Graham Souness hates England 09:26 - Jun 19 with 10292 viewsonceablue

Why do the Scottish hate us so much

When I was growing up i also supported Scotland cheering them on as my second team

It was only when I started working in Scotland I realised how much they hates us, was in Pub in Glasgow watching England and the hatred was at a different level

One colleague told me they supported ABE ie, anyone but England.

I guess there is a lot of Hatred particular in Glasgow full stop with the whole Rangers Celtic thing.

By the way Souness looked a very ill man apart from his very very very obvious false teeth was Waiting for Wrighty to make a teeth gag!!

I’ve been to Scotland a few times and they’re ok but the only time I’ve actually felt welcome is in Glasgow Indian restaurants (best curries in Britain). They loathe the English. It’s as simple as that.

Like you, in my yoof I supported all the home nations, but not now - if Scotland played Dictators and Maniacs United, I’d be cheering on Vlad the Impaler and co.

To say the Scots loathe the English is a bit of a sweeping generalisation. In my experience of visits to Scotland, I have found people in shops etc and in the street to be exceptionally friendly and helpful. Indeed, the only other part of the UK I have visited which seemed similar is Northern Ireland.

Could it be the arrogance, sense of entitlement and apparent hatred of anything that isn't English? And spilling over into Brexit bullying, Tory corruption and dismissal of Scottish culture. Not saying all English fans are like that but it's not hard to explain. And sadly it's not just Scotland who feel this way.

Just glad it’s all over and we can get back to enjoying the tournament now. I’m sure the next time we play up there and England fans swarm through the middle of Glasgow urinating and puking everywhere and chanting how much we hate the Scots, we’ll be welcomed with open arms.

Can't say that I notice that in many English folk myself.

Arrogance: maybe in the days of Empire, but these days we're actually over-good at self-loathing.

Sense of Entitlement: Again, perhaps in days gone by, but I think most English footy fans have been trained by experience to expect the worst. For evidence, see the shock and jubiliation at making the semis at the last WC.

Apparent hatred of anything that isn't English: We're actually one of the most open, multi-cultural societies on the planet, in relative terms and far more so than Scotland.

Well, of course you don’t get it.

Think about your and others attitudes to the USA and Americans – what you like and don’t like. England is pretty similar for non-English.

Some of my very best friends are English and American. Doesn’t mean I like the collective attitude of England and the USA.

I can only speak from experience, but the last time we went to Scotland, people in the Border areas were really friendly, but once we hot to Edinburgh it was a totally different story.

From Mark's and Spencer's on Princes Street, to a barber shop, pubs and restaurants, people's behaviour towards us changed as soon as we spoke. We found a nice Italian owned pizza restaurant and went there 3 nights running eventually. Friends have had similar experiences in Edinburgh.

Had a feeling you'd have a nibble. It's not about 'not getting it' - its about disagreeing about this narative of England the land of of the crap. I think we're better than that, but we're so well trained into putting ourselves down, we lap it up and agree with people like you.

Spoiler alert: Every country hates England. I guess it's a bit like us and Colchester in the fact that England don't really care about Scotland, but us Scots hate the English, as you're our actual local rival. I for one cannot wait to see England knocked out.

I really don't get this, I posted similar on another thread and at the risk of repeating myself I am lucky to have travelled far and wide and England and the English are loved wherever I have laid my hat.

I would say that the only country on the planet that has a dislike for us is France, probably because they are either embarrassed, jealous or have a misguided sense of grandeur, although even then, when I have been over there whacking their carp and catfish to bits they have been quite hospitable - in a turned up nose sort of way that they display.

I have never travelled to South America but from stories I have heard from fellow peoples I think they love us there - although I accept Argentina might have the hump but I am confident our intrepid planet saving, gas guzzling, aeroplane using corespondent Blue Lagos might be able to put us right - and I still salivate over his stories of Argentinian steaks!

As for Scotland, they are a very confused bunch. I gotta say that I absolutely love the place and I love the people. The thing is though, they are all nuts. The Celtic fans support Ireland and the Rangers fans support England. The Scottish football supporting kilt wearing fountain botherers are all from the smaller towns.

The only people as far as I can see that hate the English are the English

Yeah, Scotland is a country that’s full of hate ...

I think I can speak for the vast majority of Scots who don’t hate anyone, let alone English people. But who are never that upset if England and the idea of Englishness (including that strange Anglo-centric version of Britishness) come a cropper.

Having lived in Scotland some years ago I don’t fully agree with your view.

