Ndaba getting a lot of love… 20:37 - May 8 with 3506 viewsunstableblue

… and praise for his performance

(And some amusing Ayr fans asking for a return)

But I am still confused… are we going to drop Edmundson for him?

Wolf is bossing the central role… Donacien and Burns is one of those combos we want to take into next term.

Ndaba is perhaps more natural in the role… but come on The Fridge is immense

“ I'd be shocked if he wasn't 1st team with Ipswich next year. Fits perfectly with the style of play and 3 at the back system. His loan spells have done him the world of good though. Credit to both teams 👍”

Honestly, if we got a bid for Fridge for £1.5-2m I'd take it in a heartbeat. Burgess and hopefully Ndaba are more than capable.

Double our money after a decent season and that'll do.

Just can’t see it unless it’s really big, Fridge is a leader in defence which Burgess isn’t and Ndaba is still young. I would imagine Ndaba will be 4th choice and Burgess will be used as back up / when we need more height in defence

Think we might be getting ahead of ourselves there. Burgess is OK but he's a clear downgrade on Edmundson. Ndaba and Baggott will get assessed in pre-season to see if they're what we want for the first team.

I'd expect Ndaba to get bumped up to squad player (covering 3 positions) and Baggott to go out of loan.

Burgess isn't half the player that Fridge is.

You'd take a bid for Edmundson in 'a heartbeat'? That's a very odd approach.

Our defence started creaking once he got injured, yet you'd willingly pass him up just to get a largely untested youth player in?

Clearly benefitted from regular 1st team matches... Makes me wonder if being 4th or 5th choice with us, and getting limited minutes , and playing in low key games would do much to further his development?... Good to see one of ours have a really productive loan spell though...Assuming Baggot goes out on loan next season. It could be a tricky one for KM, to keep both Burgess and Ndaba happy/motivated as back up?..,,

Wouldn't be surprised to see Ndaba join Salford (or someone else) permanently given the cover we have at CB.

Being in your main club's squad at a higher level is another good challenge though. Can you keep up in first team training, are you a useful, versatile sub, do you give a good account of yourself when opportunities arrive. All part of learning. I think promoting him to squad player is the next step.

I spoke to a former player about this recently, no prizes for guessing who, and he's played with him a lot and played against him and his view is that when he gets a look in here he'll end up being a really key part of things.

We are going to need a big squad, we play high intensity football under McKenna and before Xmas next year will have to play at the very minimum 5 cup games alongside the 23 league games.

If we get to January and he's nowhere near it after the opportunities he will have had then you look to reassess - but as things stand going into the season with him as one of the CBs who is versatile in this formation seems the right thing to do

It's now 2 loan spells where he has been very impressive with Ayr and now Salford, he's of course capable of stepping up into League 1

Think he looks exactly what KMc wants in a centre-half. Clearly likes what he's seen of him as well.

McKenna Keen to Have a Closer Look at Ndaba With Baggott Set For Similar Path 21st Apr 2022 16:00
Blues boss Kieran McKenna says centre-half Corrie Ndaba, who has spent the season on loan in League Two at Salford, is someone he wants to have a closer look at and that fellow central defender Elkan Baggott could follow a similar path next season. 1

Looking forward to seeing him next season. No need to sell at all, we play enough games in a season to keep Ndaba, Fridge, Woolf and JD happy.

And Burgess?

I was thinking of things from Ndaba's point of view rather than the club's. He's had two good loan spells, has just played a full season in League 2. Does he really want to come back here and be 2nd reserve?

If Ndaba isn't good enough to force his way into our team then he may as well head back to League Two, where he's proven to be oustanding.

The reality is Ndaba instead probably fancies his chance to win a place in pre-season or wait, a la Burgess, for a chance to get into the side and become hard to shift.

Cleary he is highly rated. We play 3 centre backs and need 5 really over the course of a season. Fridge / Ndaba / Burgess on left, Fridge / Wolf central and Donacien / Wolf on the right gives us great options. Ndaba offers something different on the left, Burgess is very handy because of his aerial dominance.

It allows Baggott to go somewhere like Salford, who have looked after Ndaba. They get another good young player, Baggott gets regular game time, Ndaba has a chance to shine at the next level (let's be honest - we signed Hladky, an outstanding League Two player), so we'd likely be fairly excited if we were signing Ndaba from Salford, as a top League Two defender that was young.

Also means there's a nice balance with expectations too as having five centre halves who all thing they should be starting every week isn't always the best situation and having a youngster who will accept game time when it comes along and potentially slowly grow than being chucked in the deep end may also be best for him.

The other thing about squad players is that a young, versatile, academy graduate, stepping up a league is ideal really. They cover lots of positions, so help you keep numbers down. They're stepping up, so know that they might need to be patient to get an opportunity. They're already in the club, so you don't have to make promises about their place in the pecking order.

It's very difficult to persuade high quality players to come to the club when you're explicitly or implicitly recruiting them as a squad player. We really need to make the best of players like El Mizouni and Ndaba in that regard.

I think also that when McKenna joined we were always chasing the play-offs and under pressure, so keeping that superb back three unchanged was important. I would like to think that next season we'll be able to do just a bit more rotation there particularly against the lesser opponents if we're doing well, and the five (with Baggott out on a good half season loan) will all be able to see significant action.

The signs are that KMac and Co.'s coaching can mould players into slightly different roles than they are used to, so I think we could have five versatile and interchangeable CBs there by the early part of next season. Even if that means a slightly weakened team in some games, it makes the squad stronger to cope with injuries and suspensions later.

I would imagine he'll either be in and around the first team squad or another loan to a lower L1 club may be another option.
