Totally out of control now isn't it. I know so many people who have got it including myself. Was reading that there were 5m cases last week. We can't have another lock down so what happens now.

I can understand people not wanting to be locked down again, but why on earth would you be "shouting from the roof tops" to end mask wearing?!

Just look at the helmet who’s shouting it, a shameful excuse for a PM

Completely agree. The restrictions have been lifted and people have simply gone back to behaving how they did before Covid hit. Like the last 2 years were a blip, it's gone now though as people or the media aren't talking about it as much.

I still largely wear a mask when shopping but I have got out of the habit when nipping to the corner shop for a pint of milk.

I gave a lift to a Chinese girl last week who just landed from Shanghai and she wore here FFP2 mask for the whole of the 5 hour journey.

I think many people simply would rather take the risk than wear a mask but I appreciate that mask wearing is really for others, it's a difficult one really.

Seeing that 1 in 13 people had it last week (probably higher) you would hope that it would burn out.

Loads have it, including me, my throat feels like I have been eating broken glass, tested positive on Tuesday evening. Gutted at missing the game today, loads of people I know have it or have recently had it. I have been working from home all week but must be a nightmare for businesses whose staff cannot work remotely.

According to Gov stats the numbers being admitted to hospital is now as high as it was at the peak in January. Numbers in intensive care are much lower, seems there is an increase in the numbers admitted to hospital for non Covid related reasons but test positive.

According to SIL, those admitted to his ITU are exclusively unvaccinated and on average stand a 50% chance of survival.

I thought it was unnecessary once the government relaxed everything and the virus would get so weak it wouldn't affect our daily lives. What do I know.

Big difference between thinking it unnecessary and shouting it from the roof tops that we should end it. After the nasty bout I've had recently I'll be wearing one for a while yet, feck getting that again. Also upgraded to a medical grade one on Lucan's advice. Just baffles me why mask wearing bothers people so much. It's not that much of a hardship, and when you compare it to getting a bad dose of the disease (which you'll never appreciate until you've had it) it's a no brainer in public spaces for me.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

Cases seem to be dropping, so hopefully that’s going to be the peak for deaths of this wave. Hopefully.

That’s another 1,116 people who couldn’t learn to live with it though. Maybe they didn’t believe hard enough or some such daft reason that the a-hole libertarians keep coming out with.

Meanwhile I'm reading reports of GP surgeries dealing with emergencies only cos so many docs off sick - which isn't surprising, as one receptionist said their surgery workers have been told they won't get paid for any days off sick with Covid if that exceeds their statutory annual sick leave. So for financial reasons they're forced to go in & infect vulnerable patients as well as doctors.

People physically stuck on trains for hours as not enough signal operators.

Not to mention a potential future variant which is far more lethal, with so much mixing going on in the population - inc unvaccinated kids, their parents mixing with older generations, unregulated international travel.

Some other countries are taking it a *lot* more seriously.

It’s all we have though and the stats are comparable over time as the methodology has been constant for a while now. And more importantly, they are (were) real lives.

I'm sure a few people are dying because of covid but how many? I would wager not that many at all, and those that are are probably unvaccinated.

Seeing that one in 13 people had Covid last week it's not beyond the wit of man to deduce that approximately one in 13 people in the UK who died last week also had Covid - probably more if they died in a petri dish of a hospital.

The only metric that is of any real use now is if and when (knock on wood it doesn't happen, and I doubt it will now) intensive care units are overwhelmed, which might indicate some kind of new variant affecting people in a much more dangerous manner.

I was one of those shouting from the roof tops to end mask wearing. I think I was shouting way too early to be honest. I've personally found having covid the second time just as bad as the first.

What didn’t you like about having to wear a mask? Ok, it’s uncomfortable and not nice but I never understood why mask wearing managed to upset so many people.

Fully understand if someone had to wear on throughout their working day but for the majority it was around the supermarket or such like.

What happens now? We live with it. Much fewer people seriously sick with it, more people vaccinated against it so any infections should be less severe, the virus has weakened considerably so with continuing boosters/yearly jabs like the flu jab we should be able to cope

'Living with it' means sensible precautions. Likeproper testing, masking in public and 5-10 days isolation.

As I've said ad infinitum, we learn to live with the inevitability of road accidents by seeking to mitigate against their worst effects with mandatory seat belts, speed limits, basic driving standards, airbags, etc, etc.

To repeat, I wonder if those who have been complaining about following some simple rules such as basic hygiene ever normally wash.

Or those whining about masks normally lean forwards with their mouths gaping every time they cough or sneeze.

Probably chew their food with their mouths open too.

Animals I tell ya and there's no place in a civilised society for them.

Establishments should stick a trough outside in the street for them so the rest of us can get on with life.

Yes, you were too early. It’s taking the reinfections to make people realise it isn’t ‘just like a cold’. Obviously some people get it worse than others, as has always been the case, but plenty are getting hit badly this time round. Hospitalisations are high and plenty of people’s lives are being made miserable by long covid as well.

As for ‘learning to live with Covid’, we’re not really doing that either. We’re ignoring it, which isn’t the same thing at all. Learning to live with it should mean adapting so the we can get of with as normal life as possible while minimising opportunities for infection. So re-evaluate how we use indoor spaces, better ventilation, and yes in some cases wearing masks if needed.

Madge and I both have it. I feel like I just have a heavy cold. Madge is 7 + months pregnant with twins and is currently in hospital with high blood pressure and her bloodwork is not right.

She doesn't seem to have any obvious symptoms, but the fact that I can't be with her is quite upsetting for both of us. She's currently isolated in a room.
