Thought he looked good.
I don't get the hate from some. He looks a battler, has some pace, gets in good positions, forward and back, keeps it pretty simple. Very solid. Yes he's not omari, but I don't think he needs to be.
I think a lot of it is the price tag, which is completely irrelevant now. He's in, he's capable, let him get on with it and judge him on his play for the team. |  | | |  |

Personally I think he needs to show he can run with the ball, being more direct/aggressive. Didn’t see much of that from him lastnight.
He also cocked up a great chance to get in an early ball to Hirst, who had made a brilliant run across his man to the front post.
There doesn’t have to be one, but I’d say he was the least impressive player for us in that game. |  |

It’s early days. But I haven’t seen what you see. Hurst made a fantastic run first half and McAteer never looked like he was going to play him in. Fouls a lot. But fingers crossed he proves me wrong. He’s one of us so gets my support [Post edited 13 Sep 7:17]

Agree with you. He’s not a flash player. Does the basics ok, steady, reliable. Easy to miss what he does in a match. Classic ‘water carrier’ type of player that all teams need. Bet his team mates appreciate him. Depressing to say this but will probably be the scapegoat in the squad that some of the haters seem to need to have |  |

You can see why McKenna likes him for that RW spot. Works hard and has a bit about him. A positive feel. Needs work on the attacking side of things as a few times was caught out trying to make the run then left us exposed albeit he worked hard to get back behind the ball. I guess KM feels he can improve that side of things given his age. The issue is the pricetag and the expectation that brings. He’ll be fine. Loved the look of Egeli when he started to settle. Lots of excellent performances last night, but didn’t think he was one of them to be honest. Once again, thought Davis was excellent with his movement and quality of pass. Such a different type of player to Clarke and Philogene but works hard, chases back and covers the right. I think he’s almost trying too hard and so giving little fouls away but I think he’s got huge potential and will only get better. He was playing in front of his 3rd different right back this season which will have had an impact as well. |  | | |

Don’t think he was anything spectacular, but in a way I think that suits us right now in the way of Egeli’s development. You know with McAteer you’ll get 6/7 out of 10 every week and will go under the radar with his hard work etc, which will allow Egeli 20 minutes or so each week to find his feet and then when the time is right - ala Hutchinson - Egeli will then start most weeks. |  |

Work rate is very high and underrated. Did a lot of tracking back, helping Furlong. What I like about him is he sticks to the wing, which was stretching SU.
He will need some time, as do all players, to fully understand when one of our players will run/won't run. He had a chance to play Hirst in, but conversely against Derby he played a lovely quick ball through expecting Hirst to run but Hirst didn't, and Derby immediately cleared and fans moaned. That understanding will come, same as the Burns/Hirst understanding took time. |  | | |

He’s the weak link of the front 4 no doubt, not sure what he give that Ogbene couldn’t. He barely got a kick for Ireland in the week which I think shows something.
Adding to this he put a proper hospital ball into the middle which led to our first goal, different type of deflection there and they would’ve been 2v2. [Post edited 13 Sep 9:31]

I think it is a lot tbh. But then £8m was a lot for Ogbene as well IMO, not just in hindsight but at the time. I’ve just come to the conclusion I’m a dinosaur and £10m is the new £6m. Sheff United for example spent £10m on Mark McGuinness. Decent enough defender don’t get me wrong, but £10m?
Makes me think Cov got Woolfy on the cheap, but then we’ve effectively swapped an experienced Champ defender who wanted out for an experienced Champ defender in Furlong who wanted in, so whatever.
Best thing fans can do is recognise the profile of McAteer and understand his role in the side. He’s more Milner than Salah (not saying he’s anywhere near as good) and to your point they generally don’t command that sort of premium, but he’s here now, and he’ll be an important cog. |  | | |

Early days still, so he deserves the benefit of the doubt. He's not a Hutchinson type player or even a Philogene or Clarke player, so no real point in those comparisons; the only question I have is have we let Ogbene go on loan in order to bring in a £12m replacement who doesn't offer us anything more, & arguably gives us a little less?

I didn't think we needed him. I'm still not sure if we did. I'd have been happier keeping Ogbene and using the money on Caceres or James to boost a position where we maybe lack depth if someone goes down. He did a job yesterday, though. | |
