F1 showdown thread 11:38 - Dec 12 with 16775 views | bluelagos | In case anyone is unaware, is live on C4 today, coverage starts at 12, race at 1pm. Winner takes all. We are watching history, have no doubt this season will be made into a film in time, much as the great "Rush" and "Senna" were. I'll be shouting for Max. Much as I love Hamilton and his amazing career, the talent of Verstappen is undeniable. Time for the new pretender or for the old guard to get the all time record for F1 championships?

Missed the middle & last few laps except final one - what happened? Gather safety car for an accident, but the rest?

They basically gerrymandered the rules on the second to last lap under a safety car and let Verstappen win

F1 showdown thread on 14:39 - Dec 12 by pointofblue | Ah and, if they had, they would have ran out of time to finish the race without a safety car? |
Yeah, they all should have been allowed to go past, then there likely wouldn't have been time to race - so they contrived a one lap race-off between Verstappen and Hamilton by only clearing the cars between Hamilton and Verstappen.

F1 showdown thread on 14:36 - Dec 12 by pointofblue | Don’t they usually let the lapped cars overtake? |
Yes and then wait until they all get back round. They announced they wouldn't be allowed, then let 5 cars overtake so they were next to each other then started the race with them there and Max behind. It's totally against the rules and dodgy as fook. No way Mercedes will stand for it. SB [Post edited 12 Dec 2021 14:43]

Latifi had an accident which brought out the safety car; Verstappen pitted for new tyres whilst Hamilton stayed out; there were backmarkers between Verstappen and Hamilton when the former returned to the track - at first the FIA said the back markers would not overtake but then allowed those between Hamilton and Verstappen to do so, which means the title challengers were together on the track. The safety car then left and the race re-started; Verstappen overtook on fresher tyres and won the race.

All change with regard to the cars next year, lets hope we get the awesome battle we had this year.

Bent, or succumbed to pressure from Red Bull. Either way, an utter embarrassment.

And in doing so essentially decided that Verstappen was going to win. It stinks.

I think Verstappen and Red Bull will see it as a form of justice. This could rumble on and on; they only have three months until the start of the 2022 season.

Justice for what? Max has been the one breaking rules all season as the other drivers have said in their meetings. It's an awful ending to the season. SB [Post edited 12 Dec 2021 14:50]

It was an absolute disgrace and a travesty that this situation was manufactured. Shame on the FIA. Lewis didn’t put a foot wrong and Verstappen wasn’t even gaining on fresher tyres prior to the crash which gave the FIA the opportunity to manufacture a red bull win.

This wasnt even a matter of judgment, it was patently incorrect and gerrymandered. Exepcially with how it was suddenly spring from nowhere.

Think when you have seven titles behind you you can afford to be calmer when it must feel like everything was against him at the end. Would have been interesting to have seen Verstappen's reaction if the race had finished behind the safety car.

F1 showdown thread on 14:39 - Dec 12 by ZXBlue | Exactly. Which would have finished the race and no chance to overtake. They gerrymandered it for Verstappen. Looks bent. |
The rules seem completely broken as far as tyre changes under safety cars go. Hamilton was 11 seconds ahead and cruising - obviously losing the gap is unavoidable and the nature of the sport however he was also actively disadvantaged by being ahead with the tyre change, as Mercedes were damned if they did and damned if they didn’t bring him in I’m not sure what the answer is tbh, perhaps banning pit stops behind the safety car but then there is probably a safety risk with punctures etc. Maybe allowing all cars to stop and being guaranteed to resume in the same order after the safety car or something, although feels a bit clunky The free change under a red flag is also a complete nonsense

And only the lapped cars between P1. and p2 were allowed to unload themselves. Totally inept. If it had of finished under the safety car nothing would have been said of it as Hamilton was so dominant today.
