Barry & Jacobs both coming is quite logical when you think about it 10:04 - Aug 6 with 3149 viewsSomethingBlue

Wide forward options: Burns, Dobra, Jacobs, Barry (/Chaplin?)
10 options: Fraser, Chaplin (/Dobra?)
CF options: Piggott, Norwood, Bonne (/Chaplin, Barry if play a two)

Think that's exactly the depth and flexibility we need in order to be serious. Now for CM (two if Nolan doesn't come back), CB, LB and that's us done.

Addresses an area that needs addressing. Jacobs is a bit underwhelming but interested to see what Barry can do.

Dunno, haven't seen him kick a ball for months and months so I guess we need to see what shape he returns in.

The only concern for me with Jacobs would be his fitness. Outside of that, the Pompey fans really rate him!

Seems like one player too many to me. And I don’t like taking young players on loan in a position where we have our own youngster coming thru.
Having said that who can complain about having lots of options? Apart from well, me obviously.

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!

The injuries are the worry for me, also not much end product in the way of goals in recent years. As a squad option he should do fine, not sure he's being signed as a regular starter. I do wonder if he's a bit of a Plan B that we've pulled the trigger on now Celina is off the table.

It leaves us well stocked but I doubt players like Barry/Dobra will cry too much if used off the bench for significant periods. Also two or three of those will get injuries that sideline them for fair spells, or will have issues that need nursing along, and if we want to be better than the others we need the depth. Can't mess around and it doesn't seem that we are.

Does 9 players for 4 positions fit with Cook's tight-knit squad thing? Any week when they're all fit that's at least 2 out of the matchday squad entirely I'd say...

It does seem the response to last season's attacking flaws has been to sign a ton of attacking players, which is fine but we don't really have a left back and we only have two fit CMs. Squad feels a touch unbalanced at the minute. Hopefully the next couple of signings will address that.

Honestly, I suspect balance won't be an issue in a fortnight's time. You have to take the signings when they become available, to a large extent. Clear in the LB case for example that Coulson would long be through the door if Boro hadn't had an injury.

On the other hand Barry and Jacobs frees up Burns and Fraser to cover RB and CM respectively, so perhaps ups our balance that way a little.

Possibly, although shifting players to play in positions they probably weren't signed to play is less than ideal. I imagine it's more a case that deals for another CM and LB are taking longer to finalise. I hope the Caulson deal isn't too far away, otherwise we need to move on to other targets.

Coulson deal is done, just need Boro to release him so that is one done.

Think there is a chance Dobra goes out on loan with all these options, Salford are keen.

But yep, you need serious quality,m can't be relying on one player who then gets injured or loses form

Think it makes more sense when you separate the AMs from the STs.

We’ve got 6 AMs for three positions, which is perfect IMO, especially when you consider that one of them is Dobra who, while promising, hasn’t shown that he can score and assist regularly yet.

Then you need three central strikers because it’s such a specialist position and if one gets injured when you’ve only got two you’re f’d. What’s unusual is that those three are of a pretty similar quality - you’d expect all three to be the main number 9 in any other team in this league. Keeping all three happy is going to be tricky.

would dobra go to salford?

wasn't keen on crawley, think he needs at least a league one loan for his development

I doubt he is keen, but with all these new signings he might think it is the best option - think they also want Ndaba which may help as he at least has someone up there with him

I wonder where Burns and Dobra are going to end up in the pecking order ultimately. For Burns, is 5 goals and 3 assists last season really enough to get you in this Ipswich team? Is Dobra going to end up regretting deciding to stay and fight for his place?

Burns seems the most natural on the right side of the attacking three so I think he might be a starter. I wonder whether, as Joe mentions, Dobra could go out on loan, even if it's just until January.

Would be interesting to see if the current management team would be able to persuade him. He preferred to stay and fight for his place here last time he was offered a loan and that seemed to work better for him than the others who went out. However, I think Salford would be a different prospect and hopefully we would only agree if it is highly likely he would play.

Is that Morris?

I suspect this youngster is considerably ahead of him at the moment.

The best thing for Morris would be to get him on loan somewhere where he will be playing regularly.

Whilst I agree, It all depends what they offer. Is he better than Dobra? if yes, then so beit. we can still develop Dobra over the season. There's plenty of games aswell as cup fixtures too.

With PC style and desire, it requires maximum fitness levels. If you have to drop one out then you need someone in with level fitness levels and level in terms of quality. We're not replacing a Chaplin with Sears for example or Bonne with Hawkins.

Not signed to play?

Burns was a wingback
Fraser was CM and AM last season

Only thing we're missing is another LB and CB, Coulsen probably the left back so just another CB and we're done.
