Liam Gibbs to norwich... (n/t) on 15:31 - Jul 7 by Steve_M

No one is comparing him to Grealish but Gibbs is a promising young player and one people at the club clearly think we should keep. The idea that because he's not ready for the first team he is no great loss is bizarre.

The comparison to Grealish isn't of him as an individual its the majority of our academy players who leave when it comes to TWTD and social media comments as if we've just lost another Grealish because they are academy players they are deemed incredible.

The club were happy for him to stay, he decided not too.

It's not a great loss, as him leaving has no effect on our seasons going forwards as he wouldn't have been involved in them.

4/5 years time... no one knows where he will be

Could it just be that he genuinely wants to go? Nothing we can do if he wants to play at higher level

He wanted to stay.

Does seem a weird one. So the case of he wanted to stay but wanted more more or playing time? Is there a sense he was being too demanding?

Not at all

We offered him a contract, he turned it down. We as a club, following plenty of discussions between club staff decided what was our maximum offer, he declined it.

Nothing else to see here.

We’re letting our youth team captain that took us to the FA Youth Cup final walk out the door to our biggest rivals ffs

As far as I'm aware, there was no last-minute increase. The same offer was made.

There you go then, even firmer case of the club sticking their maximum offer on the table. Fair play to them

To say this is poor from the club or club failing to retain the best youth in years for a few hundred quid a week is basically saying the club, Ashton and in particular Cook are incompetent and don’t know what they’re doing.

The reality is that we just don’t know what has happened in this instance. Does the player want away? Is the agent asking for guarantees the club doesn’t wish to fulfil? Is it that while he was a prospect a year ago, people aren’t sure now? Are the wage demands out of kilter? Was the I want to stay comment brinkmanship? We just don’t know the truth of it.

What we do know is that this mess of a club is going to take a long while to sort out. We are an established mid table League One club. From a player with prospects perspective you have to have a good reason to stay when a Premier League club like Norwich come calling under the present academy system.

It is up to the owners and management to build the club back up and properly, assuming there really is any money there. Then we might have a chance of retaining good prospects, if we decide to keep an Academy. At the moment I can’t see the point.

Why has this been handled like this Phil? Surely someone in academy or U23s should be getting a hold of this situation to just get it nailed down - or more realsitically should have done 6 weeks ago before damage was done

How ?

Turn our Cat 2 into Cat 1 ?

Ensure our U23's will be playing at the same level as theirs next season ?

Point to the near £120m worth of players we have progressed onto PL clubs.

Where ever he goes, it will be to a PL club. At the moment we are never going to be able to compete with that, irrespective of what wage we offer.

Absolute nonsense. We wouldn't have been held to ransom, there is no fair play to them on this, it's a shocker we will undoubtedly come to regret. It's not a transfer here, its one of the most talented youth players we've had in years, and we are letting him walk out the door when he wants to stay over presumably, peanuts.

If he wanted to stay, he would have.

Whatever 'shortage' of wages with us, he would have made up further down the line.

When PL clubs come calling they have so much more to offer.

As the £100m TV allows.

This is quite some spin for losing a highly-rated young player to a more successful club (be it them or anyone else).

It's been stated multiple times he wants to stay. He isn't using us to push to some other big club into a better deal. He literally wants to be here, and is only going elsewhere because we've handled it so poorly.

If he wants to stay, he would stay. Your wording here is very strange. He's being offered more money or whatever the reason, so he wants to leave, not stay.

It's being pointed out the big clubs can offer so much more than us, all I am trying to say is, it's not really relevant how much they can offer because he hasn't been pushing for a move. He wants to stay here and was not likely to be asking for a massive amount of money.

I think the real question here is was what we offered him competitive? Bearing in mind we will be talking about differences here of hundreds not thousands.

My feeling here is we weren't that fussed about keeping him which seems to be totally at odds with we've seen and heard - in terms of his advancement to the U23s and the way coaches speak about him.

If he wasn't asking for a massive amount of money then the club would presumably match Norwich. They can offer more money which we are either unable or unwilling to match given our knowledge of him. There comes a point where money talks, whether right or not.

he has been offered better prospects by joining a PL club

it happens, as does players putting out what best suits them at the time

Problem is, we've been so bad for a while, the smallest shining light that comes through the Academy is deemed the next Grealish despite not showing anything close to being near first team ready. He will go and be with the Norwich U23/Academy for the next 2 years, playing a better football schedule than we can offer at cat 2 anyway.

People need to remember we have one of the best Player Tradesman in the industry, if he doesn't feet we should break the bank for a player, he's the best one to trust.

"One of the best player tradesman in the industry" - I think Cook will be excellent for us, but lets calm down a bit. He's 54 and never managed a team above mid table Championship, majority in the lower leagues...if he's one of the best in the business, the business has been missing something for a decade and a bit. He's not infallible

Pretty disappointed with this Gibbs stuff, clearly one of, if not our most promising academy prospect going for what will end up being a nominal fee at tribunal. Poor business by the club at best (this isn't some statement on the new regime's overall direction, which is very promising, but there will be hiccups). Hopefully one of these other interested PL clubs gazumps them lot, so that sting goes a bit

Being a bit obtuse here. No one in football is doing it for the pure love of it. It's pretty obvious that "he wanted to stay" means "he'd have preferred to stay here, if our offer had been vaguely in line with what others were going to offer".

If he was offered the terms he wants at Town - which aren't much more than has been offered - then he'd stay. Or would have stayed at least.

Depends what the terms he wants are. If it was just a small increase on the money side of things then yes it does seem an odd one from the club. If, as has been reported, he's demanded first team status then I’m not surprised it’s come to this.

So we took up the option on players like Drinan and Jackson with the aim of immediately selling them for a nominal fee even though we could have been stuck with them and fans thought that was great/clever business by Ashton. But we don't offer a bigger contact to Gibbs and then sell him for much more than a nominal fee to a Prem team, that doesn't make any sense Ashton.
Why didn't they offer Gibbs a bigger contract and then sell him as they did with Drinan, surely they should have known prem teams like Norwich were sniffing around, if they didn't they need to have a hard look at themselves. I have a feeling they dropped the ball with Gibbs

... because if local press is to be believed, he wanted to stay, that was his first choice. He is one of the better academy lads coming through, who has had a taste of first team football and had a pathway be clear to the first team, he could/should well be part of it.

It could've been anyone he went too, it's p*ss poor letting one of our better talents to leave, when it's reported he wanted to stay.

But we don’t really know why they let him go do we. I doubt this is about money; I presume his demands were felt to be unrealistic for us (place in the 1st team squad). I doubt he’s been promised that at nufc.

He wanted to stay.

He wanted to stay, but didn't.

There's only one motivator for the vast majority of people and that's money.

We didn't offer what he or his agent deemed appropriate, but what's appropriate when a player hasn't been in the first team?

The manager and team must make a business desicion at that point in time. We see an academy prospect "one of our own" Cook and his team see just another player and must calculate the worth of that player to them and apply that pragmatically.

Do I like it? No, but it is what it is.

Shame he didn't accept the offer if he did want to stay, was it really that derisory?
