Its not going to change it , but I will have a wager now with anyone who wrote this rule, it will never be applied again .
| Social media literally awash with outrage at that decision on 09:56 - Aug 31 with 2949 views | LegendofthePhoenix | The rule kinda makes sense if it is accidental handball. The problem is that yesterday, that was never in a million years accidental. Hands up by his face. Accidental is when arms are tucked in hands by the side at waist height. In that instance, its not a bad rule. There is no way it would ever have been allowed at OT if that was us. They just interpret the rules they want as they want at that place. | |

That’s the key in this, VAR has been told to be light touch this season therefore once the ref deemed the ball striking the hand as accidental they were only going to ever look at whether it was an og or not. It is what it is, goal stands and we move on.

Exactly, accidental handball has been judged by the offenders hands being perceived to be in a natural position for the last few years. How is hands up in front of your body a natural position? If this decision had been at the other end we all know how it would've been reffed, and I doubt anyone would have any arguments to that!

Then the referee deserves to be sanctioned because no way is that an accidental handball.

Maybe, doesn’t change the fact the goal was given and we subsequently lost our heads for 20 mins, I doubt he will get sanctioned for his interpretation. We can all moan about the injustice but what’s the point, have to put it behind and crack on.
| Social media literally awash with outrage at that decision on 10:11 - Aug 31 with 2781 views | TownieRob | Ignore VAR for a moment. How has the Ref not blown up for handball? It was as blatant as they come. If the Ref does blow up then this ridiculous interpretation doesn't need to even come into the question. We have got to a point that Referees are no longer making decisions and are relying on VAR despite supposedly being the best we have in the country. Are we at a point where it pointless having an on-field Ref? | | | |

Let’s go back in time to the away game v Man City and recall the tale of two penalties. Now, what if an Ipswich defender had made the same motion inside the area - would Man U have been given a penalty? We all know yes. As a grassroots ref I’d have given the original handball in play - and even called it as I watched on the TV it was so obvious.

That's a sentence we'll be saying frequently this season, such is the lack of importance applied any team who is not 'top 6'. Fairness, parity and a level playing field are not on the FA / PGMOL agenda. We're simply an irritation they have to tolerate.

| Social media literally awash with outrage at that decision on 11:44 - Aug 31 with 2352 views | Trequartista | There's so much confusion over the incident. Some people are thinking because it's an own goal, Maguire is allowed to get away with a handball infringement, which isn't true. It has been called "accidental handball" but some accidental handballs are fouls (unnatural body position) and some aren't (natural body position), so the official interpretation of "accidental handball" is unhelpful. VAR can look at any incident leading up to the goal, we have no idea if it looked at the handball, or if it just waved through the referee's on field decision as not an infringement, as there is so much concentration on what happened afterwards. A confused way of looking at it. The hand and body position is really a clue as to whether it is intentional or not rather than an exception to the usual rule. The rule's massively over complicated wording and added guidance leads to that sort of confusion though. It can and should be very simple, as it was before they tried to codify every possible permutation rather than using a referee's judgment. Ball to hand or arm should be a foul, unless entirely unintentional. Part of that judgment automatically involves position of hands, whether the ball was deflected or came from a short distance etc etc. Spreading yourself to block a ball is also a good indicator that its not entirely innocent. Done. [Post edited 31 Aug 11:53]

I think it's a clear foul personally and by the current rules, but in all the confusion and chatter I cannot see if VAR has looked at it or not.

The caption on the screen whilst the VAR check was going on said "Checking for possible handball" yet it then just showed a few replays of what happened AFTER the handball itself, so as you say, not clear if they did actually look at that again.

Well quite, I acknowledge that what we see on the screen is not necessarily everything that is looked at, but I was screaming at the telly "why are they just showing this bit". I will be interested to see a transcript of the var interaction if one is released, I don't know when these things come out and how widely they become available.

I think that if the ref has told VAR he has had a clear view of the incident and he thinks it is accidental handball, that is a subjective opinion that VAR would not overturn. They will rely on the judgement call of the ref. I suspect they might have quickly double checked the law amongst themselves as it is a very rare occurence.

the whole problem is the endless re-refereeing of games with VAr. If the ref had simply decided it wasn't a handball (wrongly IMO) we'd have been a bit annoyed but accepted it. with VAR - supposed to cut obvious errors out - we are naturally far more frustrated & annoyed.
