Graham Souness hates England 09:26 - Jun 19 with 10282 viewsonceablue

Why do the Scottish hate us so much

When I was growing up i also supported Scotland cheering them on as my second team

It was only when I started working in Scotland I realised how much they hates us, was in Pub in Glasgow watching England and the hatred was at a different level

One colleague told me they supported ABE ie, anyone but England.

I guess there is a lot of Hatred particular in Glasgow full stop with the whole Rangers Celtic thing.

By the way Souness looked a very ill man apart from his very very very obvious false teeth was Waiting for Wrighty to make a teeth gag!!

Souness may dislike the England football team, but I know he loves the English. He's married to an English woman, the person he would most like to meet is the Queen and I'd be pretty confident he is dead against Scottish independence and is pro-Brexit.

He is a good guy and a proper man.

"...the person he would most like to meet is the Queen and I'd be pretty confident he is dead against Scottish independence and is pro-Brexit." You make him sound like an idiot.

I've been to Scotland lots of times doing the 42 at its been great in grounds, clubs and pubs. Would they cheer on anyone but England, mostly yes. The only place I didn't enjoy was Ibrox when surrounded by loads of Union flags.

I was based in Scotland for 3 years and never experienced any anti English abuse. Glasgow is the most welcoming city in the UK, in my experience.

I can only speak from experience, but the last time we went to Scotland, people in the Border areas were really friendly, but once we hot to Edinburgh it was a totally different story.

From Mark's and Spencer's on Princes Street, to a barber shop, pubs and restaurants, people's behaviour towards us changed as soon as we spoke. We found a nice Italian owned pizza restaurant and went there 3 nights running eventually. Friends have had similar experiences in Edinburgh.

"people's behaviour towards us changed as soon as we spoke". I lived in Scotland for four years and only once did I have someone take offence at my accent and he was drunk. Maybe it was what you said or the way that you said it rather than the accent you said it in?

The hate that exists is due to historical reasons - but not ALL Scottish people hate us (and a lot of the people voting in the referendum aren't Scottish anyway).

Also, not all people are into football, and its tribalism.

It's not difficult, really.

Sensible. Thank you.

Can I have a drink please/ number 2 back and sides etc? The barber was chatty with everyone else, except when he heard my accent, not another word spoken. As i said, only from personal experience, and the locals in the Border regions were lovely people.

Graham Souness is a walking contradiction. The dirtiest player I ever had the misfortune of watching in a team that blamed everybody but themselves when they lost. I cannot stand the man. When he played, he was a good player, but if things weren't going his way, he would kick his way out of it. Wouldn't take notice of anything he said.

That's not what I base my view of him on. That was to explain my view that he loves the English, just might not love the England football team.

I think Souness is more of a fundamental rights of man guy:

'I received the ball, controlled it, and lashed a shot towards goal. Tommy Smith was on the other team and it hit him on the leg. It clearly stung and some of the other players started laughing. I had a smile on my face as well. I saw it as karma. Tommy responded with a tirade of abuse. It was ‘black this, black that’.

The place went quiet. Everybody could hear it, including the staff. He was a legend. I was a nothing. Nobody said a word.

I’d had enough of him: this bitter old man. So I went over and squared up: nose to nose. I looked at him dead in the eye. “You know what, Tommy; one night you’ll be taking a piss at home and I’ll be there waiting for you with a baseball bat,” I said, calmly. “And then we’ll see what you’ve got to say.” I wanted to start a fight with him. And then he walked away.

I look back now and remember this moment as a real low point. I’d grown up loving Tommy Smith. He was a hero of Bill Shankly’s team. But you only see the player, the legend: the hero. You don’t know the person. From then on, he was no hero of mine. As a human being, Tommy Smith was a disappointment, a complete let-down.

Graeme Souness was the only one that came over in the immediate aftermath. “Well done, Howard,” he said. “Tommy deserved that”. Graeme was a true leader.'

Many Irish people love the English. Go to any number of towns and cities in Northern Ireland.

And go out in Dublin for a drink and you'll find the majority have time for the English.

I live and work in NI, occasionally get across the border and have had no problems with the people whatsoever👍

I really find that surprising, especially in Edinburgh. My other half is a Scot so I spend a lot of time there, never have any issues, her Dad lives in Edinburgh now and we go there several times a year (in normal times) and that's genuinely the very last place I would expect that.

To be honest, parts of Edinburgh it's tough to hear a Scots accent at times.

I think they asked for the union in 1707 didn't they ?

And before that, in 1603, Scotland manager James VI took on the England job too:

Until I read this little snippet I never realised that the Union Jack was a Scottish idea.

This did actually happen, I was in Edinburgh with my wife and she felt the same. Maybe it was just our perception, but that's how we both felt. It was over 20 years ago mind you, maybe it would be different if we went back now.

I think you'd have a very different experience now, Edinburgh is quite a cosmopolitan city these days and Scots on the whole are quite welcoming.

I think we tend to remeember the bad experiences / rude people and forget the good ones. It's natural. I had a very drunk and rude Zimbabwean racially abusing me and others for the crimes of the UK (like Jeera...around 100 years before I was born)

Was quite annoyed and upset until someone asked me 'Ever met a drunk gobby w@nker at home?" and simply saying "There you are, happens everywhere sooner or later"

Well, exactly.

The people in the nations, provinces, principalities and even the more forgotten regions of England don’t have a problem with the English who come there. Our problem is with those who control from afar and show no signs of knowing/caring we exist.

I think people are a bit quick to dismiss other people's experiences sometimes and only consider their own.

If you had grief then you had grief, no reason for people to make out you're being dishonest. We can get unlucky sometimes though.

I've had abuse in India, Malaysia, Australia, here [UK] and in some locations in Europe, but that doesn't mean I'm suggesting that's how my experience of each place has been defined to me.

In fact, looking at that short list, it's hard not to wonder if maybe it's me.

Nah, that's not it. It was definitely them.

Agreed. Been a while since I was up there though.

The anti-English sentiment from what I’ve seen here in Wales is against the system. It’s rarely personal. At a one to one level people are generally very open and helpful (more so than I ever found in Ipswich or outskirts of London). I suspect it’s the same up there too.

And it’s complex. You’ve the Nats who are anti English, a middle ground who couldn’t care less and Unionists who are very pro English.
