put them there

I think they are trying to do that via the back door, but failing spectacularly.
I can't see a way forward with travel without Vaccine Passports, and the problem is the 18-30 can't go even if they want a jab and probably won't get their 1st until mid June.

That is generally how it works, unless the people who put them there are visibly upset at what their elected officials are doing and intend to do something about it other than just vote for them again (something which we see very little of on here).

I've not done that anywhere, I've blamed the government entirely as it's their fault in this instance.
However it seems I may have missed a number of posts which have been consumed by the ether.
