Hidden gems of movies 15:45 - Apr 18 with 8342 views | BrixtonBlue | What are some really great movies that are perhaps less well known? My vote goes to Chronicle (2012). It's a 'super-powers' movie, but nothing like a regular super-powers movie. Done in a handheld camera documentary style (but not shaky) it's about some teens who find some weird crystals and begin developing super powers (and one of them chronicles the events as they unfold on his handheld camera). What makes this different is that they don't solve crime or save the world from aliens (which is why I said super-powers rather than superhero). Instead they lark about pulling pranks, just like real teens would. This is what I love about it; the realism. They act like teens would if they started developing the ability to fly, telekinesis etc. If you liked District 9 and Arrival in how they attempted to portray alien invasion in a realistic way, then this is the 'humans gaining super powers' equivalent. It's quite dark as well, as one of the teens starts to go a bit crazy... but I won't spoil it by saying any more. Whenever I mention Chronicle most people have never heard of it, so this is my vote for 'hidden gem'.

An all time favourite of mine. The story, the sets, the world it’s set in, the acting, the characters, the way it’s shot. A depressingly beautiful film. I recommend Cuck to anyone who enjoyed The Joker last year. A much more realistic look into a loser’s decline into snapping from the pressures of society without the anti-hero factor. Unless you’re a massive racist, then I imagine the film would have a whole other meaning.

Aye, Clive Owen immense in it, and Julianne Moore is excellent too (I've got the pure hots for her, but thats a story for another time...). Apparently the producers spent 2 days in Bexhill prior to filming; the set is actually based on the layout of the town - this appeals to my inner geek. Whilst everything is all a bit mad at the moment, its nowhere near Children of Men bad.

The warzone single take shot towards the end is cinematic sex.

Released in 2005, it is a film based on the 1994 Rwandan genocide.

Definitely not enjoyable. But yes, educational. I've still got a copy somewhere I think.

I'll put forward The Place Beyond the Pines, starts out seemingly as a standard heist movie but veers off in a totally unexpected direction, in a good way. A fantastic film. Hidden gems of movies on 22:41 - Apr 18 with 1735 views | Bugs | Bait is good.....and different. Pan's Labyrinth if you don't mind subtitles. I Tonya is very good. My Mrs and Daughter think that Ratatouille as well as The princess and the frog are fantastic films that slipped under most peoples radar. The one that Mark Kermode talks about on the radio 5 film show quite a bit is Sorcerer. It had a big budget, and the producers expected it to be a big hit. They released it at the same time as Jaws and nobody watched it. I keep meaning to watch it but not got around to it as yet. Hello to Jason Issacs and down with the Nazis. *Edit. This has made me actually now sit down and watch Sorcerer. Lets see if Kermode is right..... [Post edited 18 Apr 2020 22:51]

Hidden gems of movies on 10:15 - Apr 19 with 1607 views | Keno | Casablanca is well worth a watch, especially if you haven’t seen before Millennium with Cheryl Ladd is an interesting if not slightly hammy sci fi classic The Eagle has Landed if you want a war time ripping yarn and or Jenny Agutter Yanks is worth a watch A moment in time is well done, Christopher Reeve could act. Well almost If you want a classic series look for Shogun on YouTube. Possibly my favourite book and a well made adaption
