Davis/Phillips 23:09 - Nov 15 with 4685 views | Zx1988 | Assuming Leif continues on his current trajectory, and Phillips keeps on improving and gets back to his best, who would get the England call-up first? I'd like to think Leif, but would Phillips' prior history give him the upper hand in terms of a return to the squad?

I think he has, yes. He seems to have been one of those that it's fashionable to knock, but he was vastly improved in his last couple of games, right up until the second yellow against Leicester.

Marginally he has. It feels like it takes time for him to get into games but when he does you can see what he is about. For the 11 matches to date do I think he’s offered enough overall, given what he was brought in to do? No. But he is in a new environment having had a poor season or two and I think there is a lot more to come as the season progresses, assuming he is played and is settled. Davis? I think he is improving at this level all the time. He will play for his country before Phillips gets his England place back in my view.

Completely right about the fashionable to knock bit. Ridiculous stuff gets said on Philips. Think he'll start against Utd.

Really can't see it happening again for Phillips based on what we've seen so far - we looked way better without him in the team, and we're relegation contenders!

You'd put him in ahead of Cajuste or Morsy?
Davis/Phillips on 07:45 - Nov 16 with 3539 views | MK1 | Both have a long way to go before they can start thinking about International football. I would say Davis first, but only because I don't think Phillips will play for England again.

Davis/Phillips on 08:11 - Nov 16 with 3410 views | HighgateBlue | Plainly if Phillips gets back to his best, he has to be favourite. He was in the England side, and won England player of the year. Davis has never been called up, and has only a dozen or so Premier League appearances. But it's not a premise which is very likely. Even if Phillips does improve, I personally can't see it as likely that he hits his previous heights. Furthermore, his position is better catered for for England. Davis meanwhile is still youngish (although not as young maybe as one assumes), has been improving since day 1 under KMac, has been catching the eye for the right reasons, stays on the pitch, and is working and improving at the defensive side of his game (which is not naturally his standout strength). If we stay up, Davis gets a call up next year. If we don't, he will have big club suitors. If Phillips leaves, I think there's a real question as to where he goes. Decent club at a slightly second rate European league? Mid table Premier League at best? So on what I see as the likely trajectories, Davis is the more likely call up in the near future.

Given what he was brought here to do. No. ??? He was brought here so KM could try and bring the best out of a player that has had a very rough time over the past 18 months. Abused by the media, not allowed to play games without being targeted as the cause of a non win. There was 0 expectation on what Phillips was going to bring, it was always what could we extract and we are beginning to see that talent. Some of his recent passing up until his suspension has been a joy to watch and very much phillips of old as was his tenacious horrid little dm self. Is he 100% there yet no where near. But he's not been any worse than Morsy who seems to get plaudits just for walking out the tunnel. I'm really excited to see how Phillips looks in another 2 months time. We've seen the progress of everyone else it's quite exciting to think what KM can get from Phillips.

Phillips starts every game. He’s been excellent in his last few games and is showing signs of getting back to where he once was. More time on the trading ground with KM and the team and we’ll reap the benefits. Cajuste or Morsy? Tough. I said before he joined Cajuste will be one of the stand out signings. We’ve got a nice balance in that 5 now. Great to see such good competition. I’d it the strongest centre midfield selections we’ve ever had? All internationals or former internationals? Davis/Phillips on 09:15 - Nov 16 with 3058 views | BloomBlue | It will be Leif. It's doubly hard for any player who played regularly for England and then hasn't been select for (approx) two seasons to be selected again. I did find it interesting that Curtis Jones got his first cap on Thursday, even though he has represented England at every youth level and played nearly 100 games for L'pool in the PL. His form admittedly has been patchy over the seasons but does prove it is hard to breakdown barriers for some players to get an England cap.

Cajuste looks the more direct replacement for ‘the Luongo role’ of all of them, his performance at Spurs was pretty much a carbon copy of Luongo last season albeit of a higher standard. Clearly a big part of how we play with so much of his time spent in that defensive left sided pocket. Based on what I’ve seen it’s Morsy or Phillips next to him IMO.

Especially when you consider the lack of competition for the role. Kane will be 33 just after the next World Cup and didn’t look particularly mobile in the euros. Watkins is class but he’ll be 30. Toney? Also 30 and playing in a farmer league. England are blessed with a lot of quality young players but very few 9’s. Delap has a great chance to stake his claim if he keeps scoring at this level over the next 18 months.

I totally agree with this. Every time Cajuste comes on it feels like he's a better fit and we become a bit harder to beat/ pass through. He's also just a little bit more of an athlete. I think Phillips certainly has a place in the team and I'm all for giving him time to find that form. However we are a quarter of the way through the season and we can't wait forever for the Leeds version to show up. I can't see us shifting from the team that won last weekend with two top teams to play in the next few weeks. Cajuste/ Morsy to start IMO. [Post edited 16 Nov 2024 15:34]

Davis/Phillips on 21:15 - Nov 16 with 2091 views | ringwoodblue | Much as it saddens me to say it, I can’t see any Town player being called up for England any time soon - at least until we can establish ourselves in the PL. The so-called bigger club players will always be favoured even though they may not be as good as our boys.
