Ipswich Town FC truly is dead now 16:19 - Apr 13 with 3730 viewschicoazul

In its’ place is a new vision run by one of the most ruthless men in football, a hardened negotiator with experience of physical infrastructure development, backed by billions and billions of American dollars.
The days of Ipswich as a Corinthian club run by and for gentlemen & lady amateurs, in a sleepy backwater, known for conviviality and harmony and an overall sense of Suffolk out on a limb weirdness and uniqueness, are over.
I feel very sad about this. No I am not unexcited about the owners and yes Evans was a disaster. But I feel something important has been lost now, never to return.

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!

Watching my team since the late 70's and just football in general has changed . More significantly during the days we haven't been anywhere near the Prem. Long gone are the days of the local football team who have ambition being managed by local infrastructure and dependent on the odd promotion, cup run, making a few quid on a youth product etc - times have changed and we haven't in all the last 13-14 years.

YOU club is as LOCAL and as CORINTHIAN as you want it to be .....Suffolk will always be Suffolk and my football team will always be MY football team regardless

I understand where you’re coming from - the days where having a good manager who can take the club from the bottom tier to winning the first division is dead and gone and that isn’t something to celebrate. We just have to adapt or we’ll never be able to consider any form of success again.

Mate, the apathy that many now feel towards ITFC means that it has been dying for years and years. Bring on the new era. It is hard to imagine things getting worse.

The answer to that is simple, adapt or die!

The Cobbolds were of their time and as much as many, myself included, would like things to have stayed as they were football has moved on light years from those times. We either go with the flow and try and make it work for us or stagnate.

The only thing 'Corinthian' about Evans was his amateurishness.

Lest we forget, Evans' only strategy and goal was 'hope to get promoted and sell for a profit'.

Indeed!

Whilst the new owners have broadly the same ambition they do at least appear to be serious and competent.

Of course they are, its not 1975 any more. Its high time this club evolved.

But as you allude to, that's the game and we need to be in it to have the slightest shot at winning it. The owners also aren't stupid and know the club has thrived in the past from having a certain brand and USP, so elements of that will be retained even if just superficially and for engagement.

I don’t disagree! But I feel sad about all this nonetheless.

My sadness started with the introduction of The Premier League and Sky Sports. Took away a lot of the magic for this old man.

Many things have changed for the Town since I was an eleven-year old watching them win the top division with players that were a collection of cast-offs, stalwarts and Ray Crawford. Even under Robson success brought money and vice versa, though the success was disproportionate to the money.

We got it all back for one season with George before he tried to cut further success from a cloth we couldn't afford - presumably he'd watched us fall agonisingly short of ultimate prizes under Robson with our squad of 14, and hoped to avoid the same.

Since then we've lived on hope, memories and a sometime random trust in Irish wingers that had never proved themselves as such, nor ever would.

Our support has held up really well. The ground, though tatty, still holds a certain charm, but the procession of past-glory managers and five-year plans built from candy-floss has produced a club which is ours, and which we love, but which is on a par with that of many a town/city in L1 and L2 whose football reputation has never really got going.

Either we ackowledge and embrace that and fight it out with such as Lincoln, Gillingham, Doncaster and Plymouth - or we face forward with the investment and infrastructure that is now an unavoidable ingredient of modern professional football culture, and a money-man that is reputed not to smile enough for some people's liking.

With you all the way there. The Cobbold era had to end and we should just be grateful that it happened. That, plus our tremendous success for a provincial club, helps to set us apart.
That and the fact that no other club is likely to emulate us and our remarkable journey - unless, of course, the American investors can somehow inspire a repeat.

Maybe in one sense, but in another the club I grew up with had a spark and life to it & for long periods felt at one with its community. Haven't seen much of that in the last 15 years. Maybe a bit of the old energy will come back now.

Is there anything Cameron touched that he hasn't fu cked up irredeemably? Sadly the Tory Party seems to be an exception.

A theologian might, perhaps, look at the concept of purgatory as a way of explaining the lag between administration and now.

I know exactly what you’re saying but I think I’d change your sentence slightly.

‘The SPORT you and I grew up with is over.’

There’s no place in 2021 for the type of club we once were, which makes me sad.
