McKenna turning up the heat on Ashton 20:40 - Jul 27 with 21919 views | portmanking | I got the impression from Kieran's post match comments that he was giving Ashton a little nudge to focus minds on strengthening the squad. As well as Harness did, to have him, Ladapo, Barbrook etc. involved underlines how thin we are. The squad did need major surgery to compete next season, no matter how attached we are to the Class of 2023-24.

McKenna turning up the heat on Ashton on 21:43 - Jul 27 by Trequartista | I think 7 or 8 is not far wrong. When you are turning down possibliities such as Sarmiento and Moore, that means you're expecting to sign better players than them rather than settling for Harness and Ladapo. |
It isn't clear that we have turned down Sarmiento. Maybe he's only available on loan, and we'd rather see who we can get in on a permanent before we commit to the short term option of a loan.
McKenna turning up the heat on Ashton on 07:22 - Jul 28 with 3684 views | PioneerBlue | I was thinking 4-6. It’s a tough job recruiting the right talent for that many changes. Harness was a real bright spot as was Morsy. At this stage it can’t be helped that we were missing Tuanzebe Clarke There isn’t the depth in CMf There is no natural cover for Leif Omari Broadhead AAH Means we patched together with starters and finished some not even in a position we’d pick them for in L1. Much still to do as KMck outlines on and off pitch but it will all come together it always does. With a high level of new players let’s hope that doesn’t mean taking overly long to get into the season, there aren’t the games to get up to speed slowly.

McKenna turning up the heat on Ashton on 22:04 - Jul 27 by portmanking | Yep, I think that's bang on. A lot to do in a few weeks. As another poster has said, McKenna's comments post-match were purposely more candid than usual. I don't think it's sensationalist to suggest he's anxious to build and work with the majority of his PL squad for the season rather than the likes of Ladapo and Harness. When I looked at the bench yesterday, I thought 'bloody hell'. A bit of a reminder how well we did with injuries last season bar that little spell between Christmas and New Year. We really need a top level CM. And as I've been banging on about for weeks, the way we play with starters and finishers, you need 9/10 interchangeable options for that front 4 without a noticeable drop off in quality.

McKenna turning up the heat on Ashton on 00:30 - Jul 28 by Marshalls_Mullet | You're reading too much into someone stating the obvious facts. I hope KM and MA arent panicking as much as you. |
Not sure why I'm your pick In this thread when I'm just agreeing with the OP. And how do you KM isn't panicking. He might not be. But on the other hand he turned down Brighton to stay and at present has a squad that has 0 chance of staying up or even getting close to it with the season 3 weeks away and the window 6 weeks from closing.

McKenna turning up the heat on Ashton on 08:55 - Jul 28 with 3518 views | OldFart71 | It's all very well people saying we need another 5,6, 7 players in, but you only have to look at the difficulty we are having signing one or two. Other teams are playing hardball to prise their best players away if if they are unproven at Premier level. The funds available won't be limitless from the financial side or from the fair play rules side. It was previously hinted that we would spend around 100 million, so we are over half way there with five players, although one of those was a free. So we ain't getting another seven in for 45 million. Maybe two purchases a three loans I'd say.
McKenna turning up the heat on Ashton on 08:57 - Jul 28 with 3502 views | The_Flashing_Smile | If you watch what he said rather than read the text it doesn't come across like that at all. As others have said, it's fairly standard pre-season chat stating facts. And I'm pretty sure Ashton doesn't need his mind focusing.

Depends if we can find some gems from the foreign market, where we don't have to pay the English premium. We do need 7 or 8 to be competitive, whether the funds allow for that is a different question.

McKenna turning up the heat on Ashton on 20:50 - Jul 27 by FrimleyBlue | He can't be happy with how it's going. Having to change the set ups of the friendlies. Having to play players in strange positions. Not ideal. Wouldn't be surprised to see us cancel one of the friendlies in Germany. Have we even got 2 squads? |
I’m sure he’s happy. Just wants more signings. We all know that. Talks of cancelling the friendlies is ridiculous. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

McKenna turning up the heat on Ashton on 14:22 - Jul 28 with 3041 views | itfcsuth | KMc knows exactly what we require. I suspect he’s well aware we don’t have the quality quite yet that we will need. RCB concerns me, LB cover required, 2 CDM, LM, and we need a real proven striker. That makes it 6 new signings needed at a minimum for me.

McKenna turning up the heat on Ashton on 14:44 - Jul 28 with 2963 views | burnbudgiesburn | Isn't this whole thread a bit captain obvious? I mean we are down 10-ish players from last season and have so far replaced them with 5. So we are 5 players down and have 4-5 injured/coming back from injury. We are effectively about 10 players short in the squad at the moment. When at full strength, Harness played 30 minutes out of the last 10 games last season. He'd be an excellent 24/5th member of the squad but i'd only start to wibble if he was anywhere near the starting line up come the first game of the season.

Didn't say cancelling both friendlies. I said cancelling one which wouldn't surprise me and might be welcome if he doesn't have the squad to fulfil two games. If we did no biggy if we don't no biggy either. But it's not ridiculous if there isn't enough players to fulfil it.

My source told me 12 was the number this summer so all adds up. How were going to do it though I don't know. Heard of lots of irons in the fire though.

The OP said ‘I got the impression from Kieran's post match comments that he was giving Ashton a little nudge to focus minds on strengthening the squad.’ So that’s your impression too. Do you think they are not working hard on getting in who they want /need? Do you think Ashton is wasting his time on infrastructure when he should be concentrating on players and this was McKenna’s kick up the @rse? I didn’t hear or read it that way. Personally, I think they are clear on what they want and are striving for that in a very different place from L1 or Championship. Everyone is looking to offload the garbage and bring in the good people. It’s tough. Is the club concerned about over paying? I hope so. There is as you point out three weeks to kick off. A long time. There will be an opportunity for a loan or two as well. Would we be relegated with yesterday’s team and fitness level? Of course. But it won’t be that team and there will be three weeks going into them so there’s no need to panic. They’re obviously doing their best in all aspects and that’s enough.

I think my biggest concern is Tuanzebe injury history. Edmundson likely to be the one, but in my opinion Woolfenden will struggle with the pace of the PL. I think he lacks pace, and fear he may get caught in possession a little more.

You can’t buy 10 or 12 players, without releasing a load or sending lots out on loan. Get over it fella. We’re three weeks out. You’re wrong.
