How is that anti-semitic?

I know it annoys fans of Israel and the right but what's the problem here?

Israel's police force is not a religion. I'm baffled.

Claiming that Israel is linked to the murder of George Floyd is not criticism of Israel, it's antisemitic conspiracy fantasy.

I have not seen a claim that the Israeli Security force were involved in the murder of George Floyd but there is a, apparently mistaken, claim that they trained United States police operatives in how to kneel on a neck. If there is a twist in this tale I would expect it to be something along the lines of the police in America were doing it in such a way as to endanger life and the Israelis had become focused enough to apply a technique of compulsion to surrender without loss of life - but the Americans did not pay enough attention should that ever have been pointed out to them.

As Darth has pointed out, criticism of a very proactive security force does not necessarily mean criticism of the nation or race that the security force draws it recruits from.

But it could also be pointed out that repressive regimes in the Gulf States, Iran, former Soviet satellite states such as Turkmenistan, China (I could go on, it is a depressingly long list) practice all manner of repressions and their security services are part of an extensive industry in goods and services including training. So why single out Israel, and if you do then make sure you have verifiable evidence - especially if you are in the shadow cabinet.

There seems to be another conspiracy theory going round that Keir never wanted her in the shadow cabinet and only felt obliged to give her a role because she challenged for the party Leader and was JC's choice but wanted to get her out at the first opportunity and the article gave him the lamb to slaughter.

I definitely think the first person step out of line with AS was going to be made an example of (and rightly so) but I don't buy the idea it's a socialist cull. He can replace her with another person on the left of the party if he wishes; in fact I'd encourage it, so it reduces the chance of internal warfare

Spin politics has resumed....plainly ridiculous from a brief look at the detail!

13m ago15:19

Here is the passage in the Independent’s interview with Maxine Peake referred to in the Labour statement (see 3.11pm) referencing an “antisemitic conspiracy theory”.

Born in Bolton to a lorry driver father and care worker mother, Peake is strident and expressive; if religion wasn’t anathema to her, she’d be perfect in the pulpit. “Systemic racism is a global issue,” she adds. “The tactics used by the police in America, kneeling on George Floyd’s neck, that was learnt from seminars with Israeli secret services.” (A spokesperson for the Israeli police has denied this, stating that “there is no tactic or protocol that calls to put pressure on the neck or airway”.

As my colleague Peter Walker has reported (see 2.47pm), Rebecca Long-Bailey subsequently posted a tweet saying her tweet sharing the interview was not intended to be an endorsement of everything in it. But the president of the Board of Deputies of British Jews said it was “pathetic” that she had not withdrawn the original tweet and apologised.

Fantastic leadership from SKS.

One thing I’d suggest is that he’s done the last thing the Tories would have wanted him to do in these circumstances. They know they’re dealing with a different opponent now.

As it will probably be helpful to the thread...

This is the article she shared:

https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/films/features/maxine-peake-int

This is her follow-up tweet:

This is her just now giving a longer explanation:

This is the source of Peake's point (which isn't loading right now presumably because of the amount of traffic going towards it):

Aside from the surprise that Starmer appears to actually have a strong opinion on something, it seems like he's playing this one safe. You could argue all day as to the extent to which Peake was actually promoting an antisemitic conspiracy theory or just exaggerating what the Amnesty International post says (to note for those it isn't loading for, it points out that some US police forces have trained in Israel, although doesn't mention Minnesota where Floyd was killed), but clearly some will feel it is and Starmer's nipped it in the bud.

A lot of people on here could do with reading that link, I was going to share it myself.

Are they all middle class white boys though? That's the real question.

The trouble is the argument has been Labour as a party has an anti-Semitic issue not individuals as such. Plenty of individuals have been suspended but the issue is they remained in the Labour party, take Livingstone as an example. Sacking her from the cabinet is one thing but if you want to give the correct impression the party won't tolerate it then he needs to kick her out of the Labour party

One of Corbyn's old team of supporters who always hated the Jewish community, good move by Starmer but also needs to kick her out of the Labour party. So much racism in the Country these days

Antisemitism is a cancer for the Labour Party, I’m glad he’s being decisive and direct, let’s hope this also serves a notice to all society that this cannot and will not be tolerated.

As stated higher up this tread that doesn't mention Minnesota where Floyd was killed, so aligning the training by Israel Service Service to the killing by a police force not trained by the Secret Service is anti-Semantic. Her sacking makes total sense

Attacking Jews and general antisemitic beliefs sadly seem to be extremely popular position. In no way is the state of Israel innocent in all of this however antisemitism does seem to be the confederate flag of the middle classes.

You see, callis, the problem is not with our hearing (although I have plenty of that admittedly), it is that link has no mention of the practice of kneeling on the neck of someone in custody - so why assert that the Israelis trained United States forces to do so? Also, no mention of Minnesota in that link, Baltimore, yes - but that is a few miles away...

As I mentioned earlier in this thread, white American policemen have kneeling on the necks of black suspects for over sixty years now. Not all white American policemen, not all black suspects, not all the time - but enough for it to be symptomatic of the race problem that riddles and weakens society in the United States. To bring Israeli politics into this transfers the focus away from what happened to George Floyd, maybe not as much as answering 'Black Lives Matter' with 'All Lives Matter' but enough to distract us from a possible, perhaps a probable win, on something that has been going wrong for so long. I think it is important for all of us who care, whether we are black or white or Asian, whether we are Christian, Muslim, Jew, Buddhist or secular, to unite in calling on the United States to put its house in order. Here's hoping that Glassers can share in that sentiment too.

What is the purpose of relating the George Floyd murder to Israel?

The George Floyd murder is a result of systematic racism in the US.

What sort of person, that is taking about global control, global capitalism, and then mentions George Floyd, thinks it relevant to mention Israel.

There is zero relevance.

Now let’s say you can make a case that US police training is overly aggressive.
Then it would be equally aggressive for all cItizens.

It isn’t. I watched a video of a white drunk guy, swinging an axe at US police, posted by some BLM protesters.

Therefore the issue with George Floyd is nothing to do with training, it is how training is applied, and overly aggressive measures are applied disproportionately to BAME people.

That is the issue. Black people are to be feared, because they are violent criminals, that is a racist trope.

Nothing to do with who trained the Police. Nothing to do with Israel.

A politician should know this is.
A politician promoting an article by an actor, should know better.

Are US police trained very badly, yes, but there are very bad American police instructors and courses.

Could some Israeli police be equally bad, violent and racist. Yes.

But to link global issues of control, to a single incident, and then specifically Israel, to me seems a jump that is invoking an anti-semitic trope.

Great post.

I'm still struggling to see tho, why the activities of the Israeli state are being equated with being Jewish - isn't this another example of the age old problem of defining anti-semitism? Or is the key in your earlier post where you said such allegations were going on before the modern state of Israel was even founded?
