Last Night - North Stand lower 11:12 - Feb 23 with 8947 viewsWallingford_Boy

I've been to a few away games this season, but last night was my first home game (I coach on Saturdays, so cant make it all the way to Ippo in time, don't judge!)

I was genuinely shocked by the silence in the North Stand lower! Yes I know away games are always much noisier and yes it was a nervy game, but a big crowd in, team are on a roll.... but no noise.

Is that normal?

RIP Sir Bobby

Need you guys in the middle because there are willing singers in section 4, but they basically sing their own stuff because the noise doesn't carry at all from the left of the goal to the right.

I'm in section 5 and caught smack in the middle of 4 & 6, because of the overlap of 2 different songs at the same time 5 doesn't know what to do with itself!

Quite the opposite the second I heard a faint song, I joined in.

* Give me an "I"....
* Hark now hear
* Come on you blues

Etc..

The reason I said it was because if you are singing, you generally think it’s a great atmosphere. Sound doesn’t travel very far at PR due to rubbish acoustics, so the lads in Section 6 probably thought the atmosphere was great, oblivious to the silence elsewhere.

I join in with anything that's being sung in the Blue Action block, but notice the people around me not doing it...

Tuesday night games are rubbish.

Everyone is tanked up on a Saturday, don’t get the time to do it on a Tuesday.

I don't think exclusion is what I'm looking for, just that people should feel an obligation.

We expect these 11 lads to die for the club when we're just another employer to them. We expect them to me more committed than us, to whom the club is supposed to be everything? It's not right for me.

People should feel obligated to sing?

I think there is a difference between playing and being paid for a club compared to being a fan. People "support" in different ways. Just paying the money to get in is supporting the club.

No-one should feel obligated to do anything.

Sadly 80% of the seats in the middle section behind the goal have been occupied by people who almost never sing at all.
It has been like that for the last 20 years at least.
I used to be there but finally gave up about 10 years ago and moved to section 6.

That's because 30 odd years ago, they were the late teens / twenties groups who would sing.
But they've got older over time and aren't so bothered about singing, but don't want to give up their good view.

Immediately around us, the lads in front of us are usually pretty vocal, those either side and to the rear on the right are pretty good, but the ones immediately behind us are more interested in discussing their week at work, how the family is, if there were any delays on the trains and generally anything other than what's going on on the pitch.

I say ( and so has Mills alluded to btw), that it’s up to the players to generate the excitement on the pitch to get the crowd going. Whilst we play nice pitta patta footie , making nice angles etc etc, how often do we actually go for the jugular in our opponents, and have wave upon wave of relentless attacking football? Not often.
Playing chess on the football pitch with the ball, is intriguing to watch and often enjoyable. But is it rip your arse out of your seat, insatiable urge to twang yer vocals for all your worth? No. I guarantee you all if the team could “ up it” and go for ii more the fans would follow suit and raise the roof.

I think the point is that people should feel obliged to sing in the lower north because there’s plenty of availability everywhere else in the ground for people to sit in silence or have a chat etc whilst getting a decent view of the game.

We all keep raising the same points about why it’s like it is but nothing much is going to change unless the club are willing to assist with organising it better. There’s enough room for what all the different types of fans want but the club aren’t really interested in doing anything about it. When approached they just say they’re working on it and fob you off. It’s ironic that Stuart Hayton is listed as one of the “Supporter liaison officers” on the club site given that he can’t even be bothered to acknowledge suggestions via email.

Ah I see. OK I get that.

Not sure why anyone who doesn't want to sing sits there to be honest.

I have to agree recently, there doesn't seem too much noise from the North stand and as you say, without the clubs help, i'm not sure what can be done!

Their good view? People don’t sit in SBRL for the view surely?

From within the stand, I thought it was relatively noisy first half but got quieter as it dragged on at 0-0, then annoyed at Cheltenham's gamesmanship late on.

In truth though, there's only pockets of supporters who actually sing, there's a lot in the Lower North who don't much.

Take a good look at the demographic - even in the North. We're all getting older. But it was ever thus. I used to be upset about the fickle Town fan base when I was a teenager. Now I'm 63. I sit with my tartan blanket in the Lower West Stand. Most of the current songs I have NO CLUE what the words are. Even Blue/White Army sounds weird from the Lower North.
But it's not much different anywhere else. Crowds react to things on pitches. We played excellent for 25 minutes; did not score; and then things got more and more anxious.
We do need noise otherwise the muppets in the crowd start on at the players. A guy in the I2 lower having a pop at Thompson; then Piggott. The players hear that. And then they tighten up; stop doing the pass and move stuff. "Get it forward - lump it" they shout; big guys, headers - never going to win that battle. Cheltenham just gobbled up the last quarter.

I think its quite normal. No discredit to the work and effort BA have put in to change it. I think they are great.

But we aren't a loud fanbase, I blame the two tier north stand, should never have changed that. But also Ipswich fans aren't loud and rowdy or renowned for having loud fans. It just isn't going to happen.

I was in West Stand in the middle tier and actually thought the atmosphere was pretty decent.

Think you're being a tad harsh there. First half or so was really good, but the atmos mirrored the play on the pitch: raucous and free flowing in the first half, tense and bitty in the second...

We really pushed the club on this at the beginning of the season and it was fraught to say the least. We've got a meeting with Mark Ashton next month about it so won't go on about our travails here...

At the end of the day, It's a 30,000 seat stadium so there's no reason why we can't have, say, a 200 seat block where the EXPECTATION is that you sing and make noise. This would still allow 28,800 fans to watch the game in peace and quiet. Thanks to all-seater stadia, this needs some organisation and creative thinking, but they managed it at clubs like Crystal Palace, Middlesborough, Huddesfield and even Bradford and Hartlepool, all of whom have vibrant, club supported 'ultra' blocks. Mark Ashton talked about how important a vibrant atmosphere is in selling the club to players, so i'm confident we can come up with a decent long term solution that will benefit everyone...

The mere fact that you claim that those that who sit "watch the game in peace and quiet" shows how clueless you are.

Having been to a large number of away grounds in my time , it made me realise that Town fans are actually quite noisy at home . These away grounds included current PL and championship clubs , and I can tell you now Town fans at home are more than a match ….whilst our away fans are phenomenal.

This myth that Ipswich fans are quiet is just that - a myth. No crowd constantly sings… and Town fans are no different in that , and when we do sing we make a lot of noise often from all four stands. This I noted was not the case at other clubs, who usually only have a small section of fans singing .
