McKenna turning up the heat on Ashton 20:40 - Jul 27 with 21900 views | portmanking | I got the impression from Kieran's post match comments that he was giving Ashton a little nudge to focus minds on strengthening the squad. As well as Harness did, to have him, Ladapo, Barbrook etc. involved underlines how thin we are. The squad did need major surgery to compete next season, no matter how attached we are to the Class of 2023-24.
McKenna turning up the heat on Ashton on 20:42 - Jul 27 with 12633 views | chicoazul | This can’t be correct. Many very learned TWTDers have been telling us there is no way McK would buy 10-12 new players. This is fake news.

McKenna turning up the heat on Ashton on 20:47 - Jul 27 with 12550 views | ITFCBlues | Yep! Was always likely to need a huge overhaul unfortunately with the amount that departed. The squad really is extremely thin when you look at what we fielded and the bench available today

Having to play players in strange positions. Not ideal. Wouldn't be surprised to see us cancel one of the friendlies in Germany. Have we even got 2 squads?

Think we'll be okay for the 2 games. A lot of the senior U21s were playing at Bury at the same time as the game against Fortuna today. A lot of the forward players will rotate between being starters in game and finishers in the next. Midfield looks like it could be a challenge though.

McKenna turning up the heat on Ashton on 21:03 - Jul 27 with 12261 views | Nutkins_Return | He's just being honest. We need another 4-5 at least and I think 90% of fans knew this already purely by the number that have left and who will clearly move on. It's not a huge overhaul particularly. It's 2-3 more than we would probably have done if we had stayed in the champ. We're not crazy light when come Monday Omari and Tuanzebe are also available. But we don't have huge depth to cope with any further injuries. I expect next 2 weeks we we will see 2-3 more in and then same again before window shuts. 5 more I reckon. 2-3 will still probably move on e.g. Ladapo. I think Harness and Al Hamadi will stay now and review again in Jan. Interestingly Edmundson looks in with a shout of moving ahead of Woolf. Too early to say but interesting he's being selected as a partner for Greaves. I think he better athleticism is potentially seen as required for prem. Axel could have a say as well.

Well, from what I've been told by someone who should know, KMac wants another 7-8 minimum inclusive of loans.

More interesting what his talk of taylor I said I felt he would be sold. And KM saying they're having a look at him through pre season in different roles just doesn't sound like he's been the player KM felt he was getting. I don't think Taylor will work as anything other than a middle attacking midfielder. So if that's the case. Then we definitely need 2 new cms as we've lost two at the end of the season and now can exclude taylor. So 2 cms 1 left 10 1 left back 1 rcb 1 striker 1 rw 1 gk

McKenna turning up the heat on Ashton on 21:21 - Jul 27 with 12033 views | LankHenners | Good to see pushback from the manager on the strange ideas people have that we don't need to add much more and we don't need to add Premier League experience. Obviously we wouldn't do things like put Harness at RAM or play Ayinde/Barbrook at all unless absolutely necessary but if nothing else today reiterated the point that a couple of injuries in the same area of the pitch has us looking a little thin. Whether he was reminding Ashton there are important things to get on with that aren't giving himself a pat on the back about how his various construction projects are coming on or not I'm not sure, but a little public comment from the main man certainly gets everyone on the same page.

McKenna turning up the heat on Ashton on 21:37 - Jul 27 with 11786 views | Illinoisblue | Think that’s a little sensationalist. Nothing to suggest KM and Ashton aren’t fully aligned. They both know we need extra quality. But as we’ve seen with the Smozdics saga, it’s not always easy to get deals done. Broadhead’s being out until probably November is a big blow. Add in a few extra niggles and it highlights the thinness of the squad.

I think 7 or 8 is not far wrong. When you are turning down possibliities such as Sarmiento and Moore, that means you're expecting to sign better players than them rather than settling for Harness and Ladapo.

It certainly wasn’t a standard set of comments, either he is slightly panicked or giving someone a nudge.

I’d say we are set like this GK - Muric +2 DR - Johnson, Clarke DL - Davis +1 DC - Woolfenden, Greaves, Tuanzebe, Edmundson, Burgess MC - Morsy, Luongo +2 AM - Taylor RW - Burns +1 R10 - Hutchinson, Chaplin L10 - Broadhead +1 Utility forward - +1 ST - Hirst, Delap +1 So +9 required - but some of those will be filled by Walton, Slicker, Harness, Ali, etc.

Yep, I think that's bang on. A lot to do in a few weeks. As another poster has said, McKenna's comments post-match were purposely more candid than usual. I don't think it's sensationalist to suggest he's anxious to build and work with the majority of his PL squad for the season rather than the likes of Ladapo and Harness. I just read it as him stating reality: “We’re working really hard, we know we need to make a lot more additions to have a squad that’s strong enough to be competitive in Premier League games.”

Made a big point about how big the gap was between leagues. Big point about 2 players for every position etc Very direct points imo.

I literally heard nothing we haven’t heard before. He’s many times talked about having two players for every position. We’ll get some deals done, miss out on a few and on we go.

Yeah, any saying that McKenna is going for Ashton in that interview is looking for too hard into it.

I don’t see anything more in it than that. It’s pretty obvious to all we are short on players of the right standard, not helped by players missing or held back through injury or other reasons. The club is clearly working hard in every area to get itself ready for three weeks time. We feel a long way off all aspects at the moment, but we’ll get there.

Indeed. McKenna said exactly the same this time last year. Ashton said himself there’s more to come, they’re always on the same wavelength.

That would be about where I am I think. LB as cover for Leif, RB or RCB (if I'm being brutally honest I'd like an upgrade on Woolfenden and a specialist RB leaving Johnson as a versatile squad player), 2 in CM (1 definite starter), LW (or left sided 10 which I assume will be Szmodics), starting striker to complete with Hirst. Maybe a keeper if Walton wants to go. Any less than that and we will have a very long season.

You're reading too much into someone stating the obvious facts. I hope KM and MA arent panicking as much as you.

McKenna turning up the heat on Ashton on 01:51 - Jul 28 with 9744 views | Europablue | It's just KM stating what is clear to everyone. I don't think MA needs any more motivation or pushing to get the players in. It just takes time. A manager signaling the CEO or owner in a press conference is a sign of an unhealthy relationship. I am sure KM is very upfront with MA and KM is just keeping the fans informed. The recruitment has gone well so far. Hopefully there is another flurry of activity again soon.
