Ashton - "This is not a stop-off for players to go onto other clubs' 13:00 - Jun 1 with 3683 viewsmonty_radio

This sounds powerful, but I can't quite see what it's aimed at. Clearly he's not saying we won't be like Brentford, and probably he's warning off freeloaders. But in a first-day speech of a man said not to be given to flannel, what scenario does he actually have in mind here?

I took it that the club is looking to build a squad that can not only compete in League One but the Championship and beyond?

A squad of players that buy into the project and want to grow with the club I imagine. As you say though, be interested to hear what context that was said in.

In the context EADT put it I read it as meaning "we're not going to sign 21-year-olds who have one good season and then sell them, we'll be signing peak age players who play their best football for us"?

I like the sound of that, but it seems a liitle optimistic if the financial limitations placed upon us prove as limiting as they could be.

from everything we've heard, "optimistic" very much defines our transfer strategy this Summer.

Interesting. The likes of Peterborough and Brentford actively market themselves as what might be termed a "stop off for players to go onto other clubs", ie "sign for us and your career will benefit". There's always lots of focus on a manager's ability to buy well, but for most clubs selling well is equally important.

He wants players that are committed and will be here for the long-term. Hopefully the days of loans and journeymen are over.

23 to 30 is when you'd expect most to play their best football, I guess. Which fits with the more serious sounding player links.

Didn't hear him, but at my most optimistic I like to think it'll mean we don't sell players of Tyrone Mings' quality when we've found & helped develop them!

Of course it is. We are literally a division three club. But I think I know what he means; no more squatters on contracts waiting for the next club.

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!

It's interesting as it's almost the opposite to what he did at Bristol, and you'd think with the ownership we have, it would almost be more likely we would be involved in high/quick sells when possible.

I don't think that means anything personally - if we get good offers we'll sell as any football club in the land bar the top 2 or 3.

Recruitment is the most important part of football, without good recruitment you go nowhere - whether that is the U9s into the academy or high profile first team signings.

Ashotn has a very good recruitment record in turns of net transfer spend etc, Cook has a very good record at spotting players and getting the best out of them.

We just have to hope those 2 strengths can combine and we nail our recruitment over next few windows - if we do everything else will fall into place.

Rather silly comment.

We do not have the financial clout to stop players from moving on (up), and I would be concerned if we were signing players who though L1 was their highest aspiration. Something that seems to have been all too frequent over the past few years.

I might suggest that Ashton and others slow down with the promises, so as to avoid putting up 'hostages to fortune' and stick with the line that they will be bustin' a gut' to greatly improve things and 'judge us next May' ......etc

I'd imagine if we can repeat the Brentford trick of buy and sell our new owners and particularly their backers will be ecstatic.

Because they need to make a profit and it is through player sales or promotion to the PL.

Perhaps that we're looking to sign players who want to be part of an Ipswich Town project going forwards, who want to stay with the club and help it rise through the divisions. Not seeing us as just a shop window where they can continually flirt with other suitors, look for transfer opportunities and try to force them through.

Can't think of any players who have successfully used Ipswich Town as a "shop window" over the past 3 seasons.

In the PL nothing can really be made unless nothing extra is spent bar promotion bonuses and increased wages - and what is left will merely cover what it costs to get there.

It is player sales where the money is made

Hopefully it means that PC won't be getting in his old mates from Pompey and Wigan before they eventually progress to Altrincham and Eastleigh.
