Coventry showing how to do it 10:29 - Aug 11 with 3291 views | SomethingBlue | Hamer going to Sheff Utd for £15m, Gyokeres already gone for £20m. They paid around £1m for each. This is the model for clubs that want to compete in some kind of sustainable form; get the next wave of transfers right (they certainly have in signing Haji Wright) and you just keep on growing, it probably gets you promoted at some point.

Coventry showing how to do it on 10:42 - Aug 11 with 3118 views | tractorboy1978 | Hamer was a phenomenal pick up. Millwall have done it too with Flemming, Must say, I am quite surprised we don't seem to be venturing abroad - Ashton had some decent success with it at Bristol City with Kodija and Diedhou. It seems (reading between the lines) like McKenna wants players he knows and has really done his diligence on, with talk of a 'small pool of players'.

We can't run before we can walk. Our club is catching up on a decade of underfunding in terms of our recruitment structure, as well as on-field. Though I don't think it'll be long before we start finding some gems from further afield.
Coventry showing how to do it on 10:46 - Aug 11 with 3036 views | LankHenners | Thought they might be able to hang on to Hamer and take him up with them as and when, but goes to show what can be achieved in the market as you say. Bit of talk yesterday re: Alex Scott and people on here saying we don't have anyone we can sell for close to what he's just gone for because of age profile, experience etc. but £15m for Hamer, a 26-year-old who prior to joining Coventry had had a relatively unremarkable career, tells you a very good Champ player (and we have a few who could certainly become that) can fetch a pretty good amount of money. As an aside the Wright signing is incredible business, would back him to completely dominate a lot of defences at this level.

Yes this has surprised me too. Obviously with homegrown players you have more of an idea of what you are getting and how they will cope with the Championship, but if it goes well then there is huge upside to brining in foreign talent at lower prices. Would make even more sense to look at that market given we seem to be targeting players who end up just out of our reach financially or have better options. If you can't compete with clubs financially then you have to be smarter and sometimes that means taking risks.
Coventry showing how to do it on 10:50 - Aug 11 with 2981 views | ChampionsofInnsbruck | It all depends on how that money gets reinvested, if you sell too many key players and invest poorly you generally get relegated and demoralise a fanbase in the process. Coventry have been on a road to recovery in recent years, which is good to see, but there is always a risk in selling key players when they often push the average ones up with them, and for clubs like Coventry it's a lot harder to replace that quality.

Coventry haven’t sold to balance the books. Evans did though.

That’s the thing - it’s taken the new owners a couple of years simply to reclaim Suffolk from Norwich. It’ll take much much longer to put in place a good scouting system which covers Europe.

Hamer was the main player I was hoping to see live this season, he’s been brilliant whenever I’ve seen Cov on TV (all 4 times 😂)

Coventry showing how to do it on 11:31 - Aug 11 with 2525 views | itfc1108 | Just on a side note to this topic, it seems quite common now for teams which are promoted to the premier league, to recruit players who excelled in the championship alongside them that season. But does anyone know or remember before the premier league, when teams were promoted to division one from division two, if these teams did the same,? I imagine the disparity between clubs finances weren't anywhere near as great as today, so maybe a Luton or Ipswich could compete with a Liverpool back then on transfer fees and wages, and pick from the same pool of playes.

True to a point. Although so much of recruitment these days is data driven - I'd be really interested to know what advantage some clubs have over others because it feels like virtually all Championship sides should have access to the same information and stats. Presumably it is simply manpower and having adequate analysts to monitor that data. [Post edited 11 Aug 2023 13:35]

Do we have a European scouting network at all?

I know it takes time to set these things up, it's not as simple as just having someone's phone number and this isn't a you-know-who-esque negative slant for the sake of it, but you'd have thought the guy we hired from Man Utd, of all places, to run our scouting network would already have some 'ins' to undervalued or less competitive markets.

Also, thanks to Brexit, it’s changed from when we last recruited from abroad.

Can't imagine Coventry had a well developed overseas scouting network considering they've been skint for years and they still recruited Hamer in their first season back in the Champ. Plymouth and Wednesday also recruited from abroad this year. Maybe McKenna being extremely specific in the type of player he wants is potentially what is limiting us looking farther afield.

The money has gone even more nuts recently, and it’s inevitable that it’ll trickle down and clubs will look to the championship for better value. For example I think £10m for Davis would be cheap in this market.

Outside of Celina and Bennett's loan deals, I think the last player we signed from outside the Uk/Ireland would be Simon Dawkins? Even then, the majority of his career was spent in England - we just happened to sign him from whichever MLS team it was. The last one that I can remember that went on to have a career of note in an Ipswich shirt is probably Knudsen?

Indeed it did, but I believe it is more straightforward following rule changes that mean subject to minutes played by English players we could sign up to 4 players from anywhere in the world without the need for a work permit.

It’s an interesting point but we do have a recruitment team and so much is data driven and so much match video footage available that I’m not sure it’s done in the old traditional scouting way. Of course I could be totally wrong. Not exploiting the foreign player option seems to be a bit of an own goal…
