“Blinkered” is being very polite. Presumably the word you wanted to use didn’t get past the swear filter.

David Davies is a climate sceptic twonk (from 1st hand experience). He shouldn’t be taken seriously.

I disagree.

Unless people voting con-servative only have one braincell that functions correctly, they're not "blinkered" - they're selfish, greedy, uncaring, stupid, brainwashed, corrupt, self-serving, unpleasant, hypocritical, amoral or a combination of those things.

There is one other category - and that's 'old'.

Because I have two (let's say 'senior' aged) relatives who will inevitably vote Conservative at the next election and say something along the lines of: 'I know the country is in a mess, but it's nowhere near as bad as the Wilson/Callaghan governments of the 70s'.

Bizarrely, neither vote for the Tories in local elections because they say 'Labour and Lib Dems are much better at running local councils than the Conservatives, but you could never trust them to run the country.'

That, plus none of the homelessness and struggling to make ends meet (that the majority of the country is experiencing) remotely resonates with their experience living in their comfortable, mortgage free, retirement lives in Woodbridge. Genuinely - their biggest political issue is opposing Woodbridge council's intent to pedestrianise large parts of the town.

Yep, the brainwashing of that generation happened decades ago. Despite everybody being able to live and see what the Tories have done to the country and its economy, the 70's brush is still used to tar Labour with in constituencies up and down the land.
The 80's was a brilliant decade for Tory propaganda and they've been feeding off it since.

It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.

A post like this is blinkered. You are supposed to vote for the most capable candidate who will best represent your constituency - irrespective of the party they represent.

The mythology of the 1970s is really something extraordinary.

You'd really forget that:
(a) The Conservatives governed for almost half of the decade.
(b) For all the inflation, real wages actually went up across the 1970s.
(c) Economic growth was higher in the 1970s, than it was in the 2000s, 2010s, 2020s
(d) The 1970s was the UK's high point for social equality and social mobility statistics.
(e) Across the decade there was a massive rise in home ownership.

If you listened to the national mythology about it, you'd assume the trade unions switched the lights out on the 1st January 1970 and nobody switched them back on until Thatcher won the 1979 election.

When exactly is Britain supposed to have had a "socialist regime"?

Tories are such massive drama queens. You act like paying slightly higher taxes for a bit is the same as being sent to sodding Siberia.

It’s a cult isn’t it? All quite strange given the evidence in front of our eyes. And that’s before we get on to assumptions that anyone who doesn’t like the Tories must by default support Labour (or that Labour are in any way socialist come to that).

Surprised by that post. You usually make an effort to be balanced.

My nan is none of those things. She's in her 80s, doesn't pay too much attention to politics and will inevitably vote Conservative because she always has and it's too late to get her to change now. I think there are many older people who might well have enjoyed good financial times but also worked bloody hard for it who want to feel secure in old age and unfortunately think of the Tories as the party who are more likely to handle the economy well.

FWIW, I don't have an issue with blinkered.

Yes you are supposed to. Unfortunately in my constituency the majority choose to do the opposite of this and vote for the least capable candidate (Therese Coffey).

I know some people who are trying to get the pedestrianisation of the Thoroughfare through - the opposition to it is absolutely crazy - stats have shown that the current layout combining road, pavement and unloading areas is far more dangerous for old people in terms of slips, trips, falls and mobility scooter navigation than a properly constructed brick walkway - they are literally opposing their own interests!

Just one small problem; sell their houses to who, Ben? Fcking Aquaman?

I suppose that's a fair point and I too know elderly folk who vote Tory without applying much in the way of critical thinking to their choice, rather perhaps a reflexive habit. On the whole though I agree with Ryorry.

I imagine that if people were to consider that before voting Labour, they would conclude that as Labour are not offering a socialist platform, it's very unlikely they'll turn the UK in to a Soviet Republic.

I'm amazed this is upvoted as it just doesn't reflect reality. If there was a really competent person but who represented the Nazi Party, nobody would vote for them for obvious reasons.

It's denying reality to ignore the fact that for the most part, the people getting voted for belong to a party that is then whipped to vote in a certain way.

Well this doesn't include me because I will not be voting Conservative at the next election, having done so in every general election since 2001. I make no apology for my past choices and stand by them. I am guided by two principles - "It's the economy, stupid" first, and boring basic competency second ("runnin tings") and feel we have been failed on both counts.

I'm not sure who I will vote for yet, unlikely to be Labour, I will scrutinise all the candidates in CS&NI before making the call. But I am at peace with the prospect of a Starmer administration. I hope the Conservatives use their pending long spell in opposition to get their house in order.

You are right to an extent, but I can't help but feel we would get a better parliament overall if more voters ignored party and gave the candidates proper individual scrutiny.

Potentially, but it has other issues. I'm not going to vote for someone, however competent they are, if when they get into Parliament they then vote in a way on national issues that are contrary to my own beliefs.

This is exactly why I dislike our current system. Ideally we'd need two votes, one for Parliament and then a local representative. Combining the two doesn't work.