I was in a pub in Rosyth during Maradona’s hand of God goal - the local reaction I witnessed is forever etched in my mind. The commonly quoted ‘who do you support? Anybody playing England’ as a bit of friendly banter goes much deeper than that.

Hey Lucers, I nearly posted about Argentina yesterday as it happens.

(Btw - don't eat steak - gave them up a while back but appreciate the sentiment)

So the Argentines in my experience are incredibly nice people. Obviously there is a shared history with the Falklands/Malvinas which is far from positive - it's a topic you just don't go there - unless you want to fall out with people. Not dissimilar say to discussions with people about NI. You know their views (whatever side) are deeply held, based on their experiences and not views they are going to change anytime soon.

But away from all thing Falklands/Malvinas - I found the Argentines to be incredibly welcoming and polite and many have an interest in European culture. They are genetically very European of both Spanish and Italian migrants in the main (bit of Welsh in Patagonia) with very low levels of Andean heritage compared to Chile/Peru/Bolivia.

There is also far less black (ex-slave) influence compared to Brazil and northern parts of South America.

Anyhow - I definitely picked up an anti-european/anti-colonialist dislike/resentfulness from some people when visiting countries in the Andes - far less so in Argentina. They are of course incredibly passionate about footie, which helps when engaging with someone like me but there is a warmth and pride in their country that is quite enduring.

All quite a welcome surprise as I was expecting much more resentment, even hostility over the Falklands war which left a fair few of their young men dead. You do see lots of memorials to those they lost but not in an anti-british manner if that makes sense. Suppose like many of our war memorials which are not anti-german.

Yo BL.

Hope you are well.

Very interesting post by the way.

I think S America is a place I would love to go but might never get there due to my ageing years. I have also never done the Australia / New Zealand thing but that doesn't bother me because I am thinking they are are too much like us, so what's the point? Also I would rather pay $2 for a gram than $100

Actually, thinking about it, the planet is huge and although I might think I have seen a lot of it - in reality I have seen feck all.

Iceland is another place I would like to go to.

Here's the thing, I know you are a frustrated lockdowner. Guess where our lot are planing to go to for our first jolly after this has all ended?

We are all going to Chernobyl! I think that will be quite interesting.

I was reading some Ally Mccoist preview article and he was saying that they used to have England vs Scotland training sessions back in his Rangers days. Apparently Souness always used to make up the numbers on the England team, which none of the other jock players could fathom. So maybe he doesn't hate the English? Or maybe hes making up for those past mistakes in Rangers training?

Probably didn’t trust himself not to go smashing everyone to bits ! I thought he looked in great nick, not many 68 year olds looking that good.

Reason he was down on England is it’s tiresome for everyone else when they are talked up massively, made favourites for the tourney, all the hype then play like that or worse every time. Some of my mates predicting 4-0, 5-1, ridiculous.

You notice it more when you spend time in the various devolved countries. In England we see it as a bit of fun, ribbing the Celtic nations, taking the piss out of their accents, making them the butt of our jokes, not really understanding or appreciating their sense of nationalism and identity. But it gets tediously dull when they have to put up with it all the time. And we English like to think it's just a bit of banter, but we absolutely hate it when the tables are turned and they take the piss out of us.

It's not restricted to football. It's a broad cultural thing.

I'm mainly referring to when it comes to football. I'm sure you've got a lot of friends/acquaintances that support Norwich, but as a Town fan, it's natural to generally dislike Norwich fans. All my friends and family are English, I don't hate them, I just don't want them to win or be successful. It's all tribalism tbh when it comes to football.

Iceland defo worth the effort. Checked out motorbike hire there when they were green listed, but way too expensive to justify. Ferry via Faroes too, but again silly money :-(

Planet is indeed huge. And we are all very insignificant at the end of the day. Another reason for us not to collectively fck it up for the next generations :-)

Btw, best thing any of us can do in that respect? Not have any kids. Which is handy if you like globetrotting too :-)

We moved from Suffolk to the Hebrides in the 80’s and the friendly local kids stoned the windows of our house every evening for the first fortnight after we moved in. I was eventually accepted and became friends with many of them but I’ve never forgotten it and it’s one of the reasons I find racism so abhorrent - they didn’t know me or us, it was just based on prejudice.

You can’t condemn an entire nation for the actions of a few but there is an arrogant group of ignorant, Anglo-centric empire-loving English people that grinds the gears of many of our neighbours.

It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.
