The US was already behind on payments to the WHO and then they wonder why it was so reluctant to criticise China left as it's major funder. That's not to say that the WHO is beyond criticism, it's treatment of Taiwan - ignored despite clear lessons it could have provided to the world just to placate China - was poor.
And, as you imply, this disease is going to cause a significant number of deaths in Africa and India. Controlling it will be a global cause not one that can be achieved by a half-arsed attempt to shut borders. |  |

And that's part of the problem, the WHO criticised Trump for suspending flights from China when the WHO said there isn't a need to stop travel but then as you say the WHOs treatment of Taiwan just to keep China happy and not criticise China is totally wrong and the WHO should be called out for that.
I'm not saying the WHO shouldn't criticise but clearly they are playing politics and desperate to keep China as open and engaged with the world as they don't want another CV situation in 3 or 4 years and China hides the initial outbreak as it did this time, but the WHOs role isn't to play politics and should be neutral/consistent. If China wants to be part of the world they need to act like it.

Now you haven't got the anti-Clinton factor, there are people like the woman I was talking to in Montana who voted Trump in 2016 because they felt it would be good to have a businessman in the White House, but now think he's gone off the rails, there is a generation of younger voters coming through.
Sure, the hard-core fanatics will still go for Trump, but there aren't enough of them to win the election on their own.

It's easy to criticise the 'Democrats'but the Democratic Party members had the opportunity to vote for any number of candidates, after hearing them and their positions for the best part of a year, and all of these candidates failed to make them believe they could beat Trump, other than Biden.
The feeling among many DP members who I know right now is that this election is not the one to be fecking around with what half of the country (incorrectly) considers to be extreme left wing politics. It's too critical for the future of the country that Trump is removed from office this year. They are too scared, and it was obvious that they were always going to go with the person who is seen as the safe pair of hands (because he's a straight, white, old, man - I know I know...)
I imagine that there are many voters who will vote for Biden, who didn't vote for Clinton and sure as heck wouldn't vote for a Sanders or a Warren, and I say that as someone firmly in the Warren camp. FWIW I thought Warren was a far more viable candidate than Sanders, but you know, she's a woman so...).
Anyway, I believe that's what's what your average moderate Democrat is being motivated by. We will find out if that's true later this year. I think Biden's VP pick will be important in carrying the vote with the more leftwing members. |  |

The ‘you have to earn their vote’ line has to work both ways. You can’t say ‘well if they wanted a different nominee they should have voted for them’ then expect everyone to rally behind whoever it ends up being.
You can’t really ignore the establishment figures all getting behind Biden and pushing him to the fore after it looked like he was going to eat dust after Iowa, New Hampshire and Nevada. The Democrats saw their man in trouble and acted (with more cohesion and decisiveness than they put into winning the real deal I might add).
That’s probably true re: Clinton vs Biden but that depends on their reason for not voting for Clinton last time. If it was because of her personally then maybe they’ll vote this time but if it’s because they didn’t want an ‘establishment’ figure then that vote will be lost this time as well. Warren was a dud. She tried to position herself between Sanders and the centrist candidates and failed to appeal to either camp. She seemed like she was poorly advised - she didn’t look comfortable during the whole ‘Bernie told me a woman could never win’ thing which backfired. The Warren that took on Bloomberg at the debates was the Warren that people should have seen. Instead she faded away. Her actions (or lack of) after dropping out were pretty poor - for an alleged progressive she didn’t do much to help the cause.
The VP pick will be interesting, although whilst the ‘it’s going to be a woman’ decision went down well with a lot of liberals who’d vote blue anyway.
Their mistake last time was assuming Clinton would walk it because she was up against such an oaf. It looks worryingly like they’re going for the same tactic again but with an earlier, longer run-up with said oaf having exposed his oafishness for 4 years. As I said, it could well come down to a handful (relatively) of undecided voters choosing to go with Trump’s nationalist America first jingoism or go with the ‘safe’ choice. | |

I disagree whole hardheartedly with your assessment of Warren, but I've had it out too many times with too many real life Sanders supporters over here that I'm tired of it now. So we can agree to disagree there. Sanders would have been my number two pick anyway, so there's no point having a barney!
I think there is a huge difference between Biden and Clinton. 1) He's a white bloke and not a woman, 2) He enjoys (currently) a lot of fondness from many people who link him to those Obama years, and because of his personal story. Clinton was and is widely loathed by many, and I just don't see that being the case for Biden.
None of that obviously means he will walk it, he has a lot to do to win over the younger progressive voter, and the Republicans are going to tear him to shreds over his son and Burisma.
I know this isn't the nominee I wanted, and I find him entirely uninspiring, but removing Trump is the number one thing for me. If the Democrats were smart they will get Biden over the line, somehow flip the House, then start playing the Right at their own game.
Massive expansion of voting rights, remove the filibuster, sort out DACA, statehood for DC and Puerto Rico, strong and meaningful environmental protections, neuter the NRA, comprehensive access to healthcare, punish those responsible for throwing children in cages at the Mexican border, expand the number of judges on the Supreme court. Set up a dynasty that will take this country in the right directions for generations. They can't be distracted by infighting. | |
