Gorbachev was one of the greatest statesmen of all time. Between him, Reagan and Thatcher they changed things for the good.
Yeltsin was such a complete loose cannon and massive alcoholic that when he landed in places on a state visits he was so pissed that sometimes the visits were cancelled and he never got off the plane.

On reflection, one thing that does stand out in the coverage is that whilst Western Europe and America see Gorbachev as a stateman who didn't try to prevent the collapse of the USSR the view is rather different in Eastern Europe.
Perhaps a more accurate view is that he was a product of the Soviet system and had less of it's flaws than his predecessors. Or indeed the enormous crook now in the Kremlin. | |

I’m not sure the people of Eastern Europe would agree with your assessment. The fall of the USSR freed them from violence, corruption and poverty. The Eastern European and Baltic states however have raised living standards massively as well as embracing democracy, freedom and capitalism.
Russia has a long history of veering towards autocratic regimes and corruption. Russian views are probably also influenced by years of state controlled information and propaganda, expats I’ve met hold a very different view. Slightly boring that you view everything as the West’s fault but not surprising. It wasn’t western firms that went in and raided their commodities but well connected Russians. |  | | |

He saw that communism was failing - corrupt and rotten to the core. So he ended the Cold War, freed Russian people from decades of autocracy and gave Soviet controlled states back their sovereignty. It's just a shame that today's regime in Russia seem to want to reverse all that progression. |  |
