No need to mess about.

The midfield worries me. Mount is quality but sitting in with Rice in a two is not going to get the best out of him. Feel like we need someone else in there with the ability to do the dirty work. I'd have Mount then playing in front of them instead of Grealish. Foden has to start, and then it's any one of Sancho, Stirling or Rashford on the other side for me.

Personal preference

---------------------Henderson
-----------Walker - Maguire - Mings
James ------------ Rice - Mount ---------Shaw
--------------Sancho - Kane - Foden

So many options to chose from. Sancho has been the standout winger this year for me; 38 games, 16 goals and 20 assists. Foden and Mount have to be in there.

The amount of options really across the board is incredible, but attacking wise, wow.

For me Rashford and Sterling aren't in the same level of form as a Sancho or Foden.

But Rashford and Sterling still can offer so much, but do not warrant a starting position right now imo.

GK - Pickford

RB - Walker
CB - Stones
CB - Maguire
LB - Shaw

CDM - Rice
CDM - Henderson

RW - Foden
CAM - Mount
LW - Sterling

ST - Kane

You then have the likes of Grealish, Sancho, Rashford off the bench to make an impact.

He'll go with:

Pickford
Walker Stones Maguire Shaw
Rice Mount Henderson
Foden Kane Sterling

I wouldn't start Sterling on recent form, but Gareth loves him. Henderson or Phillips will depend on fitness but I'm a big fan of Hendo and think his experience in there will be vital. Shaw or Chilwell is a toss up really. Sancho, Grealish off the bench perhaps.

Pickford
Alexander-Arnold - Stones - Maguire - Shaw
Henderson (Phillips) - Rice
Sancho - Mount - Foden
Kane

Though I’d switch to a wing back system if Maguire isn’t fit:

Pickford
Walker - Stones - Coady
Alexander-Arnold - Henderson (Phillips) - Rice - Chilwell
Mount - Foden
Kane

We have a seriously strong squad with options! Grealish and Sancho would be starters for everyone else ( bar maybe France and Belgium ), yet they’ll be impact subs for us. We have the right backs from:

Champions league winners
League Winners
Former league winners
La Liga ( and RB in the team of the season ) winner.

Such good strength. It's pretty mad that we're all naming teams and largely leaving out the likes of Trippier (as you say La Liga winner and an incredible season from him), Trent A-A, Grealish, Sancho, Rashford.

The spine makes me a little nervous, I think beyond Maguire and Stones we're unproven, we're reliant on Kane and I think we're 1 top class central midfielder short if Mount or Rice are crocked. It's a lot to ask of an unproven Phillips / Bellingham at that level. When you look at France with Pogba, Kante, Sissoko, Rabiot I think they've got a bit more there. Greizmann, Benzema, Mbappe. Ooh la la. Tres bien.

Pickford (only because Henderson has hardly played)

James Maguire Stones Chilwell

Rice Henderson

Mount Grealish Foden

Kane

No idea how that would actually work but I think those are the best players we have available.

I am one of those who do not recognise the names provided so really do not know how much of a chance we have of being successful.

So, football fans (rather than ITFC fans only, such as myself) - how do we fare? Are we likely to progress far?

This is true and still an injury doubt, but still think he would be best for that position. If his injury is a problem I would be tempted to put Bellingham in there.

Pickford (but not 100% convinced by him

Trippier - Stones - Maguire - Chillwell (deliveries from set piece and full backs is key for me)

Rice - Henderson (if fit)

Foden - Mount - Greilish (F and G cutting inside and allowing for overlaps from fullbacks)

Kane

We have a very talented squad and I don’t think the competition is particularly strong this year however, I don’t trust Southgate to get the best out of this team at all.

There’s also a high chance we play one of Germany/France/Portugal in the first knockout round which could end our hopes pretty early.

If all fit, we've got one of (top 3 or 4) the best sides at the tournament I would say, especially going forwards. Defensively we're perhaps a little more suspect, and I think Rice has a huge role to play as a holding midfielder, a lot will depend on how he plays IMO.

It should be chalk and cheese compared to the sh1t Hodgson served up in 2016 though. We're a pretty good side to watch.

I think he'll go with a 3 at the back for the majority of games, which will see Walker on the right of a 3.

And then you pick between Trippier or James depending on how attack-minded the opposition are for the RWB spot. Trippier will get the nod where defensive ability is more important?

I can't see where TAA fits, unless Southgate surprises everyone and uses him further up the pitch in a 4231

I’d go with this. 3 at the back doesn’t suit the team but I worry Southgate will play that.

Mount isn't defensive enough to play alongside Rice, we'd get torn to shreds by any team with attacking quality.

If fit you'd probably want Henderson instead and then move Mount forward, probably in place of Grealish. If Henderson isn't fit I like the look of Bellingham alongside Rice, but it's a lot of pressure on a 17 year old and we know what the English press can be like if he doesn't perform.

It's a shame we only have 3 attacking midfield spaces for all the talent there.
