The Netherlands just got a huge dose of right wing crazy 09:25 - Nov 23 with 5203 viewsElderGrizzly

An openly anti-Islam, racist, anti-immigration, climate change denying party is going to be the biggest party in the Dutch parliament

Buckle up...

He's previously called for a ban on mosques and the Koran.

Sad times and incredibly worrying that a good portion of the electorate in many countries seem to think this is the way to go.

37/150 for a pretty extreme-right party seems to leave them with a pretty big challenge to get the further 39 seats required for even the smallest of majorities.

Is it likely that the more sane parties (perhaps even those who wouldn't usually work together in a month of Sundays) will coalesce in order to keep Wilders out of power, or are there enough smaller parties hungry for their day in the sun that will allow Wilders to pick up a few MPs here and there?

You ain't a beauty but, hey, you're alright.

Seems to me that UK commentators cannot understand more mature political systems than our FPTP. The headline is not about the far-right "winning" the election, but about them being the largest party, still with only around 25% of the vote. BBC headline said they intend to ban the Koran and take the NL out of Europe, as if it were fact.

Still not great though.

Thankfully the way parliament is set up in the Netherlands at present even being the largest party they still won't be able to do much damage. It might be another period of no Dutch government which in and of itself is quite worrying.

I've only seen the Guardian in in the OP and the BBC, and neither seem to suggest they've won anything yet in fairness. Both point out they'd need to secure significant additional support to be able to form a government.

I'm not sure of the likely appetite in other parties to do so, but with a large number of opposition diametrically opposed to their vile views it could well be difficult.

It's still pretty depressing. I've always found the Dutch to be a sensible lot - I'm surprised so may fall for the shtick of a populist grifter.

What gets me most about the article on the BBC homepage is that they seemed to have used a picture of Harry Enfield...

I think that's the worry. And the unrest potentially caused by those who voted for the 'largest party' to effectively be ignored politically.

As others have pointed out, this isn't about Wilders being PM, but the direction it takes the Dutch parliament as they can't simply ignore them.

Indeed. The PVV and its views are easily covered by a majority of the Conservative party and its voters. Probably some of the Labour Party and its voters too.

Not just 5live though, when I was listening to Radio Two after The Folk Show last night the news reporter started going about what happens if the Netherlands political system ignores the will of the people - all 25% percent of them. Full on Brexit playbook talk.

They can’t be ignored but hopefully needing other parties support, their policies will be watered down. He’s already limited his anti-Muslim rhetoric and has conceded that there is little appetite for Holland to leave the EU.

I will say - imagine being a Muslim in Holland right now. You speak Dutch as a first language and are quite westernised in everything apart from religion. But that isn’t enough for a lot of your compatriots (even your friends). Must make that person very angry.

I'm a big fan of the Netherlands and we used to have a family holiday every year when the kids were little. However outside of the urban Randstad it's quite provincial and small c conservative - at least that was my perception.

Especially as this is his opening vision as of about an hour ago

Geert Wilders said today that he wants to be prime minister and that he was in favour of a referendum on whether the Netherlands should leave the European Union, Reuters reported.

“But the first thing is a significant restriction on asylum and immigration,” the far-right politician said.

It's weird, I'd have thought the racists and bigots would be slowly dying out as we get more enlightened, but they seem to be making a comeback in recent years.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

He's got 25% of the seats in the election so quite a large number have gone for it.

Think there's always been a bit of an undercurrent of Islamophobia there though, I noticed it when I visited back around 2005ish and it was pretty open in places. I suspect it's this coupled with high levels of immigration into a small country that's caused the vote.

Those racists and bigots still need their puppets in Government and have the money to pay to ensure they maintain influence

Using their system UKIP would have had many more MP's and around the turn of the century the BNP would have had seats, both groups would have held the balance of power, and the issue with that would be it would align the Lib-Lab-Cons closer together and thus by proxy, increase the support for those opposing them. There is no perfect political system, but I for one am thankful we never had that outcome.

I wonder if we might eventually move away from just vilifying those that vote for these parties and try and understand the reason why these messages are winning votes in nearly every European Country. Every Country has a hard core of bigots and xenophobic people but they have historically been marginalised in political power. But every Country has seen people who would not usually align with these messages vote for them. Including historically Liberal countries like Sweden. These parties loose support very quickly if people feel they are being heard by the mainstream but there are whole sections of populations who feel they are not part of a Liberal agenda that is being imposed on them and they live in the communities that compete for housing and healthcare with migrant populations which governments have failed them on in just about every country in Europe.
This result is a reflection on mainstream politics failures. Failures to recognise they have become elite and disconnected, failure to have reasoned debate and just label people who aren't with their agenda, failure to provide policies that house people and provide for their health and security.
But as per Brexit and election of Victor in Hungary and the Polish judiciary interference and rise of right wing in Germany and Netherlands and Sweden and Italy, there will be no self-awareness, just vilification and judgement of the voters.
The leaders with these messages become irrelevant eith about 4 perc support when you stop the soundbites and address the issues.
