It's why we have 20-70 mph speed limits and laws banning under 16s buying alcohol and cigarettes, etc too.

Johnson's callous approach was far from a measured / refined assessment of the impact of lockdowns. He was intellectually unable to grasp the exponential nature of the growth of COVID hence why we locked down late (and for longer and with more deaths) than necessary.
He did this not once, but twice, demonstrating an unforgivable approach with the health of our elderly and vulnerable.
So whilst you are right that decision makers do need to make considered judgements of the costs and benefits of lockdowns (Financial and human/social) - that was not his approach. His was one of denial and grasping at straws and excuses for doing nothing - and thus ensuring 000s of needless deaths.

I really don't think he grasped it. It was doubling every 2-3 days so a weeks delay meant x4 the number of cases and also a longer lockdown before the cases reduced to whatever was seen an acceptable level.
His dithering meant longer lockdowns - if he was driven solely by populism (with no care for loss of life) he would still have wanted as shorter lockdowns as possible and so gone early.
I really think he is that stupid - great with a greek or latin phrase - but not so good with O level maths. | |
