Great defensively but absolutely no belief when going forward 22:16 - Dec 27 with 3177 views | melbs_itfc | Credit where credit is due, we looked fairly solid but so frustrating when going forward, We just looked like we were too scared to take a shot or cross the ball into the box, so holding onto the ball too long and the opportunity was lost. The smozedics chance when he didn’t take the opportunity to shoot when Raya was out of goal was a classic example. For me that’s a lack of belief.

Makea a huge difference when you know opponents are as quick as you and also 4 inches taller and 20% more powerful. You cant hold the ball or be as composed.

That’s the frustrating part for me too. We did absolutely brilliantly to stay in the game for as long as we did but on the rare occasion we got near their box, we didn’t even seem like we had the confidence to cross it in the box or have an attempt at goal. All it takes is a lucky defection and we come away with a point. But we were far too timid unfortunately. Hopefully, this defensive performance will regain some confidence again moving forward after the difficult experience against Newcastle.

Thought Arsenal were more physically similar. Just much, much better footballers. If they had a striker and some intent, they'd be a real force.

A bit like saying, if we were an established Premier League side and had spent 400 million on players, we would be a better side.

It's a bit more nuanced than that. Newcastle and Forest were bigger than us and better than us. Whereas Arsenal were similar size man for man but just different gravy. Cajuste for me was the only player we had who looked suitable for the occasion in terms of quality.

Newcastle were bigger and better than us, but same applies regarding money spent, they brought on a 40 million sub in Barnes and established England international in Trippier. Notts Forest were no better, but much bigger and shaded a game that could have gone either way.

Great defensively but absolutely no belief when going forward on 07:20 - Dec 28 with 2183 views | PioneerBlue | I’m sure we all know the structural theory is that we’d rather pin a team high up in their defensive third than be battling to keep it out of ours. However where we had attacking purpose and momentum last season we’ve not been able to creat much at all of this as a team this. Our lack of goals scored is currently the big issue, conceding 1 or losing by the odd goal is one thing but if you can’t score two or three it will always be harder with a team not designed to battle for everything like Everton, Palace or even Forest from what we saw.

Great defensively but absolutely no belief when going forward on 07:44 - Dec 28 with 2144 views | Dubtractor | I was going to make a similar post this morning, but will piggy back here instead. Defensively I thought we were exceptional, across the whole team, barely gave up a half chance all night, but got punished for one lapse. I'm genuinely proud of how we defended as a team, and if we're honest, there probably isn't a poster on here who wouldn't have taken a 1-0 defeat before the game. But....... I've rarely seen a more toothless Ipswich Town team than that one. To play the 'low block' effectively, you need the attacking moments to be executed almost perfectly as they are few and far between, but our front 3 all had games well below what they are capable of, with all 3 giving the ball away cheaply far too often. And as per the OP we seemed oddly reluctant to take a chance on anything when we did get close to the box, which ultimately meant that we simply didn't ask any questions of Arsenal all game. Worth noting that Delap and Omari are still very young, and it's a tough ask for them to play that kind of game. Obviously easier to come on against tired legs and impress, but it was really noticeable how much slicker we looked when Broadhead came on. That's a few impressive cameos from him now, and I wonder if we'll start to see more of him instead of the frankly very underwhelming Clarke in the coming weeks. So overall I feel fairly proud that we can dig in and make things tough for the very best teams, but unsure on how we can add a bit of attacking threat to that when needed in future matches. Agree with all that. Most (non-ITFC) criticism I've seen is that at 1-0 down we looked like we were playing out a 0-0. The last 10 minutes were painfully toothless. Giving away stupid fouls, endless passing it sideways and backwards (particularly in added time) waiting for the perfect central opening against Arsenal's amazing defence.

Absolutely agree, and I think that what’s contributing to our frustrations in the final third is that historically over the last two seasons that has clearly been one of our strengths, notably being top goal scorers in each of them. I know there is a massive difference coming up to the premier league but I am not sure most of us were expecting quite such a drastic drop off In goal threat. I think it was actually the defence which was much more of a concern imo, where surprisingly it is in this area we have generally done fairly ok in most games in that regard. If we are going to give ourselves a fighting chance to stay up, it is imperative that we improve massively in our goal threat over the remainder of the season, and that is why quite obviously our success in the January transfer window is going to be crucial. I for one trust Ashton, McKenna et al to deliver.

Agreed. I think we’re suffering from not having more experience up the top of the pitch, but then having said that Szmodics is plenty experienced enough, so maybe it’s just down to quality with Delap and Omari still work in progress. Don’t know. We got up the pitch in numbers, so it’s not from lack of support. It could just be teams are so well organised now. It’s very different in that respect to when we were last in this league. Every team is so well-drilled defensively, even the worse ones are miles better than Champ teams.

Disagree. Thought Greaves was awesome. He has during his short time at Town on occasions been turned or made a bad pass leading to the opposition scoring. But like so many in the team it's been a huge learning curve. Some are improving and some sadly aren't. But when you compare the money paid for players against the likes of Man Utd then we ain't doing too badly. No we aren't where we would like to be, but neither are the other promoted clubs and City, Utd, West Ham and Everton.

It was a a lack of confidence and decisiveness as much as ability I think on Friday, Omari and Davis both hesitated to cross when well placed on more than one occasion. Watching the highlights and Leif's cross in the first minute was hit nice and early.

It's not just about height. It's an athleticism and upper body strength. Hard to explain in some ways but when you see it, you see it. Even someone like Anthony Gordon who I'd always thought was a bit lightweight is a bit of a specimen when you watch him live. Morsy is probably a perfect example for us, to look at not physically imposing but he is so good at using his body and has that upper body strength (maybe not the athleticism though). Burns had it in the league below but doesn't seem to have it at this level. Omari has the athleticism but is too lightweight for me. Delap obviously has it. But we are lacking in that department. That game against Newcastle with Szmodics, Chaplin and Hutchinson, we had no hope.

This is what some are forgetting. It will take time and 3 transfer windows to get a starting X1 that can challenge the top 8. 10+ of our players were here in L1, so totally unrealistic for us to expect them to be as good as players who have been at the highest level for considerably longer. I think we all have to expect us to struggle for the remaining games of this season and with luck, we survive and build a bit more. As frustrating as it is, time and patience is required. That is the harsh reality.
