Proper National Treasures 05:37 - Oct 7 with 7126 views | The_Romford_Blue | Was just thinking the other day when John Challis died (RIP) how David Jason is probably one of the biggest nationals treasure in Britain and it got me thinking who else would be on this list of say 10 people. I’ve got these so far on my imaginary list: - Sir David Jason - Sir David Attenborough - Sir Elton John - Dame Helen Mirren - Dame Judi Dench - Dame Maggie Smith And then on the ‘potentials’ list that didn’t quite make the cut but probably worth consideration: - Ant and Dec - Sir Tom Jones - Colin Firth - Sir Paul McCartney - Stephen Fry - Mary Berry - David Lloyd (AKA Bumble) Who else do we reckon is a genuine national treasure? Proper National Treasures on 10:39 - Oct 7 by BlueandTruesince82 | There is bit more to that case than the outcome. An admission to a friend of having made up the case and tbe contact to a solicitor offering to drop the case for 150k rather muddies the waters |
If we're talking about Sir Geoffrey here, he's not a wife-beater because the woman involved wasn't his wife. The whole conviction was a complete stitch-up. According to Boycott, Moore had grown angry when he refused to marry her, stating that "he was not the marrying kind" and had fallen when throwing his clothing from the window, hitting her head on the carpet.[181] When he again appealed against his conviction, Moore's version of events that Boycott had attacked her by punching her in the face, causing bruising, was upheld, in the light of photographs of her injuries shown to the court and the testimony of a doctor that the injuries could not have been caused in the way described by Boycott.[182][183] In 2015 an investigation by the Daily Telegraph alleged that Moore had admitted to a friend she had slipped on a marble floor and hit her head, causing the injury she later claimed was caused by Boycott. The newspaper also discovered that Boycott's solicitor had been contacted by a representative of Moore, suggesting that the allegation would be dropped if he paid her £150,000. Boycott refused to pay the sum demanded, stating he "considered it to be blackmail”. A separate incident documented in court papers also revealled Moore's barrister had demanded £1million from Boycott in return for her silence. Moore's lack of honesty has also been documented in other court cases relating to her business, when Mr Registrar James made a bankruptcy order against her he noted "a deliberate lack of truthfulness” in her evidence.[184][185]

Of course. Sandi is one of the Harrogate Toksvigs, proper old English family, been here for centuries. Nice people but terrible cheats at cribbage. [Post edited 7 Oct 2021 22:37]

Proper National Treasures on 12:02 - Oct 7 by BlueandTruesince82 | It's about evidence..... People can be vindictive, people lie. Now I personally am far more inclined to belive someone who didn't ask for a load of cash to drop the case, even more so when a friend of theirs was told they had made it up As someone who has has seen the damage that kind of violence can do I feel pretty sure that very few people would agree to offer to drop a case of that nature for any amout of money. |
The evidence was assessed by a court and a court of appeals - so you're quite right.. It is about evidence. Convicted by a court of law, disgusting woman beater. Was it not you who also casually enjoyed the reference of women as b**ches? - If so, I am hardly shocked at you taking the victim-blaming route. [Post edited 8 Oct 2021 5:53]

I think if you follow all the above I'm quite clear in my reasoning If i think someone is a bitch I call them one, If I think someone is a dick I call them one, simple and fair. Guess where I'm leaning on this occasion

I dint see how a man with a history of regularly making comments mocking the disabled can be considered a national treasure. Don’t know enough about Rosie Jones. Romesh Ranganathan Has been around for less than ten years. I dint think he can be considered for some time.

Proper National Treasures on 18:29 - Oct 7 by ArnoldMoorhen | A big yes to Benjamin Zephaniah. And in a similar vein to Lemn Sissay. And a leftfield nomination for Alex Horne. Others from the comedy world might include: Rob Newman Frank Skinner (Julie Walters and Lenny Henry have already been mentioned, and Rob Brydon was a good shout, too) Miles Jupp might be heading that way. And tangential to the comedy world: does anyone else have huge love for Liza Tarbuck? Toyah has come back into the picture recently, too... |
Rob Newman?! He was funny in a few sketches back in the day but has done nothing of major note for decades. Not sure how you could call him a national treasure.

He's treading a different path now. The whole "Comedy is the new Rock 'n' Roll" thing completely fcked his head up. Took some time out. Now touring small Arts Centres and proper Comedy Clubs with highly intelligent shows which bring together science and philosophy, which he then works into his own Radio 4 series'. https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b08nkn4k/episodes/guide Sure having your own Radio 4 series is one of the pathways to National Treasure status?

Bobby Charlton probably - and despite his Brexit insanity, 'Lord' Botham has made a national name for himself.

Yep, both of those two have been around for 5 minutes. You might as well have Josh Widdecombe as a national treasure if you're going to have those two.

He may well be doing some great stuff but if it's on a small scale and largely unknown by the populace, you can't really call him a national treasure. I love Daniel Kitson but I wouldn't have him as a national treasure for the same reasons.
