Underrated players 10:03 - Oct 27 with 3526 viewsRobTheMonk

I just stumbled across a Facebook post of underrated football players. It would be interesting to see the players people rate who never seemed to have got the plaudits they deserved.

I'll start with one who I never get seen mentioned and that man is Sami Khedira. World Cup winner, Champions League winner, Bundesliga winner, Seria A winner, La Liga Winner, numerous domestic trophies, and under 21 success. Over 100 games for Real Madrid, 99 games for Juventus and 77 games for a decent Germany side is not to be sniffed at.

Injuries perhaps robbed him of an even better career and that's saying something considering the amount he won.

I always thought Alan Brazil was underrated. A superb player in his time at ITFC.

Poll: If KM goes now, will you applaud him when he returns with his new club?

Quite obviously the whole of the 1961/62 team. No one in the football world rated them and hey ho they became champions of England.

I’ll go with five in no particular order:
Trevor Whymark - always sort of overlooked in favour of Paul Mariner and David Johnson the 1st.

Colin Viljoen. - a really top player who time was tarnished with how it ended at the club.

Kevin Wilson - good player who knew where the goal was.

Gavin Johnson - a really classy full back. Could pick a pass, had a bit of pace and who can forget that goal at Anfield. Such a shame injuries robbed him of what he might have been.

Jason De Vos - a really good centre half and captain. We missed him terribly when he finished. Nobody better has played at Centre Half since. Looked like somebody not to mess with too.

Agree with Finidi and Sereni, both pure class.

But the answer is Steve McAll

Hats off to Trevor Whymark, Clive Woods

Steve McCall is probably the right answer

I didn't realise he played 300 or games for Town

On the other hand, I’ve never seen an epidemiologist or a virologist hit such a sweet volley. So who’s right?

Very good point. I did see a proctologist curl one in from the edge of the box once though......

You nicked my post you git, almost word for fecking word, Whymark was the only one I wasn't going to say but otherwise exactly what I was going to say.

Saw Whymark playing in a testimonial a number of years after he retired and he was brilliant! Easily the best player on the pitch that day!

Here are several good examples of under rated Ipswich players;
Sereni
Donowa
Garvan
McGoldrick
Janoi although that tide is finally turning

Sereni?

Sereni is always my acid test of a fan.

who the hell didnt rate Mcgoldrick?!

Lots of people. They thought he was lazy, a shirker who always got mysterious injuries. They thought he couldn’t score tap ins.

Totally agree with De Vos, think even now after some of the CB pairings we've had since we still don't look back at him with enough credit.

Loved that bloke. What a player.

Really? I thought he was hugely over-rated, rather like Pablo Counago. Both more skilful than the average English player, but often flattered to deceive. Bontcho scored 6 times in 61 Town league games & didn't do much better when dropping down a league or so to play for Luton.

On that basis, I’ll deal you George Best. For me the greatest player of all.

Never gets the recognition/status he deserved because he played before football was invented in 1992 by Sky and could only play for Northern Ireland. If he’d played in his prime now, he’d be even more unplayable than he was then - an age when tackling and brutal assault was allowed.
