Paul Cook at Chesterfield 12:10 - Sep 28 with 9680 views | ChampionsofInnsbruck | Paul Cook's Chesterfield have now taken 31 points from a possible 36 available in the National League this season. - Bet365 Good to see him recover some of his past form there, not a bad guy at all, just didn't deliver here. I hope he does well and gets them back into the Football League.
Paul Cook at Chesterfield on 12:24 - Sep 28 with 5379 views | ArnoldMoorhen | I agree. I don't put him in the same category as others amongst our recent Roll of Dishonour, not least because his father died during the short period that he was with us, and it clearly all became too much. He could spot a player, had players who would move to work with him, wanted to play attacking football and was genuine in his wish to rebuild a relationship with the fans. Things didn't work out here, but I am so glad that he has got his mojo back.

Did badly when he came in, blamed the players. Then had the biggest budget relative to the club's position of any manager before McKenna, signed loads of players, brought in some mates to do some coaching, did badly and started blaming the players again before being sacked. It's quite remarkable how much of a pass he gets from fans.

That’s one reading. But an unfair one IMO as it doesn’t address where we were when he took over from Lambert and then how easy it is to get a completely brand-new team playing. I’m certainly glad we have McKenna but a lot of the expectations on Cook when he took over during the lowest point of our modern history always seemed ridiculously short-sighted and unreasonable. But I’m glad McKenna didn’t have to deal with all that. He may well have done a lot better but it could also have stymied his career here if he didn’t hit the ground running. Especially with a style that demands working with the players to develop their roles and understanding of situations.

You could argue he’s making McKenna look good by leaving him so many good signings

He is a people person, an energiser, and an enthuser. He moved to the biggest job of his life, uprooted from the North West, and his Dad died. Given all that, and the difficulties he inherited at Ipswich with morale being at rock-bottom, it isn't surprising that when results didn't go well at the beginning he didn't have anything left in the tank to pull it around. He isn't as meticulous, detailed and thorough as Kieran. He doesn’t appear to have as in depth an understanding of the opposition. He got good results from inspiring players lower down the pyramid. When things were tough for him he didn't have the same ability to inspire players higher up the pyramid, some of whom had been pretty much abused by the previous manager and so were wary of big promises. He simply isn't a patch on McKenna. But he is a genuinely likeable guy who got his big break at the wrong time for both him and Ipswich. I am pleased that he has got his career back on track. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Only if you are a habitual contrarian. The vast majority of the last League team (players and subs) were McKenna signings. But some of the others were signed by Cook when we were in League One and are acquitting themselves very well at the top end of the Championship. Which demonstrates that Cook could spot a player, and that McKenna can get them playing to their potential and mould them into a team with an effective style of play.

Signing good players with a big budget on long deals is the least difficult thing for any manager to do.

Maybe? But if it had been another Manager they would have signed in all likelihood players they knew and had worked with too. My point is basically SteveM is spot on.

I find it really hard to square this idea of Cook as "likeable" and a "people person", with the guy who regularly offered out his players as scapegoats to a rather hostile fanbase. Not to mention the Bomb Squad stuff and the 30-second exit interviews, amongst other things. Maybe that wasn't the real him and reflected the impatience of a man in a high pressure situation going through a tough time in his personal life. Nonetheless, I can't really see what qualifies Cook as "likeable" on the basis of his time at Ipswich. For me, it's not just in terms of results that Cook and McKenna are night and day, it's in how they conduct themselves. [Post edited 28 Sep 2023 13:50]

Our managers at the early stage of Evans tenure didn’t find it that easy
