John Prescott RIP on 08:42 - Nov 21 with 2347 views | Churchman | John Prescott was certainly a political giant of his time. A hugely influential figure I rather liked his straightforward approach to things as I do with most Yorkshire people. The only criticism I have is that his technique with that punch wasn’t the best. It could have been delivered more effectively. I thought it was great when he did it though - nobody should put up with a toerag chucking anything at them including an egg. Reading about him, I gather he died of that cruel disease Alzheimer’s. So hard for him and his family as anyone whose seen it will tell you. The struggle is over. RIP Mr Prescott
John Prescott RIP on 08:57 - Nov 21 with 2285 views | BloomBlue | Certainly was different. Sadly probably wouldn't survive as a politician now. Rember when two Jaqs was challenged over the fact he used one to drive 200 feet from one building to another and he replied, 'it was because of security and also his wife hated the wind ruining her hair'. Just think now have he would be crucified for that, even though he was just speaking his mind. Also sadly and unfortunately his legacy was tarnished slighly when he let his loins control his brains - but that made him even more normal for many people One of the last of his kind. RIP

It’s hard to argue that Labour wouldn’t benefit from someone like him now. Rayner’s having to do a lot of heavy lifting mostly on her own. Someone with his character on the front benches probably wouldn’t hurt at all. 86 though. Wow, where does time go? [Post edited 21 Nov 2024 20:25]

That’s a lovely interview and you can tell there was genuine mutual affection, or at the very least respect. Hague nails a current problem at the end there when he talks about Prescott’s authentic character. We lack that now in many of the leading MPs. They either have no character, or aren’t authentic, or more often than not both.

John Prescott RIP on 22:53 - Nov 21 with 1415 views | Whos_blue | Sad news, especially hearing he was living with dementia. Generally hard to not like, though I think he blotted his copy book during the firefighter strikes of the early 2000s, especially the doomed "Firecontrol" project he championed that was scrapped uncompleted after £500 million. Yes. £500 million, was wasted. A terrible waste of public money. That said, he represented his Hull constituency loyally for 40 years and that is a remarkable achievement.

How exactly? He was part of a watershed government that made real social change. So much so the Tories took a slash and burn approach to it, and picked the bones clean leaving us where we are now. What did they do so right, that Labour got so wrong in Prescotts time?

There’s a lot of this around. Quick statements saying Labour are always worse at x or y and they always ruin everything. Nothing to qualify the statements of course. I thinks it simply an evidence free belief system. They’ve had 13 years in power out of the last 45 and been out of power for the last 13, yet everything is supposed to be their fault. There’s stuff they get wrong of course, as every government does. But this one-eyed smearing of them does bear up to scrutiny at all imo.
