Cajuste (sorry, another thread) 08:48 - Jul 15 with 2640 viewstractorboy1978

All gone very quiet. The longer he doesn't sign somewhere else, the more likely we are to get him you would think? If Burnley or Palace really wanted him you would think that deal would already be done, so I wouldn't think he is an 'A' target in CM for either.

The fact we *could* possibly get Matusiwa, Ruiz and Cajuste for a combined £22m-£23m feels like the best potential business in the club's history IMO.

And to think people wanted us to push for Downes at £18m on his own!

We've moved on to Abel Ruiz now. Jens who?

If Morsy is off we are going to want 3 aren't we?

EDIT - And Taylor perhaps?

I see it the other way personally. If he wanted to come back he’d be here already. His eyes are elsewhere in my view

This whole saga has soured the idea of getting him back. If he signed for us now, we would be his last option and I don't really want a player who's not fully invested. Ruiz looks a cut above in any case.

Agreed.

Phillips, Cajuste, Luongo, and seemingly Morsy, out.

Matusiwa and maybe Humphreys in.

= 2 extra new faces to restock the middle, minimum (to increase if Taylor or Humphreys leave, though I see Taylor at least staying for rotation and as a regular sub).

Any player that signs is fully invested once they sign. It's common knowledge Morsy didn't want to be signing here initially but I don't think anyone can argue with his commitment! It is unrealistic to expect a player that is above our current level to be crawling over hot coals to sign when he has interest from higher up the chain.

Dara O'Shea would more than happily have joined other clubs before us but presumably you'll be fine with him skippering us this season?

Surely it'll be either Cajuste or Ruiz (assuming either deal is viable) rather than both? We're in the Championship and players of that calibre are going to want to be guaranteed starters this season.

The thing is we'd need two very good players for that left side. I'm feeling very cautious re Ruiz because we are quite possibly a stalking horse for other suitors – but it's worth considering that the boy has not had a break since December and our supporters would be expecting him to come in and boss a full Championship season. Not gonna happen, he'd need immense care and meticulously managed minutes. He's already played 43 times this calendar year!

Agreed. And can Cajuste handle the rigours of a 46 game Championship season? You'd think his knee is going to need to be managed.

I've never understood this attitude.

If you were him, you'd be silly not to look at options available to you and consider those before making a decision.

The fact we might be his second choice doesn't mean he won't give his all with us.

Remember, we were second choice last season for him. Brentford opted against him after his medical.

I don’t think we would pay anything like £18m for Downes but he is a proven championship player, unlike Matusiwa or Ruiz and would be a very good buy imho

From what I gathered last week, options were being assessed with Burnley the most attractive at that point. Besiktas still on the table but looking less likely, Palace not keen, Ipswich not looking an option. I think we've been aware that's the case for a while, although open to talks if nothing gets sorted elsewhere.

Which makes it all the more concerning to me that Morsy - albeit no more than internet rumours at the moment - is heading out the door. The absolute perfect foil/leader to have in the squad whilst we was to bed both Matusiwa and Ruiz (if it comes off) in.

I appreciate the chance of a longer term deal at his age will be what sways any decision, but just feel he still has so much to offer us going in to next season.

This makes no sense. We aren't Real Madrid - there probably isn't a player in the world where we are their first choice. If we want the best possible players then this is the game we have to play unfortunately.

Doesn't look like we'd be his second choice though, which would be fair enough. Judging by all the interest throughout Europe and the PL we would be his last choice.

Believe our CM targets are based in the UK.

Harrison Reed, Downes, and Hackney are all players I've heard concrete links too - although not for a while, and I don't believe Downes being at the training ground was true.

So?

He's a professional athlete. Even if we are his last choice (out of clubs that are all higher than us in their leagues, so understandable) it doesn't mean he wouldn't want to be here and that he wouldn't perform

I really don't get this attitude. So many people are refusing to give Philogene a chance, because a) his agent did his job (as annoying as that was for us) and b) Jaden wanted to carefully consider his options.

We have NO idea of the things Cajuste has to personally consider, and if he signs he will do it because he believes it's right for him, and we should then get right behind him.

I think it's unlikely he will sign now, but if he does he'll have me 100% behind him, as every proper fan should too,

Couldn't give a toss about Cajuste. Heard so many comments about how our midfield failed us last season ... and it was pretty much down to Morsy. Yet, Cajuste doesn't just get a free pass... his stock has risen. One goal ( admittedly a wonder goal) and some classy cameos. We need more than a show-pony in the Championship.
If Morsy has been written off by many because we were constantly out-played in midfield... why does this guy never take any flak?

Playing a whole season in a low block at Burnley could be very painful - he'd be hammering on our door come January!

Fair enough, agree to disagree. If he was to sign I would of course back him like any signing.
