It's a valid point, if you're a f**king sociopath. Quite a lot of those people who 'were going to die anyway' had good lives that were expected to go on for a fair bit and families who miss them. I'm now going to mute this thread, because it won't do the old brain weasels any favours.

It’s not a valid point, it is a sound bite. A government should be capable of thinking beyond simple “divide and rule” style slogans when governing.

if boris was so keen on this sacrifice, he should've refused treatment. maybe the sacrifice was only for other 'elderly' people

He denied it. Or lied. Depends how you want to put it Cummings has called him out on it, but we’ve never seen it expressed by Johnson until today.

Judgements are made on economy/freedom Vs health and safety all the time. It's the reason we don't ban all alcohol, or impose 15mph speed limits everywhere.

Except this isn't a risk management judgment of that nature at all is it? This is about letting older people almost certainly die (and many of them elected Johnson - let's not forget that) to keep short term cash flowing.

They are. It's why we have 20-70 mph speed limits and laws banning under 16s buying alcohol and cigarettes, etc too. We are all going to die one day. It doesn't justify letting the bodies pile high, especially when that policy was more damaging to the economy in the long run.

Johnson's callous approach was far from a measured / refined assessment of the impact of lockdowns. He was intellectually unable to grasp the exponential nature of the growth of COVID hence why we locked down late (and for longer and with more deaths) than necessary. He did this not once, but twice, demonstrating an unforgivable approach with the health of our elderly and vulnerable. So whilst you are right that decision makers do need to make considered judgements of the costs and benefits of lockdowns (Financial and human/social) - that was not his approach. His was one of denial and grasping at straws and excuses for doing nothing - and thus ensuring 000s of needless deaths. Those that died might have been primarily the elderly but that does not for a minute mean his decision making was somehow ok then.

I am not sure intellectually unable is the correct phrase. The man is clearly not stupid. I think he is such a populist he was unwilling to make what he saw as an unpopular decision. Which makes it worse really.

Aiye, he put all his eggs in one basket that he could be a cult of personality like Trump, it turns out that was short sighted.

I really don't think he grasped it. It was doubling every 2-3 days so a weeks delay meant x4 the number of cases and also a longer lockdown before the cases reduced to whatever was seen an acceptable level. His dithering meant longer lockdowns - if he was driven solely by populism (with no care for loss of life) he would still have wanted as shorter lockdowns as possible and so gone early. I really think he is that stupid - great with a greek or latin phrase - but not so good with O level maths.

All of us have a price. If the treatment cost isn't considered viable, it won't be made available. That's why sometimes people have to raise their own funds to get life saving treatment elsewhere.

Was sufficient PPE considered too expensive for the healthcare workers who died? Seems contracts for mates was far more important. [Post edited 30 Oct 2023 17:53]
