I'll be disappointed to lose Knudsen and Garner today 08:14 - Aug 9 with 4169 viewsSteve_M

We've changed an awful lot this Summer, some by design and some by circumstance in our willingness to accept the offers for Webster and Waghorn. I'm concerned that we lack both Championship experience and players with any existing relationship with ITFC. Last time we had such a big disjoint in continuity was the Summer of 2009.

It helps, of course, that in Bart, Chambers and Skuse we have three key players who are highly professional and are likely to be the spine of the team but it would be good to keep Jonas and Garner around for longer. It's not that either is irreplaceable, they clearly are but do that in six months or a year's time.

The change was required and new signings are nice enough, and I'm looking forward to seeing how they develop here, but not everything about the first team squad needed to leave with Mick and Terry.

Two very different equations to me.

Knudsen I'd definitely keep. If we only get a million for him we won't replace him properly in time and he's solid enough.

Garner isn't first choice and we could get Windass or a loan replacement and I don't think he really suits Hurst. Nowhere near mobile enough.

Especially Knudsen, regarding the connection with the club. I fear the pull,of cash against him maybe not signing anew contract may be too much to stop us cashing in

Edit - of course it doesn’t end today, either could still go to a Championship club as an initial loan until the end of August

I would like to keep Knudsen and give him a new contract. Not sure that Garner will feature much in the team with PH in charge so a swap for Windass has some merit.

It’s a difficult one isn’t it if we get good money for players who are either not going to first choice (Garner) or in the last year of contract (Jonas), which further allows Hurst to buy his own players.

I understand what you are saying, but do believe there remains a spine of continuity there with Bart, Chambo and Skuse. In addition there are a number of youger players still around plus of course whilst not having featured recently the likes of Gerken and Huws

It's a concern Steve - I posted before the match on Saturday about the fact I had a slight niggle and concern about qual over quan in regards to our signings.

That's not saying that the lads coming up from League 1 or 2 can't or won't be good enough but it's a concern.

You raise a similar note of caution in your OP.

If I'm playing devils advocate I think you can add Huws and Adeyemi to our experienced ranks and to a degree Ward as well. However, we know the issues with the first two in terms of availability.

I would have liked to have seen us sign at least one player with experience at this level but it is what it is - we are going to need patience and then some I think - this could take while to all come together.

I'd be pretty gutted to lose Knudsen, he's improved year on year for us and is a good left back at this level. Garner I'm more on the fence, he'll get some goals and is a good back up option (I can't see him being first choice). On the other hand he's 30 and may not fit Hurst's way of playing. It's a tough one, my main worry is the scale of change we're going through very quickly so on that basis I'd maybe keep him. I think if Windass is lined up he's not a direct replacement and we're left with a number of forwards who can play across the line but very few options as a lone striker.

Well said Steve. I don't want either of them to leave either.

I am a little concerned that with so many new players arriving that there won't be enough 'old hands' to continue the great togetherness thay the players seem to have with each other as a group.

Too many changes isn't always good and, with the injured players returning soon, hopefully all will be given a chance to prove themselves along with the academy players being able to step up.

It will be an interesting few months coming up.

It's goals though, we had a whole season without enough of them before signing Garner and Waghorn. They weren't the whole reason that the first half of last season was better than the entirety of the one before but they helped.

Sticking Garner on late in a game to finish off moves created by our fast attacking players looks a viable option of turning defeats into draws and draws into wins to me.

As much as Garner frustrates me (see my many posts about him spending more time on the ground than on his feet).

I'd agree with that Steve - he's a good option to have - we don't have anyone like that in the squad to really annoy the f*ck out of defenders and cause problems.

I think you have 2 separate points here. I agree with you that we may find ourselves a little short on championship nouse on occasions over the season. We have a mix of young inexperienced players and fresh lower league rising stars. Teams like Blackburn will find a way to exploit this as we have done against teams for years.

I am not sure I agree on the other point of keeping garner and Knudsen to make up for this. Garner faded badly last season and looked to burn out. He was apparently carrying injuries but he ended up a pest for us and the ref as much as the opposition. He has now missed the whole pre season and I think He is going to struggle again. I would want to keep Jonas, he is nowhere near as bad as some make out and he has been a fairly consistent figure for us at the back. I think he still has more to offer in terms of goals and his confidence seemed to be growing as he became more senior. He has to sign a contract though and i can't see him doing that. He will know he can go for a lot in a year's time, we can't afford to let him leave on a free.

I'd sell them both

I see that argument, but Waghorns out the door, and I think it comes down to how much Hurst fancies Garner. I get the feeling there's question marks over his head - he didn't get too many goals in the second half of the season, and he's been injured. If it is the case that Hurst thinks someone like Windass would fit in better I think he's got to make that call now.

Whilst I agree, losing Webster is a blow but we're not losing a huge amount of championship experience from him, more his potential, and Waghorn as great as he was last season, wasn't a prolific championship striker, last season was a minority of the majority of his career and a potential fee of £7.5m is too much to turn down.

What does concern me is the huge transition we are in, whilst it's been fantastic and exciting, we really have turned the team upside down, and that is my only concern, especially as the 3 latest players haven't had a chance to gel in pre season with their teammates and arguably will be first team players.

However, something needed to give, we were pedestrian the past few years and the whole place needed a shake up, whether that proves to be success or failure is anyone's guess, but it's what the natives wanted.

Great post Steve. Say we didnt have Garner and Jonas but say we were linked with two players exactly like them; an experienced goalscorer & aggravation specialist with a good record at this level and a solid versatile international left sided defender with a great attitude. People would say that's exactly what we need with the squad the way it is now.

The key is that Garner wants out. Was told on Saturday that Garner could have been in the squad for Blackburn but opted not to aggravate any minor issues to force through a return to the North West this week.

Not fussed about losing Garner.

Would rather not lose Knudsen without a replacement, but so be it if he goes.

We're you excited when Garner joined? Or did you think he was a poor signing like you said about Waghorn at the time?

Hmm I always take these things with a large dose of salt. Nobody held a gun to his head and made him sign his deal with us a year ago and he is very well paid.

No denying he's well paid but he's also human.

He signed to play under Mick. Mick's gone, as have many of his pals. His missus and family are all Blackburn-based and he's keen to head back there.

I am a little un-easy with all these new additions late on. Would have been good to get players in early spend pre season together working with PH and the rest of the squad. But obviously a lot of these moves hinged on the Waghorn sale.

Hopefully they can all hit the ground running though and I am excited for the season ahead!

I think they will both go, but would prefer to keep them both.

But Knudsen needs to sign a new contract and don't think we will be able to prioritise this, and Garner seems very keen to get back to NW and if we can get a decent fee agreed then no point standing in his way.

Both would add something to us though, and be difficult to replace - and is too much of an overhaul for me

I’d sell Jonas if we get a decent fee, chances are we lose him for a lot less in 6 months time.

Seems that Garner wants to go back up north, again I’d let go for a good fee if he’s unsettled.

It’s a massive overhaul though but I’d rather we do it in one window than across 3/4.
