If we're prepared to let Gibbs walk... 15:27 - Jul 7 with 18430 views | ITFCBlues | Why are we bothering with the academy? Seems pointless if you're letting your best players walk for peanuts.

If we're prepared to let Gibbs walk... on 12:16 - Jul 14 by hoppy | Is a one-off compensation payment the end of it in a situation like this, or would we be likely to get any sell-on percentage in future? |
Whatever is agreed is between the clubs, so basically like a more usual transfer deal.

So everyone bemoaning it We could end up with upto 500k. Potentially an sell on % without the need to develop ourselves. In a lower grade academy set up Thats quite a tidy arrangement really. He will prob develop better there anyway with better games to play etc. [Post edited 14 Jul 2021 12:22]

Could end up with a bit more, might be £600,000-ish, might end up a little lower. And there could be a sell-on, further cash on milestones etc as you say.

It's only a "tidy arrangement" if he doesn't ultimately make the grade, isn't it? If he's good enough to feature for Norwich within a couple of seasons we've just flushed £millions down the toilet for the sake of saving about £50k.

Just don't get it, if he was keen to stay and it was only a few hundred quid, why couldn't it be sorted? Either the club weren't too arsed, or Gibbs wasn't that bothered about staying...

Not really. If he makes the grade and weve got add ons included it's better for us. The likelihood is he wont develop here as much compared to a cat 1 side. Win win for us imo.

Chatted with someone recently who's close to the Gibbs family and it would appear the agent is the one that's been doing all the engineering...

Cant be. When I suggested such a thing I was told the agent would only do what Gibbs himself wanted him to do. ;)

Hoo yeah, if he turns into a £30m player we might get a whole £1m out of it! Maybe we should send them Baggott and Humphreys as well, seeing as its win-win apparently. [Post edited 14 Jul 2021 12:43]

No, me neither really. I think it should have been thrashed out months ago, before the takeover even. Club just seems to have taken a take it or leave it approach to the situation. Haven't shown too much enthusiasm about keeping him, whereas Norwich have done quite the opposite from what I gather.

Why stop there, just close the academy and give all the players to Norwich. [Post edited 14 Jul 2021 12:48]

Surely it’s only win win if you consider 10% of any subsequent profit equal to 90% of any profit?

No need to stop academy but there are players who wont develop here but may elsewhere whilst we are cat 2 imo. If they get to a certain stage of development and arent close to first team picture here then yeah it may end up being better for all parties to move on. It varies. But having offered Gibbs an offer of which he rejected it. The fact we will still get a good solid free with potential add ons isnt the end of the world. [Post edited 14 Jul 2021 13:05]

If he's a massive success and worth loads of money, it'll represent a big mistake and a massive "opportunity cost" on our part. It's utterly daft to pretend otherwise.

Can say that about any player when it comes to contract negotiations. If he turns out a dud. Wed have gained a bit of money for him without paying out any further wages on him. People are desperate for it to be the clubs fault again despite offering a contract of which he rejected.

This thread is just a painful read, we've lost a top academy prospect - there's no positive to it. Sloppy from the club, I won't be too harsh on current regime about it as was a longer standing ongoing issue, and it obviously fell down their list of priorities - but must do better going forwards

It will be the clubs fault if he ends up a £10mill plus valued player for the sake of us not offering him a better deal!

Just offer everyone more money. That's a great bit if advice. How would you then deal with all other u18s who find our what you offered Gibbs.. just offer them more money too? Dangerous game to play at that level.

Since the takeover, some people have decided to be full-time unpaid propagandists for the club, for reasons I don't really understand. I said "if", I meant "if". If he makes good on his promise and ends up worth a lot more than we got for him then it's a failure. There is no need to pretend everything is a win all the time. [Post edited 14 Jul 2021 13:15]

Players wages are determined by their ability and potential. I will take Bryan Klugs feedback on Gibbs being one of the brightest players to come out of our academy as a good enough reason for me to believe we should have done more to have kept him. Ultimately though, this should have been tied up long before the new regime were in place.

Short conversations: "Why don't I get the same money as Gibbs?" You aren't as good and there aren't Premier League teams trying to sign you.
