Penney taking a few digs at the methods of Paul Cook 09:26 - Jan 14 with 5073 viewsElderGrizzly

In the latest EADT interview pushed by Mark Heath this morning

"I think a lot (is down to him)," he said. "A lot has changed - tactics, formations, roles - so I think a lot of it has come through the new manager”

“Training's great. It's sharp, intense and there's a real detail to everything we do. The standards are really high and the boys are thriving off it”

“It's so different to what we've been used to, but like I say, it's been great”

The last line is the killer.

Indeed, the training under Cook was just very repetitive and boring, from what I heard (certainly towards the end of his time when the results just weren't consistent enough).

Think Penney may be saying those things as well because Cook did stick him on the transfer list also.

This will get repetitive and boring too, it’s just the nature of the beast given its a daily occurrence. It’s fresh and exciting at the moment as it’s new but it’ll wear off until it’s reinvigorated, rethought or someone else comes in with a different approach. We were hearing similar noises from Wolfenden about Cook’s training at the start of the season.

Isn’t that the same interview featured on here yesterday? Just surprised you missed it…

Given Morsy was resembling a crab under Cook, but is now in the box providing assists and shooting there is definitely a lot of truth in there

Morsy has had plenty of shots this season to be fair. Sadly not many have been on target.

There will be some element of that but it does sound like KMc is generally more dynamic and will change some of the focus of the week depending on the opponent also.

Bishop said that as a midfielder he wasn’t allowed to get into the box under Cook. People laughed and called it sour grapes at the time…

Lee Evans scored a hat trick and was called out for getting too far forward as wasn't his job....!

No, and with a lot of first team players there needs to be really well thought out and engaging sessions - had heard from one that feels a lot more modern now and Cook's sessions at times felt like going through motions and plodding along.

Have also heard all sessions now filmed on drone and the performance staff are clipping up videos to go through with the individual players for where they need to improve, and been empowered to do so by McKenna, i.e. not all has to be run through him, if they see bits which aren't right they can correct with the players

The bit about empowerment is good to hear.

re: your earlier point about Burley, I think it was telling that he was prepared to bring in people like Stuart Houston and John Gorman to add some different inputs. It always seemed like that made a positive difference to the team, we were much better defensively after Houston's season.

That's a big difference, McKenna embracing the performance team unlike Cook who was challenged by them.

It's just clichéd footballer speak.

I'm one of the people who was blamed for getting Paul Cook sacked. PM for the full post.

And to think there were several who wanted another old fossil in place of PC. McKenna was out of the blue. But didn't come with baggage. He is taking as big a risk as the club as his future in management depends on his success or failure with ITFC and I would imagine that the CEO's job wasn't 100% safe given that PC was ousted quicker than many would have thought.

I was just about to put this, Both Evans and Cook "joked" when he scored the hattrick about how the centre mids shouldn't be getting in the box and scoring like that and that Cook was going to have to have words about it.

Yeah, this has been noticeable in all the interviews since Cook left. I know there's always an element of saying the right thing at interviews, but I get the feeling that there genuinely has been a big step up in professionalism and approach. Often it's more about what they don't say about the time under Cook that's the most damning. Like that middle line "It's sharp, intense and there's a real detail to everything we do. The standards are really high", the obvious implication being.... This is pretty much the first time I've seen someone directly refer to how it used to be, but they've all gone out of their way to say how good it is now. Again, the obvious implication I that it used to be crap.

I'm not surprised either. Cook was old school and had some strange characters as coaches. He reminded me of the laddish approach of PJ, whereas we've got a professional outfit now.

I think whatever club you play for, going to work just needs to be fun. Some will respond to certain types of people in the squad and coaching staff, some won’t. There will definitely be those who like the training and others not so keen - law of averages with that many people.

Either way, if the intensity is there, it’s maintained and varied, it’ll be for the better.
