Don’t shoot the messenger 09:10 - Mar 26 with 16901 viewsParky

I have just been sent a text from somebody who has previously been spot on with info, saying that Paul Cook sent the players home Wednesday midway through training due to lack of effort and intensity.

Apparently all the players left as told, meaning the lunch that was cooked/made had to be donated to the Samaritans.

If true, slightly concerning, but fair play to Cook.

Edit - Clarified this was Wednesday, not yesterday.

Ahhhh, poor little professional footballers, my heart bleeds for every one of them.

Wearing a complete lack of empathy as a badge of honour is very modern Britain. Well done.

So dont expect a win on Saturday then

If they cant be bothered to put effort in the first full weeks training they certainly wont be putting effort in when it comes to 11 cup finals.

I think that Matt ITK guy is saying it was an afternoon off as a reward...

If Woolfenden isn’t in the squad tomorrow I’ll be inclined to believe him.

He probably will be because McGuinness is away and Wilson is injured.

But I can tell you with absolute certainty, that they weren't allowed to go home early on Wednesday because of 'good work'.

Thanks. Phil says in the article McGuinness might be in the squad if he doesn’t play tonight. If he’s preferred to Woolfenden after not even being with the squad for most of the week, and Woolfenden staying behind to do extra work... it wouldn’t bode well.

ETA - just saw McGuinness played today.

Obsessed - TICK.

Never seen someone so butt hurt over a couple of down arrows. You're usually pretty good at attracting them, and not just from me.

Fitness is definitely an issue with this squad. It was noticeable against Portsmouth that there was a big difference between us and them. Pompey were still full of energy at 90 mins whereas most of our team looked dead on their feet.

It has been said all season that we only play with the right intensity for small spells in games and since Cook has arrived it has been even more apparent that they cannot maintain the level of energy required to carry out his game plan for 90 mins. This is perhaps why we have seen good 1st half performances followed by a flat 2nd half, Plymouth at home being another prime example.

At least Cook will now be patently aware of this and we can expect a very different scenario next year after a full pre-season.

Might also explain why we do well at the beginning of the season(s) and fall away, when other teams have got fully fit.

Fitness would play a bigger part as the season progresses. At the start of the season both teams are still building stamina levels.

Humble, hardworking and keen to learn.

This was how Danny Cowley described his new players after his first full week of training at Portsmouth.

Paul Cook hasn't used words even close to that about his players.

Tbh. I was always disturbed that the dressing room morale wasnt even low when Cook arrived. For me that's a dressing room way to comfortable.

Because we have a team full of useless dossers who don’t care that they’ve carried the club to the lowest position in 50+ years. They’ve all had it too easy for far too long and failure has never been punished.

Roll on the Summer when the majority will be leaving.

It wasn't yesterday, it was Wednesday afternoon they were sent home after a poor session in the morning.

To draw a military parallel, when troops have taken a beating in battle, to restore morale they must be taken out of the firing line, retrained and reinforced. It's what Montgomery* did to rebuild the 8th Army before El Alamein. It's extremely rare for things to turn around instantly and for that then to be sustained.

This week is the first chance Cook has had to do any of that, with the Saturday-Tuesday-Saturday cycle of games.

Some incoming managers can achieve a pretty instant turnaround. But that is likely to be a situation where morale is adequate but organisation has been poor. The latter can be easily and swiftly remedied. But if morale is bad, that takes time.

* and Auchinleck, to be fair.

Guthers - always the voice of moderation and wisdom.

He’s like the old pro who used to be the box to box midfield maestro but has now dropped into the back line and reads the game to perfection.

I think regardless of what he does off the field I feel like Chambers is part of the problem.
