I got the impression from Kieran's post match comments that he was giving Ashton a little nudge to focus minds on strengthening the squad.
As well as Harness did, to have him, Ladapo, Barbrook etc. involved underlines how thin we are. The squad did need major surgery to compete next season, no matter how attached we are to the Class of 2023-24. |  | | |  |

I think 7 or 8 is not far wrong. When you are turning down possibliities such as Sarmiento and Moore, that means you're expecting to sign better players than them rather than settling for Harness and Ladapo. |
It isn't clear that we have turned down Sarmiento. Maybe he's only available on loan, and we'd rather see who we can get in on a permanent before we commit to the short term option of a loan. | | | |

I was thinking 4-6. It’s a tough job recruiting the right talent for that many changes. Harness was a real bright spot as was Morsy. At this stage it can’t be helped that we were missing

Yep, I think that's bang on. A lot to do in a few weeks.
As another poster has said, McKenna's comments post-match were purposely more candid than usual. I don't think it's sensationalist to suggest he's anxious to build and work with the majority of his PL squad for the season rather than the likes of Ladapo and Harness. [Post edited 27 Jul 2024 22:05]

When I looked at the bench yesterday, I thought 'bloody hell'. A bit of a reminder how well we did with injuries last season bar that little spell between Christmas and New Year.
We really need a top level CM. And as I've been banging on about for weeks, the way we play with starters and finishers, you need 9/10 interchangeable options for that front 4 without a noticeable drop off in quality. | | | |

Other teams are playing hardball to prise their best players away if if they are unproven at Premier level. The funds available won't be limitless from the financial side or from the fair play rules side. It was previously hinted that we would spend around 100 million, so we are over half way there with five players, although one of those was a free. So we ain't getting another seven in for 45 million. Maybe two purchases a three loans I'd say. | | | |

Isn't this whole thread a bit captain obvious?
I mean we are down 10-ish players from last season and have so far replaced them with 5. So we are 5 players down and have 4-5 injured/coming back from injury.
We are effectively about 10 players short in the squad at the moment.
When at full strength, Harness played 30 minutes out of the last 10 games last season. He'd be an excellent 24/5th member of the squad but i'd only start to wibble if he was anywhere near the starting line up come the first game of the season. | | | |

So that’s your impression too. Do you think they are not working hard on getting in who they want /need? Do you think Ashton is wasting his time on infrastructure when he should be concentrating on players and this was McKenna’s kick up the @rse? I didn’t hear or read it that way.
Personally, I think they are clear on what they want and are striving for that in a very different place from L1 or Championship. Everyone is looking to offload the garbage and bring in the good people. It’s tough. Is the club concerned about over paying? I hope so.
There is as you point out three weeks to kick off. A long time. There will be an opportunity for a loan or two as well. Would we be relegated with yesterday’s team and fitness level? Of course. But it won’t be that team and there will be three weeks going into them so there’s no need to panic.

I think my biggest concern is Tuanzebe injury history.
Edmundson likely to be the one, but in my opinion Woolfenden will struggle with the pace of the PL.
