Williams signing gets better the more I think about it 07:57 - Aug 23 with 5257 viewsSomethingBlue

The lad has just turned 22, played almost 50 games – most of those starts – in the Prem, several more in the Europa, and has something big to prove with a manager he has known for years. Presumably he and McKenna feel they can get him back to his best. It's a really high-calibre arrival if we do it. Only question mark really is the lack of football over the past year but by all accounts he's had a good pre-season. I guess there's another over where he is actually used ... I can see the argument for right wing-back that a few have raised ... but it's a really big boost to the depth of quality available to us in two or three different positions, we are going to have to be so good defensively this year if current form is to be maintained.

It’s a fantastic signing and a symbol of how far we have come but the way some fans are reacting you’d think Greg Leigh was Paulo Maldini. We have literally signed a Man United defender with 50 Prem appearances who can play 2 or 3 roles.
I think it’s a sign of something, not sure what, but I don’t believe any of our fans should get too attached emotionally to any of our players. They will always be possibly subject to an upgrade every window.

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!

Leigh is clearly a good guy, always stood in admirably, also deserves a lot of credit for the way he held himself knowing he was around as backup. At 28 he should be playing games for a decent team so it makes sense that he leaves. Agree about emotional attachment, I think we can and should look fondly on all the players who got us up last season given the importance of the achievement but many/most of them will see their journeys with us come to a natural end over the next couple of years.

You've gone a bit early there Chickers, he hasn't actually signed yet...

Young, versatile and a potential upgrade on what we have. He's a total 'KM' signing.

You are right about not getting attached to players because the franchise only signs mercenaries.

Thought I'd get in there first.

I must admit that I have never seen him play or heard of him. On the other hand I had never heard of Leif Davis either, and what a signing he has been!
I completely trust McKeanna if he rates a player and on paper he looks exactly like the kind of player we are looking for these days, young(ish) and with lots of potential to improve under the guidance of McKenna and his team.
I don´t feel "wow" as I did when we signed Morsy, Broadhead, etc, but I think this one could be a real coup.

I can see why we would go for him, given his experience with ManU and his young age.
Then when I did a Google search for young ManU player joining Ipswich Town, Lee Martin's name appeared at the top of the search list... Hmmmm

It will be a fantastic signing for the all the reasons you suggest. He's a year younger than Davis too with vastly more experience at a higher level and we all know how that transfer has played out. You'd assume Clarke is going to be the one who's role changes but I am intrigued to see what McKenna has planned.

Clarke's situation sounds, from the outside, completely unsustainable to me – certainly in terms of getting him starting regularly for a whole season. Only speculating but I wonder how long before we resign ourselves to a long-term absence for him and whether having Williams around facilitates a rejig on that side.

the addition would also allow K McK to flex the shape, allowing Davies to build upon his offensive style of play and move forward into a winger role should the situation dictate a change of shape.

Certainly gives us the scope to be able to manage him and his minutes far more. For all the love we have for JD (and rightly so) he isn't what McKenna wants in a full back.

Also be interesting to know what the buy clause is and if it is contingent on promotion. If McKenna can get Williams going again you've got a full back that would be in demand elsewhere next summer for sure.

I think the other thing about Clarke, aside from his injury, is that it's entirely possible that Williams is just better than him. I like Clarke, like his passion as well, but he's hardly set the world alight on the right hand side like Davis has on the left. It's possible he drops out even when fit and becomes a good utility player who can play anywhere across the back 4.

Clarke is excellent. His role in revitalising last season for us is under-rated amongst the credit given to Broadhead, Hirst and Luongo. Huge upgrade on JD in terms of how McKenna wants us to play.

Oh no luv don’t get me wrong, I phrased that badly. What I mean is regardless of how well our players do now, there is always a chance they will be moved on and the better they do, the more likely that might become! Sorry.

In fairness Clarke has been superb – and he clearly wasn't 100% on Sat but you could see the difference when he came on, one interception and drive forward in the second half was the kind of transformative action Donacien (for all we love him) is simply not capable of.

In L1 we signed players for the championship. We're now buying players that can play in the Premier. This would be a great signing, even if it doesn't strengthen our most in need areas.

I don't doubt he's an upgrade on JD, who himself has been excellent over the last couple of years too. I just think at the higher level we're playing at now I wouldn't rule out Davis & Williams in the full back roles with Clarke providing the competition in the near term. I think Clarke has a big future though and I also see him as someone who could play in the middle of a back 4 or 5 if needs be too, so his versatility is really valuable.

In reality, it’s much better ITFC does or doesn’t sign players based on what members of this forum think or say. This is not a comment aimed at the OP, more the reaction and general response based on zero knowledge of the player personality or attributes!
