Liam Gibbs to norwich... (n/t) on 15:05 - Jul 7 by JammyDodgerrr

Except this guy is not "just another academy player". He is actually a huge loss, for our future i think, and it wouldn't have been expensive to keep him. It's not like he is walking out to a top 4 club.

Is he though?

How do you know?

He didn't stand out playing in the FA youth cup and when given a chance at 1st team level looked way off.

Could just be that club didn't fancy him that much, otherwise they would have offered him a better deal.

Or is it cos someone said he was ace, he must be.. type thing?

RIP Sir Bobby

It's a business decision - reference page 22, bullet point 3 of Evans's powerpoint presentation to the three kittens and their debt pile he had eyes on grabbing.

A talented young player at Norwich has far more opportunity to develop into something - and to be sold on for the 15% sell on clause. Its all upside with no downside - just get the man in the open neck shirt to spout a few platitudes - and sign some unemplyed players

I'm pretty disappointed about this, I would have liked to see him get game time this season and don't like seeing us lose one of our own to the scum. Hopefully this is the last act of the banter era and the next few years see balance restored.

I highly doubt Gibbs leaving is going to be the financial catalyst that lands us Crooks.

The other thing to add to that is that being successful at U18 is no guarantee that you will make the grade in league football. Very few of the U18s that won the Youth Cup back in 2005 went on to have decent careers with us

Agreed. He wanted more than we were willing to pay. We can't start breaking boundaries just to spite Norwich. Might work out for him, might work out for Norwich, might work out for everyone.

It seems that members of this forum forget that there is literally a WORLD of football players OTHER than those we have inside the club, and there will inevitably be players better than Gibbs (who was nowhere near first team ready, as we saw). What do people want? Do they want us to be the Chelsea of L1 and just hoard talent? People have to play for other clubs or we wouldn't have a sport

Problem is, we've been so bad for a while, the smallest shining light that comes through the Academy is deemed the next Grealish despite not showing anything close to being near first team ready. He will go and be with the Norwich U23/Academy for the next 2 years, playing a better football schedule than we can offer at cat 2 anyway.

People need to remember we have one of the best Player Tradesman in the industry, if he doesn't feet we should break the bank for a player, he's the best one to trust.

Never be afraid to share your thoughts.

Yes he is, and he has been for a long time - he was one of the very few players who signed a pro deal on his 17th birthday. He was given a debut in Papa Johns as a first year scholar.

The only games he played for the 18s this season, literally, were the Youth Cup ones as he was in 23s squad (only player to have a record close to that), he was a standout of the Youth Cup run, all the way through it.

For his league debut, he didn't train with the first team before that, or after it, was a strange Lambert decision.

Everything about him, shows he was seen as the main man in his age group, and that was the age group that got to semi of Youth Cup and part of 23s side which came 2nd in their league.

Would he have kicked on, none of us know, but he was very much viewed and treated as a star prospect - and he's know walked out the door for nothing because we waited until the day before his contract was up to try and negotiate something.

We may never hear about him again, but this is poor from all involved to get to this stage and end up picking up a tribunal

I suspect he was 'tapped up' some while back.

They will point to the number of youngsters they have recently developed to play in the PL. They have even persuaded Gilmour to go there. While we have struggled to get our youngsters up to L1 standard. We've not even produced a first team keeper in 15 years.

PL club with Cat 1, or L1 club with Cat 2.

... because if local press is to be believed, he wanted to stay, that was his first choice. He is one of the better academy lads coming through, who has had a taste of first team football and had a pathway be clear to the first team, he could/should well be part of it.

It could've been anyone he went too, it's p*ss poor letting one of our better talents to leave, when it's reported he wanted to stay.

If he wanted guarantees of first team football, as has been suggested, then no, it's not p*ss poor. It's exactly right.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

It said we offered him fresh terms at the back end of last year tbf, I'm sure wasn't last minute

Worth noting that Phil has reported other clubs in the running to sign him. I don't want him to leave full stop, but I'd sleep much better if we went anywhere but up the road.

Sorry badly worded, we had offered him terms that were deemed to be unacceptable, but then didn't go back to the table again to renegotiate those until the last minute

Not a done deal. Likely but other clubs - including one not previously linked - still keen. Not going to be staying here barring a major miracle though.

Why has this been handled like this Phil? Surely someone in academy or U23s should be getting a hold of this situation to just get it nailed down - or more realsitically should have done 6 weeks ago before damage was done

If we can't trust what our head of academy is saying about these players, we might as well pack the whole academy up. What's the point in it?

As Joe pointed out in another post, he is way above his level and to let him walk away, over presumably a couple of hundred quid a week, to Norwich, is a shambles.

Could it just be that he genuinely wants to go? Nothing we can do if he wants to play at higher level

That may be the case now, but wasn't what I'd been hearing through back end of the season - was deemed a formality.

Just another academy player? Klug stated he was one of the most talented players he's ever worked with, or do you just bracket him with all the other youngsters?

Was just about to say the same, Klug really rated him - gutted

No one is comparing him to Grealish but Gibbs is a promising young player and one people at the club clearly think we should keep. The idea that because he's not ready for the first team he is no great loss is bizarre.

Not really difficult to understand Joe

He was offered a new deal, he turned it down. We went back with a last minute increase, he still turned it down. Answer is Gibbs/Agent wanted more than we were prepared to offer

The desperate need to turn it into the clubs wrong doing is rather strange.

Never be afraid to share your thoughts.

I think Gibbs has seen enough of Cook to know his future lies elsewhere - its a short career and Town have been stuck in reverse for 20 years.

It's not far removed from any job where some new owners you know nothing about - and some new staff that have done nothing special hove up talking in riddles. The people who do the work get restless

No idea. Town made the offer and have been unwilling to negotiate. Indeed, until last week there had been no further talks other than an 'it's still on the table' type conversation in about March. I suspect his situation slipped down the list of priorities with everything else which is going on, hence the late move to sort it out last week.

As far as I'm aware, there was no last-minute increase. The same offer was made.
