then they have to give safe passage for those wishing to enter the UK. They won't of course and the mud slinging will continue. RIP those poor souls.

It’s a tough choice. Don’t you think it would be better for people to use the deaths as political capital to play to their base in order to further their career goals?

Poll: Do you think Pert is key to all of this?

It's interesting that arrests have already been made. That tells me that, with a little effort and finances, these criminals can be stopped. Of course, safe routes would be another solution.
Watching Sky News, it seems the French police don't have the powers to stop the boats leaving the beaches.

There is a safe route. It is called applying for political asylum in the first safe country you reach.

If you are just migrating for economic reasons then the safe route is to apply for citizenship via that countries embassy. Once you get the proper paperwork then you can then enter your country of choice legally through a normal entry point (port/airport).

The propagation of this myth needs to stop. There is no onus on asylum seekers to apply for political asylum in the first safe country they reach under the Geneva Convention.

Norway (16%) has a high percentage of immigrants in its population than the UK (14.1%). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_sovereign_states_and_dependent_territories

This thread is actually about refugees though.
Norway (0.9%) also has a higher percentage of refugees in its population than the UK (0.2%). https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/SM.POP.REFG

That's explicitly not what they said, you might want to read again. They don't have to stop in the first safe country.

So they are specifically setting out to reach the UK?….. travelling such a distance then why should we allow “safe passage” when they have travelled through several safe countries to get to the risky channel crossing

For some, yes.

They may have family here already or a community they know about (depends on country of origin).

Or maybe they speak the language, which would make integrating easier.

For others, no. They will just pay a smuggler to get them somewhere.

And why should we? Because we are legally obliged to by international law. Also it's not particularly fair on all the other countries that are closer to war zones to pick up all the refugees just because they happen to be closer.

Then they should travel via “legal routes”

If they choose to take the risks they do then why should we help them?

"If they choose to take the risks they do then why should we help them?"

Define help. If by help you mean we should check to see whether they meet refugee status we should do so because we are required to by the Geneva Convention.

Also, we closed down a lot of the legal routes during Covid, so it is increasingly difficult for anyone to legally claim asylum here. Actual asylum claims have actually gone down recently via the "legal" routes.

Also, just to point out, there is no "illegal" route. What these people are doing is not illegal if they are claiming asylum.

No, what should happen is that you can apply for asylum, once you reach a safe country.

Let’s have some more interesting hypotheticals. It is just lazy having such simple ones.

The U.K. only allows you to claim asylum once you reach the U.K.

As an example the U.K. have resettled some people from Afghanistan, those directly working for the U.K. government.

A cousin, that didn’t work for the UK Government, but still fleeing from the Taliban, can’t claim asylum in the UK. Until that person gets to the UK.

Why should that person, and all other people fleeing an extremist brutal regime, that the West spent billions trying to defeat, but failed, just stay in Greece?

Why should a random country by accident of geography have to take the burden of all refugees from Afghanistan?

Why would you not let a refugee, apply to stay with some of their family?
