Apparently M&S have dropped the name 'Midget Gems' for fear of offending people with dwarfism.

Don't have much problem with this.
The primary dictionary definition of midget generally relates to "a person or animal of small stature".
It's fair enough to change it IMO, though it's easy to see why it might trigger some people.
Each to their own I suppose.

Distortion becomes somehow pure in its wildness.

The centuries-old conflation of correctness with 'right' is deeply offensive to us left-handed people.

Even the Romans were at it.

You should have had that corrected in childhood. Just like the good ole days. A good thrashing every time you tried to use the left hand and you’d be all the happier for it. Once the bruising had gone.

Did you know you can’t fire a Bren Gun left handed? You get hit in the face with empty shell cases if you do.

When I was coming up to five (so late 1959, early 1960) my Mum took me to see the Primary School I'd be going to.

She actually asked if, as I were left-handed, she should be tying that hand behind my back.

I think the reply was a very patronising 'We don't do that any more Mrs Factual (senior)'

I was just answering your question. I presume in MGs case it was meant to be an affectionate name for a particularly small and nimble little car.

FWIW I couldn't give 2 hoots. Its a weird name for confectionary anyway for a start. I find it weird that this is deemed newsworthy, or that I'm spending my time on a Thursday afternoon talking about it.

But it is more evidence that the world is now politically correct, or is it woke - can be hard to keep up with these paranoids

Likewise with writing left handed, I can only imagine the outrage that was expressed by the 'wokey cokeys' when that happened. Whatever word was in vogue at that time I am sure it was followed by 'gone mad'.

however it is curious to note how the same ones find these bits of evidence to back their case. More often the whole story has not been given, as

A few years a primary school had banned whore choldren from giving each other Xmas cards - or so the 'wokey cokeys' were claiming. A closer look had that the headmistress had indeed introduced this ban as her teaching staff felt it was 'getting out of hand' and detrimental to the kids.

Whereby certain children were being ganged up on so as to not be given a card and wealthier kids were able to afford lavish cards etc, while some of the 'less wealthy struggled to buy 30 cards. Parents were being advised to have their children but one card for the whole class.

Sounds perfectly reasonable to me - but that is not what the 'wokey cokeys ' want to hear. For them, the whole world is a conspiracy against them, and anything that supposedly backs this up is dragged out.

Sad people.

They did in the 1930s when my dad was at school. He was made to write right handed and does to this day. Oddly, he played all sport (a lot of it to a good level) left handed with the exception of snooker.

I suspect in the time of the Romans before and beyond was that to form a shield wall it’s not going to work with left handed people are in it as your shield is meant to protect the dude next to you.

I see a few people think that's very short sighted of M&S

Disgusting that you use that phrase. People with astigmatism suffer enough without having to read stuff like that on this messageboard (if they peer closely enough).
