Preston away the first Championship opposition for us on 16:38 - Jun 20 with 2860 views | J2BLUE | I don't remember any friendlies against teams in the same league before that Premier League Asia tournament they have each year. It just feels wrong. Oh and yes, I know there used to be friendlies against Norwich etc but i'm talking about 2000 onwards. Maybe there were some but I don't remember them. I suppose when it's all about fitness, no one really cares.

Part of the agreement for them buying Pigott or Ahadme from us?

I doubt it. Twitter really is filled with utter cretins. Who were they expecting, Real Madrid?

I think both Pigott and Ahadme would be realistic enough to know that Real Madrid aren't likely to be in for them.

Preston away the first Championship opposition for us on 17:23 - Jun 20 with 2584 views | muhrensleftfoot | As a season ticket holder of over 40 years I reckon I can count the number of friendlies I've been to on one hand. I just can't get excited about them. Results are utterly meaningless. Just a way to get fitness and match practice. Those who get all uptight because we fail to win a pre season friendly shouldn't worry, it really doesn't matter and has absolutely no bearing on the forthcoming season.

Personally I think it’s a good idea to play against an established championship side - one whose players will be eager to prove their fitness ready for the new season. Yes, it lacks the glamour of a top European or PL team but they tend to play a lot of their younger players for friendlies. Against a championship team it’ll probably be a lot more rigorous.

With PR out of action this summer I suppose we are a bit more restricted. I don't care if it is "boring", these matches are not for our benefit. [Post edited 20 Jun 2023 18:05]

Agreed. In theory much more competitive than playing Col U yet again.

Preston away the first Championship opposition for us on 19:38 - Jun 20 with 2195 views | Hipsterectomy | I saw Millwall and Charlton have agreed to a friendly despite being 'rivals'. A few seasons back Celtic and Rangers had plans to do an Australia friendly before the back lash from fans. I think there were even rumours that Ipswich and Norwich were open to a friendly a while back. It's more to make money nowadays than just fitness.

Can't see Preston v Ipswich being much of a money maker.

Indeed and what's wrong with playing a friendly against similar standard opposition, rather than when Town used to go on tour of Finland & rattle in umpteen goals against sub standard opposition.

We always used to go to the last home game before the season started. It was something to do if the weather was nice for a few £. You got a chance to see any new players and we’d take the chance to sit in different parts of the ground that were open. The result? Didn’t care a jot as they are, as you say, utterly meaningless. Just a bit of a laugh.

Or, sometimes Town play an away friendly that is local to me e.g. I am intending to go to the Stevenage game.

Preston away the first Championship opposition for us on 10:08 - Jun 21 with 1455 views | the_toff | It's a good one for us. A chance to take a close look at what average looks like in the Championship. I don't mean that disrespectfully to Preston but they've been a mid table side, and it's probably an opportunity for us to benchmark where we're at. You can only tell so much from a friendly but we'll be able to tell more than not playing it. I would say if we finish above Preston we'll have had at least a half decent season.
