Harris done deal 22:56 - Dec 13 with 17022 viewsportmanking

Rumours gathering pace on WhatsApp among a few people I know connected to the club that it's sorted. Bircham could indeed be part of Harris' coaching setup, which could explain his odds with the bookies.

If this does have legs, I have to say I'm truly, truly gutted we've chucked Cookie for this lot.

If we're seriously opting for Harris, it probably shows that we're not as attractive a job as we all think.

Utterly depressing appointment for a club with supposid big ambition.

Or Harris is better than we think he is. The jury has delivered a verdict WAY too soon on a manager that hasn't even been confirmed yet.

I still haven't really seen anyone provide reasons why Harris is a poor appointment other than the fact he favours direct football. Yet the same people seem to think Colin is going to be better on that front.

Keep in mind people were hungry for an up'and'comer when Mick left - we got Paul Hurst. The difference between Hurst and Harris' CV? Hurst got promoted into the Championship, Hurst didn't. Yet people were pretty excited for us to announce Hurst.

Did we think Ryan Lowe would be an easy booking only for PNE to swoop in and scupper us?

Neil Harris if it's true then so be it but those in work managers that were lighting up Ashtons phone must all be crap.

We would have been foolish not to court Lowe if not for PNE going for him.

Or is it that he’s one of the better ones of a bad bunch available to us?

I really can’t imagine that when the new owners rolled in they all got on Zoom and said ‘well this Cook bloke is in place so we will see how we go, but the real bloke we want is Neil Harris’. I’ll be very interested to here the rationale behind this appointment because at the moment it looks like a right old panic up.

You are right about Hurst. It looked a good appointment at the time. Cook even more so, so you can’t always tell.

The TWTD and Twitter jury are usually wrong about managers (myself included) - So this is all looking optimistic to me.

His win record at Millwall was decent, 41.6% over 4.5 years. His record at Cardiff over 14 months was a little worse at 38.7%.

Paul Cook's record at Ipswich? 29.5%.

But, Cook hit 44.8%, 48.6% and 41.3% with Chesterfield, Portsmouth and Wigan respectively, so you can see why he was an attractive option.

Frankly, who knows how good Harris will be? He could be the messiah or just another very naughty boy.

That’s the sad thing isn’t it - Cooks record suggests that he really was just about the best man for us. Somewhere, somehow it just didn’t work. I look forward to it coming out as to why.

If Harris is next for us I’m a little underwhelmed as I know nothin about him. I’d expected the Yanks to aim high, like they did with the players. Seems to me like something has changed, or Harris did a terrific interview!

Harris does speak incredibly well, so there is every chance he did exactly that - wow at the interview. That is to say, if it is Harris.

I have a feeling we're going to find out very soon, and if it isn't Harris, it will likely be someone who has not come close to the top of the bookies odds. That said, the gut feeling is that it is NH.

Or no one wants the job mid season.

In all honesty, as Joe said further up, he could get us organised and that may see us shoot up the table.

I'm Not thrilled by the appointment if it happens, but will give it a chance of course. Maybe he is just what's needed right now and he's in effect coming in to get us out of this league and if we do go up, then we'd look to change strategy? I guess we shall see!

Any manager that applies probably knows they have 19 games to get it right, so I would imagine that has a part to play in some people applying.

I think people are getting worked up over nothing.

I cant see us going for Hoofball Harris. I believe we've got a bit more about us to identify someone a bit more interesting, with a bit of potential

NH just doesn't feel like a Gamechanger type appointment , unless he is just here for this season , until the real choice becomes available ?

If that is the case , chances are any transfer business will very much be Ashton dealings ....and one of these should be talking to Brighton to get a deal for Walton .

Joe is right in that this squad of players undoubtedly has the quality to rip up this league. I just don’t understand why Cook couldn’t get them to perform with consistency.

if Harris is next then the sooner we get some proper info on him the better. Simply say8ngbhes a long ball merchant isn’t enough - he must be more than that. Is there evidence that he players to the players strengths, is adaptable in formation, is a good motivation and willing/able to adapt to a match as it unfolds? All those things are much more important and if he can do them then he’ll be a great appointment.

Harris likes direct, but attacking football. To me this is not hoofball- which I see as ultra-defensive.

The TWTD and Twitter jury are usually wrong about managers (myself included) - So this is all looking optimistic to me.

If I look back to previous ones and how I felt when managers were appointed:

Ferguson - uneasy, but happy with continuity
Duncan - exciting young manager. An upgrade from dour BF
Lyall - not Robson’s calibre, but thought him a really good fit
Burley - one of ours, so club knowledge would outweigh average manager record (Ayr and Col U)
Royle - again, good fit, the man for the job
Magilton - on the cheap, bound to fail due to Jim’s volatility
Keane - unsettled by employing a nut job. He seemed all wrong for us despite brilliant press conferences
Jewell - I just felt sad because it had failure written all over it. Just like him
McCarthy - poor fit, poor football, might just hoof us into the PL before being sacked
Hurst - excited by this. A good young manager. Ahem.
Lambert - couldn’t see how he could do anything. Best years long behind him. Seemed all wind.
Cook - best appointment in years. Guaranteed to succeed. Oh well

Ok, these were my feelings at the time and my judgement is bl00dy awful. Not a clue. What it does tell me is that pre judging is as wrong as a lot of those appointments. Harris, if it’s him, has to be given a clean slate and support. I hope he gets just that.

Well, under Evans - Ipswich was a cushy job as you traditionally got a long time to fail - however it is clear that Ashton and Co. won't be as tolerant and patient, maybe even to a fault.

Maybe he would look at the talent in this squad and think he could play more on the floor than his previous clubs

I actually think you are right - when you look at the players available to him at Millwall he played to their strengths, he may just do that here and produce some direct but decent football!
