Championship Duo Eyeing Town Pair
Tuesday, 3rd Dec 2019 11:20

TWTD understands Fulham have been keeping close tabs on Blues midfielder Flynn Downes in the opening months of the season, while QPR have watched central defender Luke Woolfenden.

Downes, 20, has made a hugely impressive start to the campaign and it is little surprise that clubs from higher divisions are starting to take notice.

Ex-Town midfielder Brian Talbot, Fulham’s assistant director of football operations and chief scout, was at Portman Road for the recent FA Cup tie against Lincoln as the Championship’s third-placed side continue to monitor the former academy youngster, who became the club’s youngest-ever skipper in Sunday's 1-1 FA Cup draw with Coventry.

Brentwood-born Downes, who has been widely tipped for a Premier League future, is contracted to the Blues until 2022 with the club having an option for a further season.

Town would almost certainly look to resist any firm interest in the England U20 international at this stage of his career and given his importance to the Blues’ promotion aspirations.

Woolfenden, 21, has made a similarly eye-catching beginning to his first full senior season for Town having spent last term on loan in League Two with Swindon.

Again, Town would be far from keen to let the former East Bergholt High School pupil, who is also contracted until June 2022 with the club having an option for an additional year, to depart this season.

If these 2 players left Town I would cry into a pillow for a very very long time.

Nothing to see here, if they actually make an approach the asking price will be more than anyone is prepared to pay at this stage. It'll be a few years yet before we have to let these two go.

And this is why we MUST get promoted this season.

Bristol City have watched Luke Woolfenden. I know as I sat next to their scout at Accrington

QPR again?...what player of ours would want to go to that club? as mentioned can't see neither of them going anywhere soon.

Possibly only paper talk but these two players are the backbone of this team.Any thought of selling them would be ridiculous.I doubt this will never happen so I'm not worried at all. Roll on Saturday and let's get back to league games.

Going up is an absolute must or we will lose these 2 players for a knockdown price in the summer.

Promotion is so key to keeping these lads.

Things started heading seriously south in the Championship when we sold our best players (and didn't renew Didzy's contract). We'd be mad to sell these two this season. They're crucial for our return to the Championship and if we've got any sort of ambition, we should be holding onto them while we're there. Otherwise we'll be heading back down to League One again.

Well, if there's one thing we know, it's that Lambo isn't a mug.

He won't be bullied by other clubs, and he'll be honest with Evans about what he's trying to achieve and how he can be helped, and what will mean he's hindered.

So, interest is one thing, but with Lambo in charge we can rest assured that nothing silly will happen.

I think both Woolfenden and Downes can make it at the top level. When they leave it should only be to Premier League clubs for massive transfer fees. If we sell to Championship clubs they will simply sell them on later and pocket a huge profit for themselves. Take Adam Webster, we reportedly sold him for £3.5M and then Bristol City sold him on for a reported 20m a year later!

Nothing to see here. QPR and Fulham are stupid little clubs with nothing to offer. We are a far bigger club than both of them. Move on.

Can't see either playing going anywhere in January unless we receive silly double digit million offers. As has been said though, failure to get promoted would most likely see them both at pastures new next season.

Wirralblue, itfcpaul. Have to say you both gave me a giggle with ur tales of sitting next to scouts at away games. Since when have scouts ever sat with the away fans at games. Think you'll find they sit in the directors box along with the clubs directors and other teams managers.

Burley, there's only one person running this club from a financial point of view and it isn't PR Paul. He's been rather grumpy of late, perhaps the writing is on the wall already.

If we are promoted they will both prefer to play in the Championship with us next year than these clubs - but if not ... oh dear! They wont go in Jan for the sake of only half a season in the higher league - and we wont sell them then anyway ... but they wont stay after the end of this season if all stays the same

Well Mr. Evans, I don't know how much of this is true or whether any offer will come in, but if it is true, you can continue to build on the feel good factor that is around Portman Road at the moment, or you toss it all away. The choice is yours!
