At least Biden would surround himself with competent people. Trump, as evidenced by what has happened to so many of his former associates, will just use anyone, including those of criminal persuasion, who will let him say or do whatever he wants.

Americans want a strong economy and a strong leader and at the moment they're not convinced that Biden can deliver on either. Some of the possible implications of a second Trump term are globally terrifying but it looks like that's where we're heading.
Forget Sunak/Starmer on 07:13 - Jun 28 with 4035 views | EddyJ | Its looking likely that Trump will win the presidency. Its also looking likely that RN will be the largest party in France. What does that mean for Ukraine? Two of the biggest players in NATO being actively pro-Russia. A lot of responsibility for the stability of Europe is going to fall onto Starmer.

Biden has to be replaced, it’s an embarrassment that he is standing - you can’t watch that debate and think he is in any way still competent to stand. Age catches up with everyone and it certainly has him.

Oh I agree and it is thoroughly depressing. But if I had the choice between those two, it would be Biden every time. Trump is a monster.

The American economy is strong at the moment in terms of growth, low inflation, high jobs numbers and it's predicted to continue. But you don't see many people talk about that - not even Biden. | | | | Login to get fewer ads
Forget Sunak/Starmer on 07:44 - Jun 28 with 3927 views | baxterbasics | It was all pretty unedifying. They actually argued about golf handicaps FFS.. But when Trump said: "I really don't know what he said at the end of that sentence, I don't think he knows what he said either." Felt like game over. Biden hasn’t been officially nominated yet so there is time to fix this.

Well, have a little look at our political landscape - we are heading in the same direction. I mean, have a little look at what we have had to vote for in recent years (on all sides). Whilst maybe not at the US level - it's hardly inspiring is it?

Biden’s team are steering away from this subject because despite impressive growth, interest rates are still high and the Fed has suggested this week they may not drop at all in 2024. The cost of living has still increased faster than wages for Americans, so disposable incomes have still taken a hit. Meanwhile Biden has set them on collision course with China. With the dollar so strong, Chinese imports (particularly cars) have been undercutting US manufacturing. It didn’t make big waves in the news but Biden quietly slapped tougher trade barriers on Chinese imports - harsher than even Trump with his trade war. That’s not going to help an already strained geopolitical relationship between the US and China.

All the alternatives in each party have been sidelined. In the Republicans, crushed by the Trump juggernaut and even moderates' fear of its adherents. Plus lots of money from ultra-wealthy, conservative families (not to mention tech-rich free-speech extremists) who know he will let them do what they want in return for a bit of flattery. With the Democrats, it's the difficulty of finding a candidate who can unite the various factions in the party, while not hitting any of the triggers which cause alarm in sensitive parts of the electorate (Buttgieg is gay, Sanders a socialist, Harris a woman and not white). I think a lot of people had been pinning their hopes on Kamala Harris, but she hasn't been dynamic enough to develop a real profile (always a tough job for a VP, but it has been done - think Nixon and Bush Sr). Indeed, that was my point. Any hope of replacing Biden with Harris, even during this term, let alone next, has been a non-starter.

Looking at Biden it’s pretty obvious that Harris is going to be President in the middle of the next term if Biden wins. Vote Biden -Get Harris will turn a lot of people away from the democrats.

Forget Sunak/Starmer on 10:11 - Jun 28 with 3066 views | J2BLUE | I'm 15 mins in and Biden has already lost. They need to act quickly and replace him. What we would give for Obama coming back. Could he be vice president or is that not an option either? I'm guessing not an option as the VP could become the president in certain circumstances.

Absolutely. I stayed up to watch, and was shocked at how quickly he descended into incoherence. I was thinking "How can he keep going for 80 minutes?" Had it been a Boxing Match then you would have been hoping that his corner would throw in the towel. Standing aside as candidate isn't enough to save the Election for the Democrats. He needs to resign as President, so that Kamala Harris can have the status of being President going into the next debate and the Election itself. She is the only alternative, the only game in town, because there simply isn't time for a rerun of a conpetitive Democratic Party nomination process.

https://www.natesilver.net/p/joe-biden-should-drop-out?utm_source=substack&p Good blog from Nate Silver - who has had a lot of criticism for saying how obvious it is Biden is old and needs to be replaced. Just go Harris or Newsom and get on with it, Biden can't win
